Poll: Are You Having Issues With Capless Fuel Fill?

Last week we discussed how capless fuel fill has become more commonplace across new GM vehicles: currently, the feature is present on 26 vehicles in GM’s U.S. lineup. We also presented some comments from owners who have had trouble with the technology. This time around, we’re taking a more quantitative approach to better understand whether the issues are widespread, or whether a minority is simply being more vocal about the issues they have experienced.

And in doing so, we ask: have you had any issues with capless fuel fill in a GM vehicle? Cast your reply in the poll below, and feel free to elaborate in the comments section.

For more information on capless fuel fill, including a comprehensive list of every GM vehicle equipped with the feature, see this link: GM capless fuel filler.

  1. It does not cause a problem, but the gas door should be LOCKING.

    1. I agree. If they’re going this route the door should be that way as a secondary precaution in spite of what they say as it being free from gathering dirt and debris.

Thats Right $338. Just ran out of warranty. What a wonderful engineering compliment so we eliminate turning a gas cap.

      2. My filler cap completely came unhooked. 2nd time I’ve had an issue. Now the dealer says the only way to fix it is replace the whole filler pipe at a cost of $420. This is ridiculous on GM to not fix this under a recall. Many have experienced this problem. I asked for a new filler pipe with a gas cap and they said that was not available. Poor design by GM, should be a recall. I am submitting my bill to Chevrolet. Can’t replace a $10 part without total replacement of the filler pipe at a cost to me of $420. 2017 Silverado, thinking time for a new one, but not with this issue. Toyota?? Nissan?? I have owned a Chevy all my life. Now 79 and don’t need this problem.

    6. The spring loaded flapper in mine became unseated, so the spring is hanging out still, but the flapper has fallen down and blocks being able to get fuel nozzle in. Sure it may not cause issues for some but it is an unnecessary fail point in my eyes. What was wrong with fuel caps, they kept that area clean and free of debris. People that live on country roads have issues with gravel dust in this compartment, and frequently have to wash this out, the flapper does nothing to prevent water from getting into the fuel system. It’s a terrible design.

  3. Gas pump stops all the time bc of this system. You can’t set set the grip and walk away for a second bc the pump will stop. Im not the only one that has had this problem. GM likes to release features that aren’t perfected. If I didn’t work for GM I wouldn’t own any GM product. Don’t get me started on the crappy transmissions. If you can’t do it correctly then out source it to a company that can.

When going thru a car wash below 32 degrees I have noticed water getting inside thru the gaps of filler door from the high pressure water then when time to fill up there is a small frozen chunk of water on very end of fill neck and if you dont dig it out (which is difficult) it will fall into tank when placing gas pump nozzle in. As most ppl know water in your gas is not good for your vehicles.

  11. There is no problem here.

    The flaps seal very well.

Note I said flaps as there is on at the top and a second lower down to steal gas is very difficult and to dump something in would take a long skinny funnel.

With over the years the number of cars I have seen run with no caps this system should be just fine.

Now if you want to stir up trouble ask about transmission issues on RWD GM 8 speed and Six speed vehicles.

The shudder issues is much more common.

There is a number of TSBs on it. Other brands also are seeing issues too.

While attempting to fill may son’s 2017 Silverado 1500, w/ 5.3L during a northeast winter cold snap, the filler door was ‘frozen’
shut and would not accept the gas nozzle at the gas station. Was on the road, and needed gas. Tried dry gas & WD 40 as drying agents. Finally had to force the nozzle into the filler neck. Now the filler flap will not close. The vehicle has NOT generated any ‘Check Engine’ lights / warnings.

  37. 2019 GMC Acadia. In January of 2020, while under warranty with only 15,000 miles or so, we were only able to fill the fuel take about half full. The pumps would continue to click off. It gradually got worse as time went on. The dealer replaced what I believe is the fill sensor. It worked pretty well after that and we could could fill the gas tank like any normal vehicle. Now it is November 2020, and it is starting to happen again. Can only get about 3/4 full without spending 15 extra minutes at the pump feathering the pump and clicking on/off to get the additional 5 gallons of gas in it. It is still under warranty and have another appointment with the dealer this Friday to hopefully find me a permanent fix. If this fix goes bad, I’m considering looking into lemon laws and see what can be done that route.

About a 1/2 gallon will be dispensed and then it will click off and I have to go start the pump again. I saw both of these complaints already listed so it’s not just me. But I wanna know where to get the $338 estimate for this flapper thing because I’d really like to save 200 bucks.

  44. A little more background on my issue with 2020 Cadillac CT5. My only issue is a frequent inability to fill without shutting off. I get 100% of my gas at Costco. Never had a problem with my 2017 CT6, or 2014 CTS there. If somebody is using the same pump as me on the other side, you can hear the flow rate slow down, and then I have no problems. It is clearly the design of the fill tube and its inability to handle the faster rate.

  52. Replaced capless filler for my 2017 Silverado. Cost $416.38. The Chevy dealer wanted near $600. I will never buy another vehicle with such a bad design gas cap. For over 100 years a vehicle gas tank used a screw cap. At worst you would lose the cap and replace it for less than $10. Now, the with the capless filler, it collects dirt and water directly deposits into the gas tank, and breaks for no apparent reason, causing the pieces to fall into the fuel neck, clogging the the fuel neck so you cant fill your tank . So much for making a better mouse trap. What’s next? Re-invent the wheel?

