The GM Authority Take
We attribute the Silverado’s stellar Q2 2018 sales performance to the following factors:
- A wide availability of last-generation, K2-based Silverados as a result of a strategy to build as many of the units as possible
- Aggressive sales tactics by GM/Chevrolet to move inventory units at the retail level
- An increase in fleet and commercial deliveries
The results also dispel the theory that unveiling the next-generation 2019 Silverado 1500 would put a damper on sales of the current model.
About Chevrolet Silverado
The Chevrolet Silverado is a lineup of full-size pickup trucks sold primarily in North America but also the Middle East and in certain markets in South America. Slotting above the mid-size Chevrolet Colorado, it is Chevrolet’s largest pickup truck and consists of the 1500 light duty model and two Heavy Duty models – the 2500HD and 3500HD. The family will soon expand with the addition of the Conventional Class 4 and Class 5 Medium Duty trucks – the Silverado 4500 and Silverado 5500. The vehicles will be significantly larger than the Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 variants and ride on a completely different chassis co-developed with Navistar.
The 2018 Chevy Silverado represents the fifth model year of the third-generation Silverado. It is based on the GM K2 platform shared with other full-size pickup trucks and SUVs from GM. Though the line continues to sell well, it is becoming less competitive in the marketplace when compared to its primary rivals such as the Ford F-Series as it lacks cutting-edge features such as turbocharged engines, a rugged off-road variant such as the Ford F-150 Raptor, a diesel engine option in the light duty (1500) model, and also various modern features and equipment.

All-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country
Luckily, an all-new Silverado is on the way that is expected to address many if not all of the issues of the K2 model. Customers began taking delivery of the all-new truck in the second half of August 2018.
Chevrolet says that the all-new Silverado is the result of over 7,000 customer interviews – the most intensive research in its history. The new model uses higher grade alloy steel in the bed floor as well as various mixed materials that result in a reduction in weight and improved performance, with weight falling about 450 pounds. The truck also offers an expanded amount of models for a total of eight, including the new 2019 Silverado Trailboss.

All-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country
Riding on GM’s new T1 platform shared with other future GM full-size trucks and SUVs, the 2019 Silverado offers more technology, convenience features, and engine/transmission combinations. While details of five powertrain combos have already been revealed, GM has not yet shared details of the new inline-six 3.0L Duramax Diesel engine, only stating that it will be “best-performing” and that it will be mated to GM’s new 10-speed transmission.
Notably, the outgoing, Chevy will continue manufacturing and selling the outgoing, K2 generation Silverado alongside the all-new model for a limited amount of time.
Having overhauled the Silverado 1500, Chevy will next overhaul the Silverado Heavy Duty. The brand released a teaser image of the upcoming all-new 2020 Silverado HD in April 2018. The truck will be revealed and launched in the 2019 calendar year as a 2020 model year vehicle. The model family will be comprised of the Silverado 2500HD and Silverado 3500HD models, ride on a more capable version of the new T1 platform, share many technologies and design elements with the 2019 Silverado 1500, while being more robust and capable.
The 2019 Silverado Medium Duty series, comprised of the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD, completes the overhauled Silverado family.
The Chevrolet Silverado is built across the following GM plants:
- GM Flint Assembly in Flint, Michigan, USA
- GM Fort Wayne Assembly in Fort Wayne, Indiana, USA
- GM Oshawa Assembly  in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada
- GM Silao in Silao, Guanajuato, Mexico
- Navistar Springfield Assembly in Springfield, Ohio, USA (Silverado Medium Duty only)
The Silverado is sold mostly in North America, though it is also available in select markets outside North America, such as Latin America and the Middle East.

Ridgeline really didn’t hold up well
….I just read an article from Bloomberg stating the Silverado was down 23% for the month….But since this is a quarterly sales report, I guess this is good news. Hopefully the new trucks will truly catapult sales! But that new Ram is relentless!…
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2018/09/gm-sales-reportedly-fell-13-percent-in-august-2018/
When they get the interior right and the adaptable cruse control it will be a winner
Someone must be ok with the interior.
The out going trucks have been priced well and the new trucks are selling as fast as they are coming in. You see a truck making a drop at the dealer and they are gone soon after.
I don’t think the 2019’s with the new design will resonate well with consumers…
I disagree the new are going to set sales records!
I’ve seen a few of the new Rams and they are not very good looking. Look ok in pictures but in person they look homely. The Silverado kicks it but in looks. I think the interior is fine. You don’t need a big freaking screen for touching you should be driving anyway. The screen in tesla is a good example of just too much and dodge is following which in my opinion is dumb.
