The GM Authority Take
Chevy Spark sales continued their sharp upward climb in the second quarter in both the U.S. and Canada. We attribute the impressive increase to a combination of the following factors:
- Increase in fleet sales
- Increase in interesting in the new, crossover-like Spark Activ model
- Healthy incentives in the U.S. and Canada
- Potential cannibalization of the Spark’s larger and more expensive relative, the Chevy Sonic, whose sales have slid significantly over the past few months, causing rumors of its impending discontinuation
Sales in Mexico decreased as a result of GM’s increased focus on the previous-generation Spark, called the Beat in Mexico. The Beat recently received a refresh for the Mexico market and is also available as a five-door hatch as well as the new(ish) notchback/sedan model.
Sales in South Korea continue to slide as a result of decreased consumer confidence in Chevrolet/GM following the automaker’s very public and negatively-perceived restructuring efforts in the market, which took place in the first several months of the year. The brand has yet to make up ground in the battle for improved public perception following the negotiations with the government and labor union that resulted in the closure of one manufacturing facility – the GM Gunsan plant.
About Chevrolet Spark
The Chevrolet Spark is a mini car (A segment) sold as a five-door hatchback in North America. A sedan variant was planned for the Indian market, where it was to be called the Chevrolet Essentia, but the vehicle never made it to production. The Spark slots beneath the Chevrolet Sonic as the most affordable Chevrolet vehicle.
The first-generation Spark ran from the 2010-2015 model years and was based on the Gamma 2 platform. The second-generation model was introduced for the 2016 model year and was based on the same platform. The architecture is also used by the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo, Chevrolet Trax as well as the Buick Encore.
The Spark received several updates and changes for the 2017 model year, one of which was the addition of the Spark Activ equipment group that gives the city car a slightly more rugged, crossover-like appearance along with a somewhat higher ride height. For the 2018 model year, the Spark sees only one change but the 2019 model year brings about a midcycle refresh with updated exterior and interior.
The Spark plays an important role in the Chevrolet lineup, since it attracts customers at a lower price point than the Sonic, thereby bringing in new customers to the Chevrolet brand. The model also plays an important role in various developing markets such as the Central and South America, the Caribbean, and India (prior to the withdrawal of Chevrolet from India market). The vehicle is also sold in Europe as the Opel Karl and Vauxhall Viva, though GM divested of Opel and Vauxhall.
The Chevrolet Spark is assembled at the following plants:
- GM Changwon plant in Changwon, Gyeongsangnam-do operated by GM Korea (assembles Chevrolet Spark and Holden Spark)
- GM Asaka City plant in Asaka City, Japan
- GM Hanoi plant in Vietnam
- GM Talegaon plant in India
- GM Bogota plant in Colombia (M300 model, known as the first-generation Spark in the U.S.)
