Along with the dramatic reveal of the 2020 GMC Sierra HD yesterday evening was the arrival of the first-ever 2020 GMC Sierra AT4 HD. The rugged truck promises levels of enhanced off road capabilities from the rest of the new 2020 Sierra HD family. Sounds like the perfect tool for hauling chopped wood down a remote trail to the off-grid cabin.
The 2020 GMC Sierra AT4 HD replaces the Sierra HD All Terrain X from the previous generation model. Before, the All Terrain X came in 18-inch wheels, where the 2020 Sierra AT4 HD offers 20-inch wheels, but loses the intimidating sport bar behind the cabin. Otherwise, the kit is very similar. Here’s what you get:
- Off-road suspension, Rancho Shocks, skid plates, and an Eaton locking rear differential.
- Off-Road mode activated through an electronic Traction Select system.
- Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist.
On the technological side, the 2020 Sierra AT4 HD comes with a massive 15-inch diagonal heads-up display with an off-road inclinometer, and HD Surround Vision1 for low-speed views of vehicle surroundings. The interior also has its own unique trim from the rest of the 2020 GMC Sierra HD family, differentiated by darkened aluminum finishing, accented with Jet Black leather seats with a Kalahari trim, and all-weather floor liners. Of course, it wouldn’t be a formulaic GM truck variant without embroidered headrests.
The exterior of the 2020 Sierra AT4 HD speaks for itself. The red recovery hooks are becoming an instantly recognizable design cue, while the dark chrome exterior finishes and body-color bumpers, and a smoked grille surround.
Expect GMC to offer both the 6.6L gasoline V8 and 6.6L Duramax diesel V8 in the Sierra AT4 HD.
The big off-road truck segment is a fairly small one, but the obvious direct rival to the 2020 GMC Sierra AT4 HD is the next-generation Ram Power Wagon, recently revealed at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show. What the Ram Power Wagon offers that the GMC does not includes an electrically disconnecting anti-roll bar, a locking front differential to go with the locking rear, and a 12,000-pound Warn winch clipped to the front bumper. The Power Wagon is a gas-only truck to save weight.

If ever I were to get a GM truck right now, this would be the one!!! I, like many on this site, have been quite vocal against the current state of GM’s newest rigs! But this is certainly the one exception!
Will this have the rear view mirror camera?
No one else is talking about how the HD’s now have AutoTrac 4×4? I’d say that is the biggest news here!
Has the defective fuel pump system been resolved. It used to have a cp4 the fix was a new design cp3 I think
When can one order? Ext. colors? Int. colors? Wish the website would say more about colors, options, etc. But I like it!
