Buick’s second-generation sub-compact crossover model, the 2020 Buick Encore, has been caught on video. Spy photographers captured a group of 2020 Buick Encore crossovers testing, and one feature curiously stood out.
As shown in the video, the Encores boasted towing hitches. The current Buick Encore isn’t much of a trailering kind of vehicle, but the brand could put more of an emphasis on towing for the second-generation. As models similarly sized to the Encore become more popular with buyers, perhaps giving it more towing oomph will make the tiny Buick more well rounded.
As noted in previous spy photos, the 2020 Encore is noticeably more upright and less bulbous than the current generation. And the Encore is well overdue for some serious attention. The Encore first shipped to the United States for the 2013 model year before exploding into a runaway success for the brand. It’s never been a particularly handsome thing, but expect the new model to pick up plenty of design cues from the latest batch of Buick such as the Regal Sportback and Enclave.
In one round of spy shots, we were able to distinctly pick out Buick’s winged grille hiding beneath camouflage and cladding. However, the Encores seen in the video here are still running pre-production lights, which makes it difficult to peg any major changes at the moment. Surely we’ll see more production elements trickle into prototypes as the 2020 Encore continues testing.
Although many have speculated the next Encore will grow in size, GM Authority believes the next model will stick to its current dimensions for the most part. Under the hood, we should expect one or two turbocharged four-cylinder engines paired with a six-speed or nine-speed automatic. A CVT isn’t out of the question either. The model will also be one of the first vehicles to ride on GM’s new Vehicle Set platform, either VSS-S (for crossovers) or VSS-F (for front-wheel drive vehicles). Look for the 2020 Encore to debut in 2019 as a 2020 model.
