2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD: A Seismic Entry Into The Fray

We were lucky enough to see the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD in person. It dwarfs what we have so far conceived to be an HD truck. It’s so massive, that it made the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 – which has the same hood height as the outgoing Silverado HD – appear as it if were just a Colorado midsize truck. It’s a whole segment, maybe two segments bigger than it was before.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD so massive, that it makes the outgoing Silverado HD look like a dime-a-dozen half-ton. It’s so big that now there’s an assist step (branded “BedStep”) so as to actually be able to physically access things in the box from the side of the truck. It’s so massive that Chevrolet could not physically raise the bed any higher because it then wouldn’t properly accommodate a gooseneck trailer.
Gargantuan. Titanic. Colossal.
What will power the elephantic 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD hood is a choice of two new engines: an all-new gasoline engine with direct injection mated to a six-speed transmission, which we were first to report on last month. While Chevrolet hasn’t made things official on this gasoline V8 engine just yet, it will likely come in at 6.6L in displacement. We’ve reported that the engine has been validated by Navistar as well as GM, since it will likely find itself as the heart of the Class 4,5, and 6 commercial duty 2019 Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500HD trucks that were co-developed with Navistar.
The second engine will be a new Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8, delivering 910 pound-feet of torque through an all-new, Allison 10-speed transmission. Sounds robust.
While no interior shots were provided just yet, expect the interior of the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD to mimic that of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 half-ton. We saw that much in spy photos. This means an additional 3 inches of legroom on crew cab models, and a taller seating position for the retired NFL linemen that will drive them. Pictured is a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab in LT trim, for reference.
Like the 2019 Silverado 1500, the 2020 Silverado HD also will offer new trailering technology, along with significant (yet unspecified) increases in towing and payload capabilities. Chevrolet also talks of “a host” of new technologies and features designed “specifically for heavy-duty truck customers.”
The 2020 Silverado HD will be built at the GM Flint Assembly plant in Flint, Michigan and be available in North American markets, including the United States, Canada and Mexico.
We hope to have more 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD news to share as we get closer to the 2019 Chicago Auto Show in February, where it will likely be on a rotating display next to a mid-engine Corvette.

