The GM Authority Take

The 7 percent growth rate in Chevy Colorado sales during the third quarter of 2018 is definitely welcome news, until one considers that Toyota Tacoma sales jumped 28 percent during the same time frame. The results enabled the Tacoma to not only remain America’s best-selling midsize pickup truck, but to also sell almost twice as many units as the Colorado.

Sales Numbers - Midsize Mainstream Pickup Trucks - Q3 2018 - USA

MODEL Q3 18 / Q3 17 Q3 18 Q3 17 YTD 18 / YTD 17 YTD 18 YTD 17

CANYON +0.52% 8,425 8,381 +8.61% 25,273 23,269
TOTAL +15.78% 128,904 111,333 +20.93% 373,594 308,932

The Colorado remained the second best-selling midsize truck, outselling the Nissan Frontier as well as the Colorado’s platform mate, the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales).

We believe that Colorado sales increased in Q3 due to a mix of the following factors:

  • A desirable product in a growing segment
  • Decent fleet and commercial deliveries, on which GM has been focusing from a sales operations standpoint
  • Healthy incentives at the retail level

The mid-size mainstream pickup truck segment grew 16 percent in the third quarter of 2018 and 21 percent in the first nine months of 2018.

We are including Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments.

About Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet's smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana and the similarly-sized S10, but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado's trim levels in Mexico).

The current Colorado was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.

The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees a new Colorado ZR2 Bison package, new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of Chevrolet infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, a second in-cabin microphone, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models. The street-focused Colorado RST and Z71 Trail Runner off-roader are also added to the lineup. The manual transmission is deleted from the powertrain lineup.

A midcycle refresh is expected for the 2020 model year. It is believed that the update will bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.

For the U.S. and Canada, the Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. The model sold in Asia-Pacific is built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong, which is operated by GM Thailand. The GM Sao Jose Dos Campos plant operated by GM Brazil builds the Chevy S10 for South America.

  1. Perhaps if GM offered a decent gas truck engine like the 2.7 liter with a standard transmission, I’d jump right on the bandwagon.

  2. The 3.6 is best in class as of now as the Toyota engine is very lacking. Reliable but underpowered.

It is just pure brand loyalty and you are not going to change decades of loyalty overnight.

I have a Canyon and love it.

Sat in. Taco and just hated the seating it is very odd for a truck.

I expect the 2.7 in the next gen to suck up the volume needed with it only going to 10% of the full size. But you will get saddled with start stop.

  3. I agree with Scott the 3.5 in the Tacoma is an absolute slug. Right now the Colorado with the 3.6/8 speed is the best overall powertrain. BUT, the new Ranger comes standard with the 2.3 EB and 10 speed and I have no doubt that it will handily outperform the Colorado 3.6 both towing and unloaded. If GM wants to stay competitive nin the midsize segment the Colorado/Canyon need to be updated ASAP with better interior materials and the V6 needs to be replaced with the 2.7 turbo. Keep the 2.5 as the base though. It’s cheap and reliable so it’s perfect for the fleet customers.

  4. The article shows me the sales of Chevy Colorado increased 7% when Toyota Tacoma increased 28%. four times Chevy Colorado. a number worth learning.

  5. Why GM don’t put the 2.7 and the 3.0 DURAMAX and advertise its reliability towards the competition?

  6. Might note the true number.

Toyota sales year to date 147,421

GM trucks Colorado and Canyon. 106,303.

Then factor in this is not their primary truck as GM moves nearly a million full size when Toyota struggles in full size at 116.285.

GM for only being back in the market segment again after being gone a few years is doing well.

    1. GM moves over 2 million full size??????? Possibly half that number?

Wait until Ford starts selling the Ranger. Sales of the GM twins will stagnate.

I had the first-year Colorado LT and it was the most underwhelming vehicle I’ve ever owned!
