2019 Blazer: No Way To Turn Off Engine Stop-Start

We suspected that Chevy’s all-new 2019 Blazer will not feature a way to disable the auto engine stop-start system, but we now have official confirmation that this will be the case.

“We do not offer the option to disable Start/Stop on the 2019 Blazer,” confirmed Maureen Bender of Chevrolet Communications confirmed to GM Authority.

That means that owners can’t disable engine auto stop-start on either of the engine options in the 2019 Blazer, including the base 2.5L LCV four-cylinder and the 3.6L LGX V6. Both naturally-aspirated engines are mated to the new GM 9-speed automatic transmission.

The 2019 Blazer joins several other GM models that do not offer a way to disable engine auto stop-start, including the Chevrolet Cruze, Cadillac XT5, and GMC Acadia (with the 2.5L engine). Interestingly, Chevrolet added the ability to disable the feature for the 2019 Cruze, though the entire Cruze range will be discontinued in North America.

Engine auto stop-start was developed as a fuel-saving measure by automatically shutting off the engine when the vehicle has come to a complete stop. As soon as the driver begins to lift his/her foot off the brake pedal, the engine springs back to life.

Since its introduction years ago, the feature has come under heavy criticism by some owners for being clunky, not user-friendly, or otherwise unnverving. On models that don’t a button to disable auto stop-start, like the 2019 Blazer, a few hacks exist to temporarily prevent the system from shutting down the engine. However, none of the solutions are persistent.

It will be interesting to see whether the absence of a defeat button for the engine auto stop-start system will have a negative impact on Blazer sales and, if so, to what extent.

About Chevrolet Blazer

The Chevrolet Blazer is a mid-size crossover utility vehicle (CUV). It is currently Chevrolet's second-biggest CUV, slotting between the compact Chevrolet Equinox and full-size Chevrolet Traverse. The current model was introduced for the 2019 model year and represents the fifth generation of the Blazer nameplate, which dates back to 1969. The model rides on the regular-wheelbase variant of the GM C1 platform shared most directly with the second-gen GMC Acadia and first-gen Cadillac XT5. The long-wheelbase variant of the same platform is shared with the Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave, and Cadillac XT6.

The 2019 Blazer flaunts attention-grabbing exterior design, seamlessly integrated customer-focused technologies and superb functionality. Many of the exterior and interior design elements are borrowed from the sixth-generation Camaro.

The 2019 Blazer range consists of four trim levels, including the base L, three mid-tier Blazer trim levels (consisting of three LT trims), the sporty Blazer RS and the range-topping Blazer Premier trim. New technology offered on the 2019 Blazer includes capless fuel fill, HID headlights, LED daytime running lights, and a Cargo Management System.

  1. good looking vehicle. muuuucho maaaaacho!!!! if trump needs fencing material for his “wall”, he needs to call gm’s grill supplier.

  2. Is this some kind of joke? 50K for the Premier for this garbage? Even with Premier, there’s still of sea of plastics. 50K is luxury money. This is not luxury. That beautiful 3-row SUV from Kia tops out also at 50K and not only is it bigger but it’s way way better looking and the interior blows this one out of the water. The interior is also better than that of the XT6! Seriously, what is GM doing over there? No doubt nobody is paying close to sticker for this SUV. 50K also rewards you with a top trim Jeep Grand Cherokee, a superior vehicle in and out in every way. I’m not bashing GM for bashing’s sake. These are constructive criticisms. The exterior of the Blazer is polarizing but that interior is sub-par and the top trim interior is not worth 50K. A loaded Acura RDX is the same amount of money and is a better vehicle in and out. Now…you charge 33K, maybe 35K for a fully loaded Blazer and that interior is OK. But it’s not worth 50K, I’m sorry.

    1. Completely agree, GM mgt has lost touch with reality. There are plenty of much better alternatives with greater value AT a better value.

  3. You may want to correct the story as the Acadia is still a Six speed and does not have auto stop yet. I expect the refresh to get it.

