Despite being over six years old, the Chevrolet Trax continues to enjoy strong demand all over the world. Sales are healthy in the United States and internationally, a circumstance that has enabled the small crossover to be South Korea’s most popular automotive export in 2018. In fact, 2018 marks the third consecutive year that the Trax has earned this title.
GM Korea recently announced that in 2018, it exported a total of 239,800 units of the Chevrolet Trax to over 60 countries worldwide. In addition to making the Trax South Korea’s most exported vehicle, that figure also represents 65 percent of the 369,554 vehicles that the GM subsidiary exported in 2018.
The Chevrolet Trax has been South Korea’s most exported vehicle since 2016. In addition, GM Korea has exported over 200,000 units per year of the model since 2014, demonstrating a constant interest in the vehicle in international markets. We should also note that since the beginning of the Trax’s launch at the end of 2012, more than 1,400,000 units of have been manufactured at the GM Bupyeong plant.
The primary market for the Korean-made Chevrolet Trax is the United States, which received 89,916 units of the subcompact crossover SUV in 2018. Additionally, Bupyeong exports the vehicle to Canada, several countries in Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and to Australia and New Zealand (as the Holden Trax).

The commercial success of the Chevrolet Trax is quite impressive, especially given the fact that the first generation model has almost reached the end of its life cycle. In the coming months, Chevrolet will debut an all-new, second generation 2020 Trax. The model, which is currently undergoing final rounds of validation testing, will take styling cues from the all-new, 2019 Chevrolet Blazer and could reach even greater levels commercial success than the first-generation model.
About The Chevrolet Trax
The first-generation Chevrolet Trax made its global debut on September 27th, 2012 at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. At the end of 2012, Mexico and Canada began selling the small new crossover. The Trax then went on sale in Europe in early 2013, quickly becoming Chevy’s second best-selling vehicle in Europe after of the Spark.
Soon after that, the Trax went on sale in China, Russia and South America. In Russia and South America, the vehicle was introduced under the Tracker name because the word “Trax” carries negative connotations in Russian and Portuguese.
The Trax was first shown in the United States during the 2014 New York International Auto Show before going on sale in early 2015. The U.S. market was the last to receive the subcompact Chevy crossover as executives feared that the vehicle could cannibalize sales of the bread-and-butter Equinox.
Besides the Bupyeong plant in South Korea, the Chevrolet Trax is also produced at the following GM plants:
- SAIC-GM Dong Yue Plant in China supplying China
- GM San Luis Potosí Plant in Mexico

How many did South Korea buy?
9,414 units of the Chevy Trax were sold in South Korea in 2018, making it GM Korea’s third-best-seliing model.
I think GM only makes 3 or 4 models in Korea now. Many were dropped.

I think the above comment wasn’t against Korea or Koreans; it was against an American company kept alive by American taxpayers exporting American jobs.
I’m glad GM employs people in Korea; they need to be doing the same, to no lesser degree, at home.
General Motors should retrofit their Lordstown facility to build the Trax and Encore.. GM CEO Mary Barra should consider doing it before Donald Trump puts a 25-percent tariff on every Chevy Trax coming into the country.
Its also made in Mexico and sold as a Buick.