  55. 2018 Chevy LTZ Z71 currrently has just under 16K miles on 9/20/2021. So far I’ve had more than a few issues with this goofy system. Fuel nozzle has gotten stuck twice and had to twist and reposition the nozzle until I found just the right angle to get the nozzle out. A real pita! Also, on 9/2/21, found my gas door open after parking in a hotel lot all night (No, I didn’t leave it open!). Not sure if gas was stolen or not, because I was low on fuel when I parked and checked in. Hotel manager advised they’ve had 2 recent reports of gas thefts from guests.
Worst issue… My wife ran out of gas while driving home in my truck from a meeting. She’d stopped for gas when the little fuel pump icon came on. When she found a station, the gas pumps were ALL “out of service”. Next closest station was 24 miles away. She ended up running too low, as info on dash indicated she had 13 miles worth of fuel and had 19 miles to go according to GPS Navi. She called for roadside assistance. They gave her an eta of 1.5 hours (this was at 2 AM on a dark stretch of Hwy! The AAA tow truc got there in less than an hour. T/truck driver asked her if she had the funnel. Search the truck, …NO FUNNEL!!! T/truck driver tried to use his large funnel, but it would not work with the cap less system. She had to wait 45 minutes for another T/truck which had a special funnel for the cap less system. This capless “CRAPFUL” system is for people that have no clue how to tighten a gas cap a few extra clicks and don’t know how to use the “cap dock” that’s built into the fuel door so the tethered cap doesn’t dangle. In other words, “clueless lazy drivers”. It’s going to cost me about $400 to have a “capped” fuel fill system installed on my relatively NEW low mileage big bucks truck. Should have kept my old 91 454 SS. GM, stop making changes to perfectly good systems on your trucks. If lazy, clueless people can’t read an owners manual, don’t know the precautions of a closed loop system, and don’t know how to properly tighten a gas cap, then perhaps they should reconsider their vehicle choice or just call a cab or uber. If it ain’t broke, please stop “fixing” it. Just because the blue oval brand did it, doesn’t necessarily make it “a better idea”. I’ve been buying & driving Chevy Trucks since my first vehicle when I was 17. An 8 year old 1949 Chevy 5 window 3100. Paid a lot for it ($850), but it was a perfect first “car” for a 17 year old and never gave me a bit of trouble. Since then I’ve owned 19 Chevy trucks! 13 brand new ones and 7 preowned ones. Love my Silverado, but please give new age engineers more time off.

  61. I have a 2017 Chevrolet Colorado – gasoline engine – with the capless fuel filler system.

This past Monday (10 January 2022) I was trying to refuel when I noticed ice was completely blocking the outer flap from opening, so I could not insert the fuel nozzle. The only recourse I had was to to chip the ice away and pry the outer flap off its hinge so I could move it out of the way and refuel.
I now have a loose outer fuel flap inside the filler neck which makes it difficult to refuel as it gets in the way, it cannot be placed back on its hinge and is too big to pull out of the filler neck.

The fuel door does not prevent water entering into the downward angled fuel neck and freezing the fuel flap in place.
This capless filler system is useless in any climate that sees freezing temperatures. It is a poor design that was obviously not thought through very thoroughly! Time to send your engineers back to school!

What solution does GM have for this?

Anyway, my Tahoe has been at a local dealer which I’ll not name going into the 3rd day for the “slow / no gas fill” issue. 67. After having to replace the ‘Capless Fuel Fill’ on my son’s 2017 Silverado after it froze up during a winter road trip, I tried several different methods to deal with GM’s P.P.D.
The best I have found so far is a
    rubber plumbing cap:
FERNCO 2” QWIK CAP (PQC-102). It’s the tightest, lowest profile solution that I’ve been able to come up with. There are no clearance issues with the fuel filler door.
I use a utility knife to trim the two sealing ribs on the inside of the cap, and then sometimes lightly ‘sand’ the interior mating surface, as needed to insure a proper snug fit, that isn’t too tight, or too loose
    All of my cars are so equipped;
as are family & friends’ cars.
Seals out dirt, dust, snow, salt,
and water at car washes when the brushes inadvertently pop open the fuel filler door!

  68. The top flapper just fell off the hinge pin. The spring is fine. You can’t pull it through because it is to0 big. It is a poor replacement for a gas cap. I have a 2017 Silverado, bought new. The flapper started hanging open after about a year. They need an upgrade kit to go back to a screw-in cap. It works better than a capless.

  69. We need an aftermarket company to make a locking gas cap that seals for these vehicles. I made my own by own using a tapered rubber plug. Drilled a hole thru the center with a washer slightly larger than the plug on the big end (to prevent the plug from falling thru), machine screw thru the plug with a smaller flat washer and nut on the smaller end (mar the threads on the screw so the nut can’t fall off). Pop it in the filler opening and tighten the screw to expand the rubber plug and seal the system. Check engine light cleared and hasn’t thrown a code since. A lock gas cap would do the same thing only much easier to deal with. GM could always acknowledge the problem and make the gas cap available themselves. I’m sure every vehicle with this system will experience this issue sooner or later.

  70. Yes we are having an issue with our 2017 sierra, the spring flap stays open and our engine light is on. We have been using a spray paint cap over the filler hole so nothing gets in there. GM should have a recall.