The lack of being able to shut this off would give me pause on replacing my present Acadia with a GM vehicle with this system. I know it works well but I just do not like not having full control over this.

My question is I have been seeing 305 hp listed on the Chevy. Where is the missing 5 hp my Acadia has?

    Reply
    1. The Acadia has auto stop-start on the 2.5L.

Obviously, the Acadia with the 3.6 LGX has the extra 5 horses due to nuances with the 6-speed vs. the new 9-speed in the Blazer.

      Reply
      1. Yet the 2019 Traverse uses a 3.6/9 speed at 310 hp and auto stop? I believe the Enclave also makes use of the 310 hp too.

Just courious what GM has to say on this. It would be a good question for a media person to ask.

Yes I forgot about the Acadia 4. It is a non factor as that engine needs a turbo.

        Reply
        1. The truth is that the Acadia/XT5/Blazer get the LGX engine, while the Traverse, Enclave get the LFY which is an older gen engine, but has improved airflow/start stop added.
I would prefer the LGX with the disable button.

  4. I religiously turn off the start / stop feature on the vehicle I drive for work, and I know others who do the same. It defeats the purpose of having it which might be why they are getting rid of the button.

It must be an EPA thing? I am still not convinced the benefit of a little fuel saved offsets the cost of increased wear and tear on the engine, starter, battery.

    1. The auto start/stop provides no value to the vehicle owner. It only costs money and provides annoying vibrations and lurches.

      1. I have 2019 Terrain and you can hardly tell its there. If this is the only thing to complain about then its a good vehicle overall.

And those listening to car magazines about the plastic give me a break. Go into any mainstream Honda, Toyota, Ford SUV and they all have it. It looks the same in all, the grain is different so what. I also think it funny when GM uses the black shiny plastic in there cars the mags say it looks horrible but other manufactures use and it looks up scale. They have become so biased its retarded.

  5. In the manual shift mode, I heard that some other vehicle makes/models do not start stop?

Maybe this would be true for the Blazer?

  6. Auto start/stop defaulting to “on” at every ignition cycle makes sense. That’s the way they want the fuel economy to be tested.

Inconsistently offering a way to disable the feature on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis seems odd, though. Maybe GMA could investigate the decision making process. Does it have something to do with the target customer for the vehicle? Countries where it’s sold? No room on the dash for another button? New requirements coming that would completely prohibit disabling the feature and they don’t want to have to redesign for that?

  7. This is another vote for the, ‘Fire GM CEO Mary Barra camp,’ because this is a blunder that Barra has to take responsibility for because she greenlight this project and let it go to production with the existing flaw.

  8. The start stop is a EPA off cycle credit that is offered for items you can not accurately measure their effects under present EPA tests. Auto makers are gaining these credits with start stop, AFM, solar glass, reflective paints, and many more accepted technologies.

I hav3 yet to get a clear answer why some vehicles get a shut off and others don’t. It may be if the have a shut off the credit is less?

The EPA looks at these things not just as a Fuel MPG thing but as a emissions reduction thing.

These Rube Goldberg technologies are what is keeping some vehicles as large as they are and engine with as much power as they have. With out things could be smaller and less powerful.

Just another way the goverm3nt is looking out for you.

Note there are two companies I know that have modules for some of these models that plugs in the OBD2 port and eliminates the auto stop. I expect more to come to market.

Beware automakers are also moving to rolling code computers that would negate tuners and aids like this.

  9. No way for the Blazer to even be considered for a test drive when I replace our Outback this summer.

Not having a disable switch when every one of your competitors offer one is a mistake. Auto start/stop is the most hated feature in new cars.

  10. First they make this vehicle in Mexico as they are laying off thousands of workers. Then they slap a comical luxury price tag on the RS and premier trims. Now we learn you can’t disable the stop/start. And to add insult to injury this thing is what GM expects customers will flock to now that they are axing the Impala, LaCrosse and XTS sedans. I’m not even going to bring up the outrage expressed by thousands of forum members at calling it a Blazer. Sorry but this child is one that will go totally unloved by me!

