Competitive Sales Comparison

Chevy Colorado sales during the fourth quarter of 2018 were flat. Though that’s better than the 7 percent downturn experienced its corporate cousin, the GMC Canyon, the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier posted significantly higher sales growth of 22 and 5 percent, respectively, during the same time frame. The results enabled the Tacoma to not only remain America’s best-selling midsize pickup truck during the quarter, but to also sell 12,000 units more than the Colorado. In fact, the Tacoma’s 42,065 deliveries were higher than combined Colorado and Canyon sales (38,223 units).

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment grew 8.54 percent in Q4 2018 and 18 percent during the complete 2018 calendar year.

We are including Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments.

The GM Authority Take

The fact that GM is selling 30,000 units of the midsize Colorado in a single quarter is great and wonderful. But it’s still rather irksome that Toyota manages to outsell the Colorado and its GMC variant, combined, by a healthy margin.

We believe that this is due to Toyota’s rock-solid reputation in the midsize truck space, providing a reliable product that’s desirable. In addition, Toyota has been incentivizing the Tacoma more sparingly than Chevrolet has been with the Colorado, while also having stronger contractual ties with commercial fleet clients that it essentially took over when GM pulled out of the midsize pickup truck space around 2012.

About The Numbers

  • All percent change figures compared to Chevrolet Colorado Q4 2017 sales, except as noted
  • In the United States, there were 77 selling days in Q4 2018 and 76 selling days in Q4 2017

About Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet's smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana and the similarly-sized S10, but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado's trim levels in Mexico).

The current Colorado was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.

The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees a new Colorado ZR2 Bison package, new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of Chevrolet infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, a second in-cabin microphone, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. The street-focused Colorado RST and Z71 Trail Runner off-roader are also added to the lineup. The manual transmission is deleted from the powertrain lineup.

A midcycle refresh is expected for the 2020 model year. It is believed that the update will bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.

For the U.S. and Canada, the Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. The model sold in Asia-Pacific is built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong, which is operated by GM Thailand. The GM Sao Jose Dos Campos plant operated by GM Brazil builds the Chevy S10 for South America.

  1. Once again I will say it. Contradictory to the GM TV ads. Toyota simply takes care of there customers better. Even in a recall situation Toyota makes the CUSTOMER feel better. IMO

And once again I still cant figure out why GM can’t see it. GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Pay attention GM your CUSTOMERS are calling !!

  2. The Ranger is arriving at dealers now, I expect it will outsell the Colorado, but not the Taco and maybe not Colorado/Canyon combined?

  3. I’m not here to troll. Just to offer some insight. I just recently bought a new Tacoma and I considered and test drove the Colorado. My objections to the Colorado were as follows. 1.) The air dam. I could not clear even small bumps in unpaved surfaces with it without upgrading to the ZR2 at around $50k, which the dealer didn’t even have on their lot. Tacomas on the other hand don’t require an expensive trim level upgrade to get a decent approach, breakover and departure angles. 2.) There was a rattling noise during the test drive. I asked the salesman, what is that noise. His reply “I guess they don’t make’m like they used to.” I thought that was funny at the time but that’s exactly the problem. They are making ’em JUST LIKE they used to. 3.) My mechanic, who is a chevy guy advised against the colorado. He recommended the SILVERado but warned me against the COLORado. 4.) There’s just a different feel to the Toyota dealerships. They have more a of sophisticated flare to them and that makes you feel like you’re getting a more sophisticated product.
I approached The Colorado with an open mind and really liked the seats better but at Tacoma won.

    1. I’ll say I’ve never gotten up close and personal with a Colorado’s air dam, but I guarantee you I could take one off in under a half hour (for $0).

  4. Well I am a actual owner of a 2017 Canyon Denali.

I could not be more happy with my choice.

The truck has been trouble free accept for one issue and it was a seal on the transmission. They replaced the entire transmission with no muss or fuss and it has been running great since.

The dealers was great they did the work fast and even gave me a new $54,000 GMC Acadia Denali to drive.

Are there things I would see changed? Yes but I have never owned a vehicle I would not like somethings different. Some things have already been addressed like 6 way seats.

I have no rattles or even much road noise.

As for the air dam it is removable and there is no need to buy a ZR to go without. It just unscrews. The owners manual even states it is removable.

My buddy has a Taco. It is nice but the power is lacking, transmission feels unrefined, the seating is very bad and very untruck like. I also note many of the Tacos are low in the tail.

Not a fan of the plastic bed either.