I like the front end. Good-looking truck
I like it. Good-looking truck
I’d swear that grill looks like it’s upside down and it’s apparent the designers forgot the KISS principle. Sad….
I like it.
10 speed Allison? The only current 10 speed Allison has is the TC10, a massive heavy transmission for class 8 highway stuff.
I’d like to know more about a major mechanical driveline piece before I worry about whether or not I think a grille is ugly.
Looks like it needs a front view camera to be able to see closer than 5 ft out front! The “mine’s bigger than yours” contest between truck owners goes on… between this and the Toyota Avalon, I think we’ve reached peak grille.
So ugly I like it, have that 60s/70s truck ugliness to it..
I for one like the looks.I also like the grill with the Chevrolet lettering as it is different. Good job Chevy, now let’s work on the interior!
1.) i have a feeling there will be different front ends just like there are on the 1500 Silverado.
2.)That thing is HUGE!!! It rivals Godzilla in sheer presence.
Chevy guy said something above that i’m sure most of us agree with when he touched base on style. Right now and this is my honest opinion, as far as looks go
1. Ram Trucks
2. GMC Trucks
3. Toyota Trucks
4. Chevy trucks
5. Nissan Trucks
6. Ford Trucks
Now my basis is (IMO) for the overall truck, not just the exterior. Chevy builds one heck of a truck but the interiors are so boring and not truly up to par. I feel like Chevrolet holds back alot though and doesn’t really do what needs to be done all the way across the board (I actually feel that way about general motors as a whole) but that’s because I hold Chevy to a high standard (the way i slightly feel about Ford) also the way i feel about what Dodge Should be. I grew up around Chevy’s and Fords mostly, ’89 Chevy Mark-3 Van, two ’77 Caprice Classics (1 coupe 1 Sedan), a few 94-96 Impala Super Sports, an S10 blazer Xtreme, two LT1 F-Bodies (Camaro and Trans Am) and an ’85 Monte Carlo SS plus my own personal ’85 Firebird. Not to mention a few Ford’s (my 2 mustangs) a plethora of ’60’s mustang and fox bodies. For me, when I look at Chevy, i feel a loss because Chevy lost alot of what it had. I don’t expect for Chevy to go back to making the old vehicles again, but it would be nice if they could capture alot of what was and bring it to what is. They say people don’t buy coupes and sedans anymore, maybe its because car companies don’t make good coupes and sedans and more (oh and try telling that to the Dodge boys and they’ll laugh at you because Challengers and Chargers are still in demand) America wants American cars again. Not everything has to be a fuel sipping, eco-friendly, rainbow loving, prius topping, tesla chasing, salad eating star bucks approved boring mundane soul draining vehicle. There are alot of us out here who still love tire burning, V8 having, gas guzzling (okay it doesn’t have to get 8mpg but you get the idea), leather jacket jeans and boots wearing, McDonalds drive-Thru, back roads, two lane black top, stop light stare-down, bad@$$ cars. We’re still out here despite what top notch corporate America wants everyone to think. We don’t want front wheel drive Opels (RWD Holden HSV vehicles would be nice though). We want Camaros with 5 different V8 options (4.6 RS, 5.0 Z28, 5.7 SS, 6.6 SS-396, & 7.0 ZL1 and don’t say it’s too much because Dodge has a 3.6L GT, 5.7L R/T, 5.7L T/A, the T/A 392, SRT-392, 392 R/T Scat pack and now the Hellcat, hellcat Redeye and the 1-year only Demon which was never a challenger in the first place) and a 3.8L base v6, we want rear wheel drive Monte Carlos( BMW just came out with a full size 8-series coupe and MB has a S-Class coupe and both sell), rear wheel drive Impala Super Sport (Charger is still going strong), add the K5 Blazer back into the Tahoe lineup as a 2-door4x4 “Trail Boss” variant, good looking silverados (admittedly i kinda like the current silverado, still kinda wish for a ZR2, an SS, and a Cheyenne luxury performance model like what the F150 Harley davidson edition was to Ford, and a 2-tone Silverado Classic-10) the S10 pickup and S10 blazer (Change the Colorado name, make it look more like a silverado but smaller) and the Trailblazer SS (Durango SRT-392, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT and Jeep Trackhawk, plus the Range Rover lineup and New Maserati Levante Trofeo). Get rid of Buick and Bring Holden up here under the GMC umbrella as The GMC car lineup, give us the Monaro, the Commodore, the Club Sport and the Maloo as the Car lineup, Take the give the Canyon a 3.6L twin turbo option and name it the Syclone, make the Acadia a rear wheel drive based AWD SUV and give it a twin turbo 3.6L option and Call it the Typhoon, Give us a GMC Hummer (complete with Denali) and lastly a Yukon GT. Cadillac should adopt the corvette and give it an ultra high performance hybrid blackwing motor and turn it loose on Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti and the rest of them. I’m sorry but Cadillac needs to go back to its old names such as Fleetwood brougham, Eldorado and Seville along with the Escalade. All that other crap is unnecessary and dumb. People are so upset about the fate of the CT6. People don’t even realize that CT stood for Catera Touring hence the CTS (Catera Touring Sedan) and the Catera was a midsize vehicle. Also the fact that the CT6 stood on a platform by itself which is no longer relevant no matter how good it was. Caddy needs 3 cars the Eldorado coupe, the Seville midsize sedan and the Fleetwood brougham full size sedan. While obvious it would share the new VSS-R platform with the rest of GM’s new lineup, they would all differ from anything else GM has in the drivetrain with DOHC twin turbo V8 engines and DCT 10-speed transmissions and AWD. The Escalade would be the same as it will share the VSS-T platform but a different drivetrain, suspension and setup to better match vehicles like the Mercedes Benz G-Glass and other large European SUV competitors. Obviously with Cadillac being on the level with luxury competitors from Europe, it needs other SUVs and Crossovers as well. Just remember though, most of them are rear-wheel drive based vehicles. Of course a lot of this is just my opinion but being a fan of American vehicles, (Chevy, Ford and Dodge) I figured I’d throw my 2-cents in.
I really like the way it looks. One question I have is why the emphasis on the 4 door, will there be a 2 door HD work oriented version?
OMG I DIDN’T BELIEVE THIS WAS TRUE UNTIL I LOOK AT THE WEBSITE I WONDER WHY ITS HAS TO BE THE TRUCK THAT I LOVE SO MUCH HAVING people going THROUGH A MID LIFE CRISIS DESIGN IT
Wow . . . these 1978-ish Headlamps really have to go! I can see them for the WT version only, but not anything else. Guess this just adds to the GM Disappointing News this past week. What is going on at GM?!? (smdgh) Not only have we built up anticipation all year with these hidden design panels, etc. but to have a fugly HD truck design is really not inspiring. The morale must be really low at GM for them to do this. Get some ADRENALINE into these designs. This is more like an episode of “Married At First Sight” -or- “90-Day Fiance” with an unpleasant ending . . . perhaps I’m being too critical, but perhaps not.
It looks good, but could look better!

What do you think?
I think I like your version but still not quite sold on lighter one.
I bet this truck will look better live ,,, this is a real man truck ,,this will be my next pickup :))
I see on Facebook the front is being compared to the North American Family Truckster from the Vacation movie.
F’ugly front end. You’ll need a 16 foot ladder to wash it. Where does the pricing begin? $60K? Trucks have become absolutely ridiculous, on so many levels. Do the yuppies that can afford these types of rigs really need 910 lb-ft of torque to haul 10 bags of mulch from the Home Depot?
Do the Hollywood actors/musician/sports athlets need 700+ horsepower just to sit in traffic?
This has been a difficult few months for GM fans. It seems like there’s one self inflicted wound after another. A weak interior in GM’s most important vehicle – full size trucks, poorly communicated downsizing plans, poorly communicated future vehicle plans and now an ugly mug on their new heavy duty truck. It’s a damn shame that GM sweats the details on other aspects of their trucks like suspensions, powertrains but fails in the areas that people see first – the front end and the dashboard. Whoever is responsible for this needs to be demoted or worse. Come on GM, give us something to be proud of!
Guess someone forgot to tell them it’s the whole package that make or break you. In this competitive market you need to sweat the detail inside and out, capability and performance, safety and quality, value and desirability. In other words you need to be the best across the board to maintain your current fans and gain new fans. That way you sell more vehicles, make more money and lay off less people.
Such an ugly front end. How could GM release such a design? You would think they solicited truck buyers input on the design yet I have hardly seen a positive comment yet on the web. Really missed the mark. Pontiac Aztec take 2.
Should be popular with the millennials then!

Point being, a lot of people gripped that GM’s trucks didn’t look tough enough. So now they make
them tough-looking and people complain!
