2020 Silverado HD Work Truck Spied Testing With Less Camo

The 2020 Silverado HD is coming. Previously, we showed you all kinds of spy photos of the upcoming full-size, heavy duty truck, told you that it will introduce a new flow-through grille, an all-new gasoline V8 engine, and even pointed out the presence of an integrated side step on some models. And today, we have new photos of the 2020 Silverado HD Work Truck.

Caught while undergoing standard-issue towing and unladen shake-down tests on Michigan highways, the model seen here is the 2020 Silverado 2500HD WT – the bare-bones, budget-minded workhorse that delivers no-frills, stripped-down functionality and capability – in Crew Cab form.

Up front, we see a new set of mirrors and a new grille design that is similar to that of the 2019 Silverado 1500 Work Truck, with “CHEVROLET” written across the grille’s crossbar, exactly like Chevy teased earlier this year. Pay no mind to the oval on the upper part of the upper part of the grille, as it is fake.

Elements that give the Work Truck its bare-bones characteristics include black trim on the front and rear bumpers and a set of incandescent (non-LED) headlights. Additionally, the entire ensemble rides on a set of simple steel wheels.

Inside, expect the 2020 Silverado HD Work Truck to feature a cloth interior, a front bench seat, and the base 7-inch touchscreen on the center stack.

The 2020 Silverado HD will be offered with an all-new gasoline engine and the current 6.6L Duramax L5P Diesel engine. The transmission situation is currently unknown, but we expect that the current GM 6-speed automatic for the gas motor as well as the 6-speed Allison 1000 for the diesel engine will be updated.

We expect the 2020 Silverado HD range to follow in the footsteps of its less capable, light duty brother and expand the lineup to include more models and variants, such as potential Custom and Trail Boss models.

The next-gen Silverado HD will launch in the second or third quarters of the 2019 calendar launch as a 2020 model year vehicle. It will be assembled at the following GM plants:

  1. The very big question is, will GM use the new design V8 DOHC engines, that are used in the 2019 Cadillac CT6-V, but with more cubes? The CT6-V uses a very small 4.2 liter V8 version, but with twin turbos for huge 500 and 550 HP. The Cadillac DPI-V.R race cars used in the IMSA Prototype class for 2018, use a non-turbo 5.5 liter DOHC 4 valve version of the same new design. To get enough torque to beat the Dodge Ram hemi with 6.4 liters, it will have to be bigger, such as 6.6 to 6.8 liters, to give about 440 pounds feet of torque at a lower RPM. With the 8 speed auto trans, the max torque should be at about 2500 to 2800 RPM, for the best puling power and fuel mileage. The rumours of a 6.2 liter version of the new design DOHC engine to be used in the high end Suburban and Escalades, are flying around. Ford Expedition and Lincoln is using a twin turbo V6 to get 470 to over 520 lbs feet of torque for these heavy trucks means that anyone wanting to tow, will bypass a low torque engine that Chevy now uses with only 380 lbs feet in the 6 liter 2500 and 3500 series trucks. A smaller V8 with twin turbos would give over 550 lbs feet of truck low RPM torque if the engine was in the 5.5 to 6 liter range. GM could build 3 different versions of the same bigger cube engine, just change the cams and add a turbo to the two higher HP versions. GM needs to step up with an optional turbo V8 for the those wanting to tow or just haul a$$.

    1. We reported on the new 6.6L gasoline engine destined for the HDs here:

      http://gmauthority.com/blog/2018/10/next-gen-gm-hd-trucks-to-introduce-new-6-6l-v-8-gasoline-engine/

It will not be a DOHC, but a larger and improved Gen 5 Small Block.

The Escalade will be the only full-size T1 program to get the new Blackwing DOHC. Everything else (Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon) will use a Small Block V8.

Keep in mind the complete package when it comes to these HD trucks. I would look in the direction of weight before looking at more power.

An optional turbo V8 exists. It’s called the Duramax!

    2. Most people use these trucks for work and they want reliability.

I’m sure that if our 2001 and 1996 had had a forced induction engine, a 10 in screen or a 12 speed trans they would not be running as strong as they are now with hardly an problems.

Bare bones cheap, and dead a$$ reliable take the cake in this class. I’m all for the top lever Denali getting maybe a supercharged V8 with an 8-spd, but not the WT Chevy.

      1. Those things might come with time. Turbo and 10 speeds might add complexity but doesn’t necessarily reduce reliability if done right.

Things change; for example the old way of thinking was that turbo engines are peaky, but anyone who has driven Ford’s 3.5 EB will have to admit it makes GM’s 5.3 feel limp wristed in comparison in all areas of the power band, including and especially the low end.

  2. That’s rear shocks mounts.

  3. That’s a Ford, not a Chevy.

    1. mmm nope. there are a lot of indicators that it’s a GM truck. But the easy ones that aren’t camo covered are the mirrors. Side mirror door mounting is all GM. AND same with the rear view mirror, that’s Silverado not Ford – its more isosceles and less rectangular.. actually the trailer wiring hook ups are GM. the air dams infront of the rear tires, GM.

  4. I love that they kept the actual Chevy emblem instead of the new CHEVORLET across the from grille.

Not liking the idea of a 7 in touchscreen in a base WT. when it comes to reliability and durability, that doesn’t make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

(most) Fleet buyers/contractors want the cheapest, and more durable thing in a truck; and a 7 in screen is neither of those.

  5. Do we really think there will be a Trail Boss version? I’m all for it but GM putting a lift kit on an HD seems a stretch…

  6. Looks like a new/updated rear differential and I’m excited to see the new 6.6 Pushrod Gas V8 !

  7. “It will be assembled at the following GM plants: GM Flint Assembly in Flint, Michigan, USA, GM Fort Wayne Assembly in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA”…going forward ALL variations and models of the GM HD trucks will be built in Flint.

  8. The Reverse Light pattern seems to mimic the Sierra and Ford Super Duty design based on it’s location, hopefully I’m wrong about that once the actual reveal takes place.

  9. I can’t wait for General Motors to integrate the drivetrain from the Chevy Volt into the Silverado which translates to a 350 hp electric motor with a 100 mile battery and a 1.5L DOHC-4v 4-cyl gas motor to recharge the battery when necessary; the first step towards electrification of the Silverado in 2025 when the ZEV truck will be ship to countries where ZEV is mandatory.
