2019 Silverado 1500: First Images Of 3.0L Duramax Diesel Found On Chevrolet Site

In case you were ever wondering what the new 3.0L LM2 Duramax I-6 diesel engine looks like outside of the engine bay of a 2019 Silverado 1500, well, wonder no longer. Above is an official image cropped from the official Chevrolet website, where potential customers can now configure and price out the 2019 Silverado 1500 to their heart’s content.

The 3.0L LM2 Duramax will be available on only mid- to high-trim level 2019 Silverado 1500 pickups, starting with the Silverado LT, which comes standard with an also all-new 2.7L turbocharged L3B four cylinder engine. A 5.3L V8 is also available on the Silverado LT. The same engine hierarchy is found in the 2019 Silverado 1500 RST, while LTZ and High Country Trim Levels begin with the 5.3L L84 with Dynamic Fuel Management, while also offering the more powerful 6.2L L87 V8 with DFM alongside the optional 3.0L Duramax diesel. All 3.0L Duramax configurations will be paired with a new 10-speed automatic transmission. All of the same mechanical combinations apply to the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500, as well.

Chevrolet anticipates that this all-new I-6 diesel engine will be the most capable and fuel efficient engine offering in the entire 2019 Silverado 1500 lineup. It’s unclear if this engine will find itself in other applications, such as the upcoming 2020 Silverado Heavy Duty, or vehicles like next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe, which is expected to be on the same T1 platform. It’s expected that the LM2 will produce 282 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

About Chevrolet Silverado

The Chevrolet Silverado is a lineup of full-size pickup trucks sold primarily in North America, but also in the Middle East and in certain markets in South America. Slotting above the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado (known as the S10 in some markets), the Silverado is Chevrolet’s largest pickup truck and currently consists of the 1500 light duty model, two Heavy Duty models – the 2500HD and 3500HD, as well as Conventional Class 4, Class 5 and Class 6 Medium Duty models – the Silverado 4500HD and Silverado 5500HD and Silverado 6500HD.

The 2018 Chevy Silverado represents the fifth model year of the third-generation Silverado. It is based on the GM K2 platform shared with other full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from GM. Though the line sold relatively well, it became less competitive in the marketplace with time when compared to its primary Ford F-Series rival, due to lacking cutting-edge features such as turbocharged engines, a rugged off-road variant such as the Ford F-150 Raptor, a diesel engine option in the light duty (1500) model, and also various modern features and equipment.

Luckily, an all-new Silverado arrived for the 2019 model year that addresses many of the issues of its predecessor model. Customers began taking delivery of the all-new truck in the second half of August 2018.

Chevrolet says that the all-new 2019 Silverado is the result of over 7,000 customer interviews – the most intensive research in its history. The new model uses higher grade alloy steel in the bed floor as well as various mixed materials that result in a reduction in weight and improved performance, with weight falling about 450 pounds. The truck also offers an expanded amount of models for a total of eight, including the new 2019 Silverado Trailboss.

Riding on GM’s new T1 platform shared with other future GM full-size trucks and SUVs, the 2019 Silverado offers more technology, convenience features, and engine/transmission combinations. While details of five powertrain combos have already been revealed, GM has not yet shared details of the new inline-six 3.0L Duramax Diesel engine, only stating that it will be “best-performing” and that it will be mated to GM’s new 10-speed transmission.

Notably, the outgoing, Chevy will continue manufacturing and selling the outgoing, K2 generation Silverado alongside the all-new model for a limited amount of time in limited configurations.

Having overhauled the Silverado 1500, Chevy will next overhaul the Silverado Heavy Duty. The brand released a teaser image of the upcoming all-new 2020 Silverado HD in April 2018. The truck will be revealed and launched in the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model year vehicle. The model family will be comprised of the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD models, ride on a more capable version of the new T1 platform, share many technologies and design elements with the 2019 Silverado 1500, while being more robust and capable.

The 2019 Silverado Medium Duty series, comprised of the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD, completes the overhauled Silverado family.

  1. All this new stuff, we really don’t need, just to convince buyers to keep paying BIG prices.

  2. I went and looked into buying a new Chevrolet truck last weekend, but a stripped down version for 48k,well let’s just say,I see a nice little restoration project that’s getting ready to happen.. overpriced as hell for a plain Jane truck..NOOOOO thank you!

  3. You could get the old 6.2 diesel in a half ton back in the ’80’s, so this may be the first half ton Silverado with a diesel but not the first half ton Chevy pickup with a diesel. They sure have improved them since that 6.2 but there’s a lot of them still out there.
John Eubanks- I agree 100%!! Went to a huge dealer in Tennessee this weekend and saw a RST thru High Country. Nothing was under $50,000!!! And I still can’t accept the exterior styling and the option of just black or “very dark atmosphere” WTF??? Go up on price but take away choice? Remote start is an option on most trims now? Can’t get the great engines in the “affordable” trims ??

  4. What GM does not advertise is that, like the Colorado, they will likely offer the diesel in Base and Work Truck trims, just only to fleet buyers. When I went to buy my Colorado, the dealer had a couple Work Truck trim diesels on the lot because they have a “Commercial” side to their dealership. I didn’t believe it at first, but sure enough, White paint, no rear seat, vinyl floors, steel wheels, and the 2.8L Duramax! Now, if only they would offer that to the public like ram does for the EcoDiesel in all trims…

Case in point for the Colorado, not an ultra base but still a Work Truck trim with some goodies. You will never see these advertised as being available in any brochure, etc. Most dealers will tell you LT, Z71 or ZR2 only:

  5. SAD to the bone! We own a 2016, silverado (WT) ,white ext.,black bumpers ,full crew cab, 4.3V6-6spd .auto. still paid 30,000.00 plus for it in June 2016! We other wise LOVE this truck! The total MPG with 27,568 miles is 26.58 for all those miles! We still own our 1978 F-100 short wide 300-inline 6, 326,000 miles ,avg mpg is 24.64 for all those miles, oh it has the 4spd OD standard trans with ,3.00-9inch third member.———– we hope the members of GM who have the power–no–the FIDUCIARY mentality remembers all working baby boomers ,who lived through Vietnam, water-gate, oil embargo the 70’s and all the other brainless decisions made by polished liars (politicians, ceo, cfo, boards, regents and all others who the shoe fits) in the last 50 years. Thanks for the LM2 I-6 3.0L ,just be FIDUCIARY give us working people an opportunity !

  6. I think GM keeps missing the mark with diesel available trim levels. Most diesel buyers are either full load or stripped out kind of people. I think a base trim level 1500 with a diesel option would sell really well. I know, I know, the profit margin wouldn’t be $20,000. Maybe they are worried that if a lower trim was available it would eat into the higher trim levels. Honestly, someone who is looking at a $35000 truck wasn’t considering a $70000 truck anyway.

  7. Interesting positioning of the alternator, being quite low down the engine. Would think this would reduce the vehicle water depth wading capability ….

  8. Hmmm, I wonder how much a complete (oil pan to air filter) LM2 motor + the ECM,etc, will run? Or, if Cummins re-power will make something similar (in size & power) to compete with it for the 1/2 ton market.
