These 15 Upgrades Turn The Colorado ZR2 Into An Off-Road Race Truck

The Chevy Colorado ZR2 is one of the most exciting pickup trucks on the market today. It’s off-road-ready without being impractical. You don’t have to compromise on comfort or features with the ZR2. To help owners personalize their pickups, Chevrolet Performance developed 15 new systems designed to increase the ZR2’s off-road capability. Many of the parts fit both diesel- and gas-powered trucks; however, there are a few regulated to just the gas-powered model.

Chevy designed the parts in collaboration with Multimatic and Hall Racing.  Renowned off-road driver Chad Hall competed in a Colorado ZR2 equipped with these components to validate them in desert racing conditions. So while the Colorado ZR2 Bison will handle almost any off-road trail, these off-road racing parts can transform a standard ZR2 into a bona fide pre-runner.

If you want to take your ZR2 to the next level, then take a look at these 15 new upgrades. The parts go on sale between now and early 2019.

1. Colorado ZR2 1.5-inch Body Lift System – $937.50

The new lift system adds 1.5 inches of ground clearance to the already two-inch additional ground clearance added to the ZR2 over a standard Colorado. The system is only available on gas-powered ZR2s.

2. Colorado ZR2 Front Lift Kit w/High Angle Upper Control Arm Ball Joint System – $562.50

This system increases front lift by 1.25 inches, allowing for higher ground clearance, a leveled stance, and a steeper approach angle.

3. Colorado ZR2 High Angle Upper Control Arm Ball Joint System – $TBD

This enables greater upper ball joint articulation, which translates into increased front suspension travel.

4. Colorado ZR2 Front Long Travel DSSV Shocks – $4,187.50

The shocks increase suspension travel by 15 percent on all 2017 or newer Colorado ZR2 pickup trucks. The High Angle Upper Control Arm Ball Joint System is required.

5. Colorado ZR2 Rear Long Travel DSSV Shocks – $4,000.00

Adding these long travel Multimatic DSSV shocks to the rear of the truck increased suspension travel by 10 percent. The Long Travel Leaf Spring System is required.

6. Colorado ZR2 Long Travel Leaf Spring System – $3,312.50

This system replaces the stock ZR2 dual rate spring, relocating the rear axle. The system increases ride height by approximately 30 millimeters. Overall suspension travel is increased up to 11 inches when paired with the Long Travel DSSV Shocks.

7. Colorado ZR2 Anti-Wrap Link System – $1,218.75

The anti-wrap system helps prevent axle wrap under acceleration and braking, which improves suspicion control in extreme off-road conditions. The upgraded rear differential cover and Long Travel Rear Leaf Spring System is required. This is only available on gas-powered ZR2s.

8. Colorado ZR2 Jounce Striker/Leaf Spring Mount System – $2,062.50

This is designed to work with the Rear Jounce Shock System while maximizing the performance of the Long Travel Leaf System. It works by reducing the clamp length of the leaf spring pack, reducing stress while increasing performance.

9. Colorado ZR2 Cross Car Beam System – $575.00

The Cross Car Beam, only available on gas-powered ZR2s, helps counteract loads from the Rear Jounce Shock System.

10. Colorado ZR2 Front Jounce Shock System – $1,231.25

This is a secondary suspension bump shock, enhancing gross vehicle motion control, increased suspension bump capacity, and provides bottoming protection in extreme off-road conditions.

11. Colorado ZR2 Rear Jounce Shock System – $1,543.75

This is a secondary suspension bump shock, enhancing gross vehicle motion control, increased suspension bump capacity, and provides bottoming protection in extreme off-road conditions.

12. Colorado ZR2 Tie Rod Sleeve System – $237.50

This helps increase buckling strength for off-road, severe duty, and race conditions without replacing stock tie rods.

13. Colorado ZR2 Rear Differential Cover – $687.50

This is an aluminum cover that provides a mounting platform for the Anti-Wrap Bar System. It features a unique Chevrolet Performance logo plate.

14. Colorado ZR2 Steel Driveshaft – $518.75

The 3.5-inch diameter steel driveshafts offers superiors resistance to impact damage during off-road conditions while helping increase clearance over obstacles. It has a max driveshaft speed of 5,000 rpm.

15. Colorado ZR2 Ball Spline Half Shafts – $TBD

These allow for larger joint angles over standard ZR2 half shafts, which help reduce feedback forces through the steering system during off-road events and hard cornering.

  1. Wondering how much saving you could if they offered all of this in a package. Could they make it competitive with the Raptor performance and price wise. With these parts offered individually the final price point is way above the raptor and you have a smaller vehicle. That’s just the purchase price and don’t include instillation.

  2. I have a diesel zr2. I understand why body lift is not offered to diesel due to clutch fan versus the electric fan and probably other reasons that I have no knowledge of since I haven’t attempted but it does suck they don’t offer something… Also why offer everything but not some things like the body lift and anti-wrap link… You would think if someone committed to buy all these parts that the anti-wrap link will be crucial even for the diesel version of the zr2. Or are they saying it is not needed for diesel or is it cause the stupid def system is in the way like always!!

  3. I think the Wrap is missing due to the exhaust.

I put a sway bar on and it was tight with the gas exhaust.

  4. Lots of money to spend on the suspension…what about engine performance? End result will be disapointing….just buy a Raptor IMO

    1. Typical reply. Mine is bigger than yours. Apples and oranges. I’ve been places with my ZR2 a Raptor couldn’t imagine. Size does matter. Lol

  5. Body lift cannot net the vehicle any ground clearance. By definition, you are raising the body where as the frame and tires stay in the same place.

    1. Very good Eric. But lifting the body allows for more room so you can use larger diameter tires. Those larger tires increases the truck’s ground clearance.

  6. That is true Eric that a body lift alone will not give ground clearance but a body lift allows for bigger tires which then nets you clearance… Unfortunately to take advantage of these new components from Chevy Performance your limited to body lift with bigger tires to get the extra clearance for the under belly of the truck. I do think these new spring and shock and control arm components will give some lift but that is assumption. I would like to know if someone knows better and know if that is true.

The truck in this video has all of the parts shown in this article. Tom Gierman is the performance engineer for the ZR2 and leads them around the truck and explains the advantages that the parts offer. Their truck has a 1.5″ body lift and a slight additional lift provided by the suspension mods. The truck runs 34-inch LT305/70R17 tires.

  7. I feel like GM has taken a step backwards. The H3 and H3T Hummer will fit 35 inches tires on the factory ride height. In my opinion, GM doesn’t understand or doesn’t care what off-road really means. I was hoping for successor to the H3, but I’m not seeing it. With a budget boost on a new Wrangler you can fit 37 inch tires. Jeep will soon have a the gladiator on the market and start destroying but these vehicles are. The only reason I can think of to buy this truck is if you hate Jeep and Toyota.

  8. The big joke here is the 7300 class is supposed to be their bone stock Mini / mid sized trucks / suv’s , Chevy cheated by building all of those expensive hop up parts thereby creating a full race truck that nobody but Chevy or ford Raptor can compete with. This truck class is limited to a V6 , with no more than
250 Hp , and no turbos , Somebody please ask Josh hall how much horse power his truck has . Chevy and Ford basically wanted their own class , so the older vehicles were not able to compete , when Ford opened up a so called Full Stock class [ 4100] back in the late 90’s early 2000’s , the new fords got their clocks wiped by the older models , so Ford had to shut it down and come up with the Raptor so they could make their own class , Chevy the same with their Non stock that you see Hall racing in the stock 7300 class . Big money will always find a way to cheat.
