2020 GMC Sierra HD: Hot Or Not?

The 2020 GMC Sierra HD debuted earlier this month with improved looks, a bigger footprint and new technologies, ushering in a new era for General Motors’ premium truck and SUV brand.

While the new Sierra HD certainly looks different than the outgoing model, it’s not quite as radical of a redesign as the 2020 Silverado HD. Judging by the internet’s collective response to that truck, that’s probably a good thing. That’s not to say GMC hasn’t changed quite a lot, though. The new Sierra HD is much bigger than before and has more cargo and passenger space. It also has a wider set look than the outgoing truck, giving it a more confident stance.

Under the hood is an available Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel L5P engine that offers an SAE-certified 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is a 10-speed automatic, which is Allison branded but isn’t actually designed or built by Allison. A new gas engine will also be available, but GM has yet to provide details on that engine.

Other features on the 2020 GMC Sierra HD include GMC’s ProGrade Trailering System, which includes a rear-vision camera with hitch-view, an auto-electric parking brake, an integrated trailer brake controller, hitch area lighting and an in-vehicle Trailering App with trailer diagnostics. GMC will also be offering an off-road focused AT4 variant, which gets Rancho shocks, underbody skid plates, an off-road driving mode, a locking rear diff and 18-inch wheels shod in all-terrain tires. Don’t forget the available MultiPro tailgate, either.

The interior isn’t so different from the outgoing GMC Sierra HD, unfortunately, but GM has thrown in a new rear camera mirror and an available 15-inch-diagonal head-up display. There’s new leather trim colors and new available wood trim, too.

With all this considered, is the 2020 GMC Sierra HD Hot or Not? Have your say by voting in the poll below and feel free to explain the reason why you voted the way you did in the comments.

  1. Nice looking truck on the outside.

I like the mirrors unlike some do to the less view obstruction.

Drivetrain “platform” is OK would be great if anyone knew anything about reliability of the new NOT Allison trans.( GM isn’t exactly known for the best treatment of CUSTOMERS with transmission troubles.)

I like the interior just not the look of the dash. Seats ok. Switch locations ok. Rear air and room ok. Just don’t like the look of that dash.

The option array will be the biggest hurdle now.

    Lets see them.

    1. The transmission was co-developed with ford. Made by the same company that makes their transmissions for the gas engines.

      1. I thought it was the 1500 10 speed that was co developed with Ford not the HD 10 speed . I thought the HD 10 speed was co developed with Allison.

I’m guessing someone here will know the facts.

        1. That is correct , the HD’ s are using actual Allison Transmissions, while the 1500’s have the Allison Branded types.

          1. That is not correct !!

The HD 10 speed is a GM transmission assembled by GM, with GM parts, developed with Allison.

GM kept the Allison name when they sold there share of Allison.

            It is NOT an Allison.

  4. Great looking truck, especially from the side. It looks like a “real” truck should look like. It is enough modern without losing the aggressiveness of a truck. I would love to own one lol. Maybe they will let the interior slide when they do truck of the year contest

  6. I am seriously in the market for a new truck this summer. The Chevy had me thinking a 2019 all black sport appearance package dually. The GMC has me thinking 2020 GMC SLT or Denali. But I really prefer 6 passenger seating, especially in a truck as big as a crew cab dually… Heck even my wife’s Equinox is 5 passenger.

    2. Some are garbage trucks and from what I understand they do a good job. Most of the contractors I have talked to say they are vey happy with their performance. The new tailgate helps with all the loading & unloading.

    3. If that’s how you see these trucks then stop paying attention to the information that is being posted on these trucks and focus strictly in something that you like, life will work out so much better for you at the end.

  8. I think it looks good I think gmc is going to outsell chevy the only thing I see they need to improve on is a better interior hopefully one day gm will come to there senses and put more thought into that

    1. It’s not an allison transmission. It’s a GM transmission they are calling it allison. Big mistake as that was one of the great things about the heavy duty trucks.

        1. Jwl,

While the Allison has been a great automatic, its not necessarily a mistake to replace it with an in-house 10 speed called an “Allison” unless the new tranny sucks. Considering the risk of loosing loyal Duramax customers, I am willing to bet the new ten speed has been well designed and tested since tow rating has also increased. Hopefully “durable” gets added to its description, but only time will tell. The 100k powertrain warrantee helps and I intend to buy an extended one if I go with a 2020 just in case…

          1. Not a snowballs chance in hell that the GM made transmission will be as durable as the allison.

            1. You can’t predict anything about this transmission at this point until the “Real World” Test Numbers are posted..let’s calm down for a minute!!!

  10. Of all the new GM HD offerings I like the looks of the High Country the best, and I like the body lines on the Silverado over the Sierra, not a fan of the Sierra HD grills with the 2 cut out air intakes at the top…still want to see an LTZ though

  11. Don’t care for the front fender wrapping around the front. L5p motor has fuel pump issues. I won’t be replacing my lmm ant time soon. Gm owns the truck even after you buy it.

  13. I have driven Chevy and gmc all my life and I’m 60 now. I have loved most of them and was planning on buying a new one in 2020 but I think I will by one a couple years old because the new GMC looks to much like a Ford and that’s just wrong. Good luck in 2021
