Competitive Sales Comparison

The Tahoe remained the single best-selling model in its segment during the quarter, accounting for just over 30 percent of its entire segment. In doing so, the Tahoe outsold all other rivals, including its corporate cousin, the GMC Yukon family (see running GMC Yukon sales), as well as its extended-length brother, the Chevy Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales).

The closest non-GM model was the Ford Expedition, which the Tahoe outsold with room to spare (see running Ford Expedition sales). Notably, Expedition sales figures include the Expedition and the extended-length Expedition L, which is the equivalent of combining sales of the Tahoe and Suburban. The Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia brought up the last two places in the segment.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment expanded 16 percent in Q2 2018 and 7 percent in the first half of 2018.

The GM Authority Take

The Tahoe’s sales performance in the second quarter of 2018 continued to impress, as the full-size SUV not only remained the undisputed leader in its segment from the standpoint of sales volume, but also posted very healthy volume growth compared to the second quarter of 2017.

Impressively, GM continued to dominate the full-size SUV segment during the quarter, accounting for 61,536 sales – or over 70 percent of the segment. It also doesn’t appear that Ford’s all-new Expedition is impacting Tahoe sales, despite the Expedition being an all-new product that Ford insists is in such high demand, that units are flying off dealer lots.

Going forward, we expect Tahoe sales to continue growing as a result of the ongoing shift in consumer market dynamics to CUVs and SUVs. Deliveries will be aided even further by healthy demand at the retail level as well as established fleet sales throughout. An all-new, significantly-improved model is expected within the next 18 months, and should only help the Tahoe maintain its lead.

The Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV). It is currently Chevrolet’s second-biggest SUV, slotting under the extended-length full-size Chevrolet Suburban.

The current model was introduced for the 2015 model year and represents the fourth generation of the Tahoe nameplate. The 2018 Chevy Tahoe represents the fourth model year of the fourth-generation Tahoe. The 2019 Chevy Tahoe represents the fifth model year of the fourth-generation Tahoe, and offers up a new exterior color, a new Premier badge on the tailgate, and new color availability for the Tahoe RST as well as the rear-closeout feature. In addition, a new Premier Plus model is introduced and includes the 6.2L V8 L86 engine, 10-speed automatic transmission and several premium-level touches.

  3. Being a new owner of a 2018-Tahoe Z71 Mid-night edition; what an impressive vehicle. Having a towing capacity of 8,600lbs, plenty of Torque and HP from the 5.3 V8 and very comfortable to drive with a 7 passenger capacity, braking is fair. The MPG is actually pretty good averaging 20 MPG with fuel management. One negative, wish the back cargo space when all seats are up, would be about 5 inches deeper. Yes, could have gotten a Surburban, but did not want that big of a vehicle, Tahoe parks well. Not surprised that the Tahoe is the industry leader in this segment. Looks good, drives well, tows well, plenty of passenger room, price tag ok but can get pricey. Z71 Version MSRP of $67K.
