Competitive Sales Comparison
The Regal family was outsold by its two other segment contenders during the third quarter – the Acura TLX and the Kia Stinger.
The difference between the Regal and the TLX was quite vast, with the Acura selling over than twice as many units as the Buick. Be that as it may, the Regal managed to grow sales, while the TLX saw a 19 percent drop. Meanwhile, the Kia sold 4,361 units, 1,568 units more than the Regal line, doing so with only one body style variant while also commanding higher transaction prices.

TOTAL | +30.11% | 13,296 | 10,219 | +29.03% | 47,333 | 36,685 |
The midsize premium car segment expanded 30 percent in Q3 2018 and 29 percent in the first nine months of 2018. The performance bucks the trend of decrease car sales, which GM has used as a reason to discontinue six sedans from its model portfolio.
The GM Authority Take
Buick Regal sales continues to gain, with the model showing rather healthy growth during the third quarter. We attribute the circumstance to the following circumstances:
- Widespread availability of the new, sixth-generation Regal Sportback and TourX wagon
- An attractive, modern and highly competitive product offering in the Regal Sportback
- A unique, attractive, modern and highly competitive product offering in the Regal TourX
- A lower base price compared to direct rivals
However, the Regal family still has a long way to go before making a notable dent in its segment, as the Kia Stinger and Acura TLX outsell it significantly.

2018 Buick Regal TourX
Buick revealed the all-new Regal in April 2017 at the New York Auto Show and the vehicles launched for the 2018 model year. The sixth-gen model is based on the GM E2 platform, which also underpins the 2016 and newer Chevrolet Malibu and upcoming Cadillac XT4. The Regal is also sold as the second-generation Opel-Vauxhall Insignia and the NG 2018 Holden Commodore in Australia and New Zealand by GM subsidiary Holden.
Prior to the launch of the sixth-gen model, the fifth-generation Regal was available for a total of seven model years, from 2011 thru 2017. That model rode on the GM Epsilon II platform also shared with the first-gen Opel-Vauxhall Insignia and eighth-generation Malibu.
For the 2019 model year, the Buick Regal family gets a new Avenir trim level, along with Whisper Beige seats with Ebony interior accents for the Regal Sportback as well as a new cabin air ionizer for the Sportback and TourX models.
The sixth-gen Buick Regal is built at the following facilities:
- Opel Rüsselsheim plant in Germany, satisfying North American markets, and
- Shanghai-GM Jinqiao South plant operated by GM China and its partner, SAIC, satisfying the Chinese market