I never expected GM to take over from Toyota. People like the Taco and truck owners are loyalno matter the brand. GM on the other hand to have as many sales as they have after leaving the market is good as on the forum many owners came from Ford and Toyota not just GM.

Toyota also has high fleet sales, take them away and the numbers get closer.

The Ford is coming but that is good as GM will move to their upgrade and second gen truck even sooner. Competition drive product development.

Would I rebuy what I have today… Yes with no hesitation.

    1. Well I am an actual owner of a 2015 GMC Canyon LTE All terrain.

I could be happier with my choice. I love this truck, comfortable to drive, easy to use for most things. After a tune for the HORRIBLE GM transmission shifts it is a dream to drive and I would guess the 2017 shifts even better than this one. I love it how you made it seem no big deal getting a new transmission in a 2017 truck. Mine had 2 recalls and still has a special coverage for a faulty part GM will not fix. Mine however rattles and rattles in the front, most of it is metal exhaust shields that are loose do to a push pin holding them. it just doesn’t bother me enough to fix yet.

I do agree, just take the air dam off if you don’t want it. I installed AMP power steps and my wife and older people love them.

And again I would also never expect GM to take any market share from Toyota either because- wait for it- GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

      1. Look I have owned and had nearly 40 new GM cars in my immediate family since the early 60’s . In that time my transmission issue was the first major issue I have had. My father had a cam issue in the 70’s.

I am not upset because #1 it is my first and only major issue. #2 my dealer took care of it ASAP with out me making a fuss. They were very customer service oriented and took care of my issue. They even gave me a new higher value vehicle to drive.

I am a happy customer that had something that could have been a nightmare but they took care of me exceeding my expectations. In other small issues I again can say I have never had a bad experience.

I know GM has too many dealers and they can not afford to buy them out. I also know a minority of those dealers have poor service. How do I increase my chances for good service I stay with the reliable ones that have served me for years.

I always found it amusing that my fathers buddy went to Toyota because he was disappointed with his Olds. Well I knew he often had issues as he would have to ask my father to pick him up for a ride to work when he had to drop the Toyota off at the dealer. Yet my father never needed to be picked up for issues on his GM car.

I am sure you may have had issues. But as to how you were served I suspect you made some mistakes. One you continue to go to the bad dealer. Two you may have had expectations that just could never be satisfied or were unrealistic. Three some customers just like to play the victim.

I will never say GM could not do better with some things but the continued complaints on multiple issues on multiple vehicles is a bit suspect.

I have wrenched on cars for several decades and the truth is no vehicle is perfect. Most have known issues. GM has their issues but no better or worse than the others anymore.

The bottom line is I have enjoyed a good customer experience even when I have had any issue. Crap happens they took care of it what else should I complain about?

Life is too short to obsess over this. If you really have had all these issues please just sell out and buy a Toyota and then go to their forum to complain when they are not to your satisfaction, We all would be better off here.

If I had the issues you post I would not even be here as I would not be a GM owner. If you get hit over the head stop going back.

  5. The Colorado is a good truck, and many folks and truck reviewers think it is a better truck than the Tacoma. But it’s hard to compete with a truck who has been the mid-sized truck leader for SO many years and one that offers very good reliability (so I’m told) and great resale value. But it’s like the Toyota Tundra trying to compete with the Silverado/Sierra 1500 (same trucks) or Ford F150. In 2018, the Tundra sold a measly 118,258 trucks compared to 805,135 Silverados/Sierras. Even the Colorado/Canyon (same truck) sold more trucks than the Tundra. Sure, GM would love to sell more mid-sizers and be the leader, but so far, it’s been a very successful truck selling 168,334 total combined units in 2018. Hopefully GM will update the Colorado/Canyon in 2020 to be even more competitive since the new Ranger will most likely steal more of the GM customers than the loyal Taco fan base. But who knows, maybe some of those that bought the antiquated Taco won’t be quite as happy with it and will give one of the GM twins a shot next time.

  6. I always find these truck sales interesting. I bet for every tacoma I see on the road I see 10 colorados. And it’s just not trucks, I see alot more cruzes than civics and corollas. Even the impala is on even keel with the camry and accord.

      1. Can you read? look above I own a 2015 SLE All terrain, and I am going to buy a diesel Denali some day.

Look I am happy for you that all your GM dreams come true.

35 Years of my 38 have been good also.

That does NOT change facts. We are two people out of many. Two people, one says this, one says that. It does not make you right, it does not make me right.

You have your GM stories. I have my Gm stories.