    1. If that is the actual intention, as an Impala and XTS owner, they lost me.

  14. GREAT DRIVING VEHICLE BUT I WILL NEVER BUY ONE WITHOUT A BYPASS FOR THE STOP-START FUNCTION AS LONG AS THERE IS A COMPETITIVE OPTION. MY CONCERN IS TRYING TO DART ACROSS A BUSY INTERSECTION WHEN SECONDS DO MATTER. THE NEW VEHICLE FIRED BACK UP VERY QUICKLY BUT WHEN I LATER ASKED TO DRIVE ANY USED VEHICLE WITH 80K+ MILES ON IT TO COMPARE ENGINE REACTION TIMES, THERE WASN’T ONE AVAILABLE AT TWO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS I VISITED. I BELIEVE SOME GM MODELS HAVE NOW HAD THIS FEATURE FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS. I DON’T LIKE THE FEATURE ON A NEW ENGINE AND I SUSPECT AS THE ENGINE WEARS AND HAS AN INCREASED START-UP TIME, I WILL LIKE IT EVEN LESS.

  15. first of all I wouldn’t buy the blazer because of the no turn off stop start and because its made in MEXICO

  16. Purchased the 2019 V6 Blazer. Love the vehicle. Great power. Great handling. Very quiet ride. I discovered in a drive through that if the gear selector is shifted from D to L the engine will not auto stop. If the selector is put back into drive it will auto stop again. Very easy thing to do to stop the annoying feature in a constant start stop situation.

    1. In the new Blazer, if you manually shift the automatic transmission, then the automatic start/stop is off. That makes total sense.

  17. I have always bought GM, but the stop/start changed that. I would never buy a vehicle with stop/start. I also would never buy a 4 cylinder turbo. I bought a Passat GT. No stop/start. And, it has a V6. I’m disappointed GM has chosen to be PC rather than building a vehicle customers want.

    1. Without at least a button to shut it off the vehicle will not even get consideration . Im getting a new one soon and GM wont even be on the look at list and I currently have a GM built vehicle . I would have liked a new Trailblazer based on the Colorado but they botched that too , so right now it looks like Durango or Jeep GC . Ford will price the new Exploder out of range so that’s not an option either .

  20. As we had been waiting on the Blazer since the first news broke about it’s “comeback”, our local dealer called me as soon as the first one arrived. The new styling took me a little while to appreciate, but I absolutely hated the auto stop/start feature. It worked fine on this vehicle with 12 miles on it, but my concern is when it gets 70K plus miles on it and I’m crossing a busy highway between some fast movers, how fast is this thing going to fire? Having a new-gen Camaro and old Corvettes, I hadn’t kept track of the fact that this feature was now on most all other vehicles, with or without the infamous “button”. As most of the Pacific Imports we looked at did not have this, we almost bought one before discovering the 2019 Acadia V6 did not have the SS and the end of year discounts made it our clear choice. We are very pleased with this car but I understand most all 2020s will have auto SS. A couple vehicles have been reported to gain a bypass button but will still have all of the additional wiring and sensors that are part of the system. My new 2018 Silverado was among the last to not have SS. I have been a faithful Bowtie customer for most of my life, but I had to leave Chevrolet due to this one feature and is the reason we didn’t buy the Blazer.

  21. I just shift the transmission into manual (low) and put it in ninth gear to override the auto stop in city driving, it gets annoying when its hot out and the engine stops and you lose the A/C. I also agree it would put more wear on the starter and battery.

  22. put it in L mode and set to top 9 gear and no auto engine off, issue is it resets back to engine auto off each time shifter it moved out of L.

  23. Aside from the whole ridiculous stop start issue the styling stinks. To me it looks like a slightly larger Equinox with ugly headlights . Now they have botched the Trailblazer replacement also making it a small CUV the size of a Jeep renegade , no thanks . I have a real Trailblazer and I still have it and it still runs great for a 12 year old vehicle. The I6 motor you can’t kill .