It is not fair to compare Kia Stinger to the Buick Regal. where is the Régal G.N.X ????? If theyhave a market for the Stinger imagine the marquet for a Regal G.N.X……………….
Kia Stinker! I can’t believe anybody would spend more than 20k on a kia, no matter the engine displacement
We were seriously considering a Regal GS to replace my wife’s 2012 Cruze, but will look elsewhere due to the imminent demise of the car. Until recently, I couldn’t have imagined even looking at a Toyota or Honda for my next purchase. We’ve owned nothing but GM products since 1995.
Several people on this site have also mentioned the lack of standard safety gear on GM vehicles. I agree. This makes NO sense, given how many competitors offer these important features throughout their lineups. I hope GM has something innovative planned for the next few years, but we surely aren’t seeing any signs of that right now.
Why don’t you ask Mark Reuss, who heads global product development. He’s doing such a great job that he was paid, gifted, granted? almost $8 million last year. He works very hard for his money and get paid for not answering questions.
Maybe we should quit bailing them out and let the free market decide. It seems to keep deciding that GM should go away, so maybe we should just let it.
The nearest comparison to the KIA Stinger was the RWD Chevrolet SS. But GM just flung the designed for Aussies conservative look SS onto US shores and it of course didnt gain traction.
Another car hamstrung by GM incompetence. And the sad thing is the new Regal is a very nice car and could be a real hit if it was marketed and packaged correctly. I was seriously considering one as my next car but have serious reservations at this point. With Opel going away this car’s future is certainly short and uncertain. I actually looked at a blue Tour X with a sticker of 35860 and it didn’t have rear seat back map pockets or even a rear seat center fold down armrest which also eliminates the cup holders. Also no advanced safety features to be found, no LED headlights, no rear park assist, no XM radio which is restricted to the highest Essence trim level that forces me into leather seating and of course I’m stuck with the ugly black plastic cladding around the wheel wells that I would want deleted.
The way this car is packaged is for sure hurting sales. Why do I need to shell out for the priciest Essence trim level to get simple things like XM radio, a rear seat center armrest/cupholders and map pockets all of which are std equipment on a mid trim level 4 cylinder Chevy Impala LT? Why can’t I order a V6 on the heavier AWD wagon? Why can’t the ugly black plastic be deleted as with the Opel version of this car? Why are cooled seats not even available on the top Essence trim?
This car could be a real contender and nothing short of perfection if anybody else was making it. Such a waste
Why does GM like to suck so much nowadays?
I believe that the Obama Administration had plans to end GM when they forced the cancelation of so many divisions in 2010. The only thing GM makes now that I would buy is the current Vette, not the “new” mid engine. Bought my first Chevy in 1962-used, my first new Pontiac in 1971. My ‘last’ new GM vehicle in 2012. Good Bye old friend. Hello Mr. Ford.
I believe the Obama administration had plans to end everything that America held dear to its heart. Glad it’s over. Hopefully Chevy can get back to a point where it actually makes cars that Americans will buy. Hopefully one day Americans and the American auto industry will wake up and stop chasing Europe and china and go back to being America.
I believe the Obama administration saved GM from it’s own inept management.
In fact that’s not a belief, it’s a reality.
Your solution is going to Ford? Yikes.
The regal is in the premium segment so why are buyers forced to buy the highest most expensive trim for basic premium features. They should call it a Chevy Regal
Widespread availability? I’ve been trying all year to test drive a 2017 GS, closest one is over 100 miles away (and I’m in Miami, not exactly the rural boonies). Closest 2018 GS? Georgia…not one available to test drive in the entire state. I own a 13 Regal GS, love this car, but will not buy another one if the model or even the manufacturer is “doomed.”
Edit: had the model years wrong
The GS couldve been great.
Then they had the idea to throw the 3.6 V6 in it and it all went down the toilet.
Maybe Buick should advertise the Regal GS. No wonder it not selling well. You have a new model and you don’t advertise it. And why make a car with Bembo brakes just on the front?
Maybe GM needs to build a 2dr, rear whl drive that people want to buy. All cars look alike now, if you miss the grill you’ll never know. They, and all other car companies, need to figure out most people don’t want An $800/mo car or truck payment.
The solution to GM’s problem is quite simple,
1.) drop Opel
2.) go to the new platforms, VSS-R, VSS-T & VSS-S
3.) dump all front wheel drive platforms,
4.) bring on people with American ideas for American customers (or Australians)
5.) stop coming up with dumb names for Cadillac and go back to regular Cadillac names (Eldorado=coupe, Escalade= large SUV, Fleetwood Brougham= sedan, Seville = small crossover, Deville= larger crossover) all while giving cadillac all of the Blackwing twin turbo V6 & V8 engines
6.) Move Corvette to Cadillac (mid engine, blackwing V8, AWD, 10-speed DCT and go)
7.) Chevy cars should be Camaro, Malibu, Impala (all on VSS-R platform), (Trailblazer VSS-S platform), Chevy S10, replacing Colorado, S10 Blazer (on the same VSS-T light platform as the S10), Silverado 1500, Silverado HD, Tahoe (including Tahoe Blazer Z71 full size off roader) Yukon (on HD platform) (all on the VSS-T Platform)
8.) Chevy Car engines should be as followed:
a.) 4.3L OHV V6 (revised with a more LT1 type head and cam setup and intake manifold setup along with revised fuel
system and mapping to produce 315hp/320tq
b.) 5.7L OHV V8 (bored out 5.3L, LT1 type camshaft, cylinder heads, intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, induction and
fuel system upgrades designed to produce 425hp/425tq with this engine being the new LT1
c.) 6.6L OHV v8 (6.2L bored out & the return of the L78 with an L78 badge and SS-396 badging on any car fitted with
this engine. As it would be larger than the 6.2L V8, horsepower ratings should be at 495hp/480tq
d.) Current LT5 (755hp supercharged V8 6.2L)
9.) Chevy & GMC truck engines should include the above 4.3L, 5.7L and 6.6L gasoline engine as well as the current duramax engines in the HD trucks.
10.) Chevrolet & GMC transmissions should be the 10-speed auto, a 7-speed manual, a 10-speed allison and a 6-speed allison. Cadillac should be all DCT 10-speeds and all wheel drive for all models
11.) All Cadillac cars should receive blackwing engines only (turbocharged or twin turbocharged 4cylinder, V6 or V8 DOHC engines)
12.) If you want to make Buick a relevant brand, focus your electric pedestrian cars or electric performance cars on this brand.
13.) Fix your biggest mistake and bring back Pontiac as GMC’s car lineup. (biggest mistake GM ever made was dumping Pontiac) Base them off of the Chevy cars, so you will have the Firebird, Grand Prix and Bonneville and let GMC worry about the SUV and truck lineup.
14.) seeing that above 70% of people who buy cars do some form of customizing, the GM accessories and GM performance departments should expand their offerings for upgrades people want to do to their cars. Stereo packages, wheel and tire packages, performance packages, light packages, etc should all be offered through GM as well as individual upgrades and they should be astronomically priced.
Being that i’m a bit of an enthusiast, I really feel that Chevy should really look back at a time that they were selling vehicles and look at what people were doing with them and look at some of the companies that were really associated with them and partner with them, especially for the GM Performance division. Companies like Holley, Flowmaster, Hurst, etc. Think of the attraction that it would bring to the table if GM started offering factory approved upgrades from them. People would have a car line that was personal again, something that they would love again. Not just that empty superficial ” i love my car because its cheap and i don’t have to worry about it” feeling, that “I love my car because it’s mine and it’s special.” While, true Chevrolet also had reliability on it’s side, it also had a deep, resonating sentimental value to its owners. If Chevrolet would really get back to what it was doing when it was winning, people would go back to flocking the GM market.
but, that’s just my thoughts.
They haven’t dropped Regal. I think next Regal would improve lot, as they cancel Lacrosse. That is really funny that GM doesn’t torrow out mid-size sedan despite poor sale.
Regal just needs interior upgrade care drives fine
