2020 Silverado HD Introduces Innovative New BedStep

Two weeks ago, Chevrolet revealed the all-new 2020 Silverado HD. According to Chevy, it is the “most capable and most advanced Silverado HD ever.” The new Silverado HD is instantly recognizable via its bold and aggressive design and enhanced functionality to further differentiate it from the light-duty version. One new feature for the 2020 Silverado HD, which lives at the intersection of design and functionality, is the BedStep.

The BedStep is comprised of a step that is integrated into the side of the bed, immediately rearward of the cab and forward of the rear wheel. The step itself features a textured pad for a sure-footed grip.

The integrated new feature makes it easier to access the bed from the side of the truck, especially useful when pulling a fifth-wheel trailer.

Notably, this feature is not offered on any current pickup truck sold in the United States, though one can make the argument that it is similar in function to step-side pickup designs of yore.

On the 2020 Silverado HD, BedStep joins the CornerStep rear bumper, which offers similar ease-of-access to the truck’s bed from the rear.

The 2020 Silverado HD offers two new powertrains. The first is an all-new gasoline engine with direct injection coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission. Not much is currently known about this combination. There’s also a Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 paired to an all-new Allison 10-speed transmission; this duo makes 910 pound-feet of torque, with other details currently unavailable.

So far, this is all the information we have about the 2020 Silverado HD. The truck will officially debut in February 2019 and go on sale mid-2019.

  1. Anyone else notice the daily red Chevy Blazer story in the top-left corner of the main page? Every single day there is the same red Chevy Blazer story. I am starting to sense a bit of desperation in trying to sell this vehicle that hasn’t even launched yet on the part of GMA. Anyone else think it will be a dud sales-wise, especially with the new Ford Bronco coming and other offerings from competitors that are simply made better?

I wont even consider the new Blazer knowing it is made in Mexico when so many Americans just lost their jobs at GM this year. Why couldn’t the Blazer be made in the U.S. at one of the plants being shutdown? Great way to stab your employees and taxpaying citizens in the back that bailed you out, GM.

  2. Hey didn’t everybody also hear that Ford is not making passenger cars anymore to so that means they are LAYING off people to !!!!!!! But what I really find crazy we already knew about the bed step Being a big Silverado fan I wonder what in the world is going to convince people to buy this truck I really wish they would let Tom PETERS back he was the lead designer of the 2014 Silverado

  3. I really hope the step is optional but I have a feeling it won’t be. While very functional not everyone is going to want it on their truck. There are a ton of guys like myself that prefer a clean / uncluttered look. Between the fender step, wheel well trim and attached forward & rear facing flaps the new HDs are getting a little too plastic happy IMO. The aftermarket can clean up the wheel wells but not sure what to do with the step. And then there’s the mirrors, not sure what to do with those either lol. On a positive note they did FINALLY hide the DEF tank! In all honesty I think the High Country will look good with some proper wheels / tires and aftermarket clean up. Now we just need to convince them to throw the 20 Tahoe / Yukon interior in the LTZ / SLT / High Country & Denali!

  4. 1997 F150 redesign had a driver’s side bed step on fleetside models that folded in with your foot. Passenger side was just a blank cover.

    1. Ford has (still) an optional retractable step in the same location. You kick it and it unfolds. Push it with your foot an it retracts.

  5. Will this step be optional? I put shells on my pickups. so it has no use for me. I would opt for an optional storage cabinet in the same spot with a lockable drawer, would be willing to pay more for that. Would be willing to pay to have the step deleted as well.

How big will the fuel tank be? I always installed replacement tanks from Transflow on my Silverados, but they no longer make a replacement for the new GM trucks. I don’t want a tank in my truck bed or replacing my spare tire holder.

Can we make some of the grab handles optional? Or easily removeable? I don’t like the one on the driver’s A pillar.

    1. I have a 1500 2018 wonder about buying the parts an retrofitting me truck with steps.
I am 5’4″ so a nice upgrade if it will fit clean

  6. GM makes a big deal about steps. The fact is the bumper end step and the new “bed step” are too high. I don’t know what the average age of truck buyers is but I am 63. I would have to step on a milk crate to get my leg up high enough to put my foot in the cup. AMP Research has a better solution.

  7. Never been offered on a truck before? My 21 year old Ford Ranger has one.

  8. Author of the article didn’t do much research!! This isn’t new. Ford has offered a retractable side bed step in front of the rear wheels on both sides for years. Kick it and it releases out. Push in with your foot and it retracts. Simple and effective. This isn’t new or revolutionary!!

  11. Personally, I hope they transfer this idea over to the Colorado. Not all of us need a Semi as a daily driver.. I’m a carpenter by trade and I love my I4 2016 Colorado. Size and efficiency are perfect! I can’t see why the industry thinks people need daily driver Semis and I’m personally happy that Ford came out with a new ranger, which looks like a Colorado anyway.. :-). Competition is always a good thing. No, Ford didn’t stop making cars, they only make the mustang. That’s their own fault after years of convincing people they need f-150 and excursion, now they want to complain and drop the market. Same thing is happening to gm. The thing that really saved gm was the Colorado imho. When you look around at the most commonly used work truck down here in Miami, you see it in this order.. Old rangers, followed by 90’s f-150, then 2016 and up Colorado and canyon, followed by Silverado and new f-150. So keep on going gm, you struck gold with the Colorado, don’t get stupid in the big truck craze.. Ford did that and now they have to play catch-up with the ranger..

  12. This step as like the bumper step will be well appreciated with the high bed walls.

Another factor is the placement on the bed as this is an area that often gets stone blasted. This step will take the beating and can be replaced.

Well thought out over the PITA steps that retract.

  13. That is, by far, the ugliest truck I’ve ever seen! No wonder GM is second to Ford, no innovation! Their V8’s get out run and out pulled by V6’s. The 2019 Silverado looks like a Toyota tundra and Ram mashed together. The front looks like they stretched a Camaro front grill on it. Who cares about a step? They can’t even make a decent truck. Trash, bottom line. Junk!

  14. Looks like the step on a 2004 Colorado ext cab, so it’s not revolutionary. Do your homework and report the facts.

  15. Can’t get past the Fugly front end to even worry about a step. What happened to the running board that swung back that was better then a step inserted into a tinfoil bed side!
