The next-gen full-size GM SUVs will feature “exceptional attention to detail” from a design standpoint, sources familiar with the future GM product plans have told us.
Specifically, we were told that the next-gen Chevy Tahoe/Suburban, GMC Yukon and Cadillac Escalade will feature front and rear lighting executions along with exhaust treatments that are bound to surprise even the most discerning buyers. We were also told that the vehicles will be significantly more differentiated than all prior generations of the nameplates.
For instance, at least one trim/model of the future Chevy Tahoe will feature quad exhaust with dual tips on each side of the vehicle, while the future Caddy Escalade will have different exhaust configuration (depending on trim level) that are intricately integrated into the rear fascia.
We imagine that the bit about the Escalade trims is related to the recent introduction of Cadillac’s Y trim level strategy, which differentiates trims of the same model with various exterior and interior trims, along with features. For instance, Luxury/Premium Luxury models feature bright body elements, while Sport models finish those elements in either body color or shiny black.
The next generations of full-size GM SUVs is widely expected for the 2020 model year, meaning that unveilings should begin to take place within the next six months. We previously reported that the Escalade will see the biggest change by becoming $10,000 more expensive. The model will also be the first Escalade to be completely developed under the supervision of Cadillac designers and engineers as the brand became a semi-autonomous operating unit within GM.
All three of the future full-size GM SUVs will ride on the new GM T1 platform shared with the 2019 Silverado and 2019 Sierra. Spy shots have previously shown a 2020 Suburban prototype testing with an Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) configuration in order to deliver improved ride and handling properties.
