The 2019 Silverado offers various convenience features that make it easier to live, work, and play, including push-button start, improved CornerStep rear bumper, push-button parking brake, a power tailgate, and power assist steps. Of all these features, the power steps are the only feature that was around for the last-generation K2 Silverado. Read on for a all the details about the power running boards as well as their availability.

How It Works
Assigned GM RPO code BRS and often described as “rearward articulating” (we’ll explain why in just a minute), the power steps on Chevy’s 2019 Silverado have three functions and positions:
- When not in use, the steps retract under the pickup truck for a clean look that, in some cases, helps the 2019 Silverado be more aerodynamic when compared to trucks with fixed running boards.
- When any of the truck’s doors are opened, the steps automatically deploy outward, allowing for more convenient ingress into and egress from the cab for the driver and passengers.
- When one needs to access the cargo box from the side of the truck, a tap of the foot on the rear-most part of the step brings the entire running board toward the rear wheel, earning its “rearward articulating” moniker.
In all, the power assist steps on the 2019 Silverado make it easier to exit and enter the truck as well as to access the bed from the side. When not in use, the retractable steps sit (almost) flush with the truck, delivering a clean look that, in some cases, may improve the truck’s aerodynamic properties.
Though no videos exist of these steps just yet on the 2019 Silverado, we did find this video published by a Chevrolet dealership back in 2016 that shows the functionality of the steps on the last-generation 2017 Silverado High Country (the last-generation model on the K2 platform).
Availability
On the 2019 Silverado, the articulating power assist steps are available on LTZ and High Country models.
For LTZ models, the steps are only available for Crew Cab models equipped with the Safety Package (PQB), and are not available on or in conjunction with the following:
- Models coated in the Oakwood Metallic color
- Models equipped with chrome assist steps (BVT)
- Models with Off-Road Appearance Package (PDP)
- Models with Assist Step and Tonneau Package (PDR)
- Any models equipped with LPO assist steps
For High Country models, the articulating power steps are not available or or in conjunction with the following:
- Models coated in the Oakwood Metallic color
- Models equipped with chrome assist steps (BVT)

While details of five powertrain combos have already been revealed, GM has not yet shared details of the new inline-six 3.0L Duramax Diesel engine, only stating that it will be "best-performing" and that it will be mated to GM's new 10-speed transmission. Notably, the outgoing, Chevy will continue manufacturing and selling the outgoing, K2 generation Silverado alongside the all-new model for a limited amount of time in limited configurations. Having overhauled the Silverado 1500, Chevy will next overhaul the Silverado Heavy Duty. The brand released a teaser image of the upcoming all-new 2020 Silverado HD in April 2018 and announced the vehicle in November 2018. The truck will launch in the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model. The 2020 Silverado HD will be comprised of the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD that ride on a more robust and capable version of the new T1 platform when compared to the 2019 Silverado 1500, while sharing many high-tech features and design elements with its light duty brother. I would still prefer the wide running boards that stay in place. Along with the huge dealer installed rubber mud flaps, nothing has a chance of even getting close to hitting the bottom of the cab or doors.

K2 Silvy still looks better. Here’s how to fix it. They got the wheel well shapes right on the new Sierra and they need to go on the Chevy too, an evolutionary progression of GM’s square wheel wells, angular, muscular. The ones on the 2019 Silverado look like everyone else’s and aren’t in sync with the rest of the truck.
At no point do these running boards move downward. They simply swing out. And swing further to reach back.
