General Motors has announced it is offering up to three months of free OnStar service to over 19 million eligible Chevrolet customers.
The automaker says this free of charge offer will give owners “an extra layer of security during the winter months, which can bring dangerous driving conditions with heavy snowfall, ice and freezing rain.”
All Chevy owners have to do to enable the free OnStar service is hit the blue button in their vehicles and tell the OnStar advisor that they would like to sign up for the automaker’s complimentary OnStar Safety & Security offer. From here, the advisor automatically provide one month of OnStar safety and security services at no cost, with an additional two months of coverage available if the owner agrees to put a credit card on file for monthly auto renewal in the plan.
“These services can help Chevy customers drive with confidence during some of the most dangerous times to be on the road,” said Chevy marketing boss Paul Edwards.“With OnStar, we’re bringing peace of mind to owners, knowing that an advisor is ready to help.”
GM says this offer is available on any properly equipped 2006 and newer Chevrolet vehicle with inactive OnStar service. The enrollment period ends on Jan. 23rd, 2019, so if you want to get in on this complimentary 1-3 months of free OnStar, you will want to act soon.
OnStar provides multiple assistance services including Automatic Crash Response, Roadside Assistance, Emergency Services, Crisis Assist and access to a live advisor at the push of a button.
You may not feel as though you need these services, but this complimentary offer can be beneficial to the elderly when driving in the winter or for those who become anxious driving in poor conditions such as snow and freezing rain.
OnStar is typically priced from $19 a month for the entry-level ‘Protection’ plan. A basic OnStar plan is also free for five years after the purchase of a new GM vehicle.
Why no GMC, Buick or Cadillac?
It’s so typical of GM to alienate their loyal customer base whether it’s limiting options to higher priced vehicles or this. If you give one kid a treat you have to give them all a treat, GM.
In other words, too many people have cancelled, or just not kept their service, so they’re offering the same “deal” that they offer to new car buyers. Can’t sell personal data if there’s no personal data to sell…
Onstar is semi-convenient but there are so many other services one can do with apps on their phone too.
CDMA is being shut down at the end of 2019 by Verizon. Most older vehicles without LTE OnStar will be shut off at some point next year, unless Verizon extends service. I don’t see GM doing another module upgrade program, though it would be pretty trivial to design LTE VCIMs for older cars.