You have wrenched on decades. I have also wrenched on vehicles for decades.

And again when you say why don’t you just buy a Toyota then, that’s what GM customers are doing and have been doing for years now. How do you think Toyota got so big?

Instead of addressing the problem and getting to the bottom of it, it is just easier to make up an excuse and say just move on then, and they do.

You keep pounding blind GM greatness. I will keep pounding GM flaws. Maybe somewhere in the center GM will get it right.

If all the feedback GM receives is blind loyalists praise what will ever change, what will ever get better.

Obviously you have skin in the game. I however do it for fun and relaxation.

        1. Thick skin just tired of people who play victims all the time.

You just pound GM failure and I just counter because I have not had the same experience, the full story needs to be expressed as you are not the norm in many ways.

If the pot is hot stop picking it up. The broken record here is becoming suspect as no one has that continued bad luck unless they have unrealistic expectations or they continue to keep going to the same bad dealer.

I have dealt wth 4 different GMC dealers on the last 4 vehicles in various ways and have had only one bad experience. That was in the attempt to buy a new vehicle from a poor salesman. I fixed the issue by going to a competing dealer buying a better model at an even better deal.

The power to fix your issue is in your hands so either fix it or stop complaining.

          1. I am the norm in many ways, READ. Sure more GM owners have a better experience than the ones who do not, but a lot more people live without cancer than the ones who have it. That doesn’t mean they don’t have cancer and we shouldn’t keep trying to find a cure. Like your children if you don’t tell them to clean their room, they wont.

You call it complaining, I call it Factual awareness. Be aware of what is happening, READ.

            Reply
            1. Comparing your issues to cancer is really way off base. Cancer is something you have no choice over unless you are smoking 6 packs a day. Most of the victims have no choice and it is unavoidable do to family history. Just look at the kids in St Judes.

On the other hand you have many options here and should be in control of what happens here. The power to stop bad service is to go elsewhere.

I had poor service on a Ford with many issues with the the car from the sway bar falling off to the doors sagging and warped head and leaking head gaskets. I went to several dealers and while I loved driving the car I never have considered a Ford again.

If you keep going back and keep having issues you need to examine your complaints and if they are reasonable and then look to what you can to to change the paradox.

Complaining constantly on the web is not going to fix your issues.

You are not the norm. That is for sure. As for the web it is the pit for those who complain. Few people go to the web to say damn my car is perfect and I just wanted to post that.

              1. First and foremost you are confused yet again in what I am saying.

So here it goes again, one more time for you and GM.

I am NOT complaining, And this has NOTHING to do with the SERVICE at the dealer.
The advisor does a good job 5 star. The tech does a good job 5 star.

GM HAS ZERO CUSTOMER SUPPORT. GM not the dealer GM.

If GM had any kind of CUSTOMER SERVICE, GM would have quality standards like,” If we GM sent a letter telling a CUSTOMER to take the vehicle to the dealership and do this repair for free we GM would make sure that repair was done,”

AGAIN this has NOTHING to do with the dealership, the dealership is doing what they are being told by GM. And when I call GM they are telling me the dealership is wrong. So again GM HAS ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE. All GM needs to do is call me the CUSTOMER and tell me the CUSTOMER the same thing they GM is telling the dealer.

                Seems simple!!

Again this has NOTHING to do with SERVICE.

                It is CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Maybe you simply don’t know what CUSTOMER SERVICE is.

                Definition of customer service:
The assistance and advise provided by a COMPANY “GM” to those who BUY “not the dealer” or USE ” again not the dealer” its products.

                Again one more time:
The assistance and advice provided by a company to those people who buy or use its products.
Nowhere is the mention of a dealer. GM has ZERO CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Don’t talk to me about cancer, it is the same as this only life is not involved. The cancer victim does have a choice. If the cancer victim stayed at home and said nothing, nothing would be done about cancer. The ONLY reason that people work every day to try to cure and prevent cancer is cancer victims have said something.

  9. The biggest problem with the Colorado is that it looks like a Malibu. It’s not tough or trucky looking at all unless you get the most expensive versions. Even in those the interior has the quality you’d find in a subcompact but without any of the charm. They need to butch it up for the next update because on paper it’s a great truck.

    1. Be careful what you wish for. If you think the current design looks UGLY, wait until the new GM designers refreshes it in 2020 with the dreaded fish gills/vents in the front bumper like the new Silverado and Camaro. I am betting the new refreshed Colorado in 2020 (if it comes) will look worse than the current one, but I hope I’m wrong. I am not a big fan of the newer GM designs.
