The Terrain outsold two models – the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander – during the quarter.
The compact mainstream crossover segment expanded 14.8 percent during Q2 2018 and 14.1 percent during the first six months of 2018.
The GM Authority Take
We attribute the ongoing growth in Terrain sales to the following three factors:
- An all-new, competitive model that represents an attractive overall product
- Competitive incentives that enable the model to remain price-competitive
- A continuous change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics, where shoppers are choosing crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) over other vehicle types like sedans
It seems that GM is continuing to manage the Terrain’s launch quite well by keeping a healthy balance of supply, sales volume and incentives. We expect Terrain deliveries to continue growing in the near- to mid-term future.
About GMC Terrain
The GMC Terrain is a compact crossover that currently is GMC’s smallest crossover slotting below the midsize GMC Acadia.
The first-generation Terrain ran from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. The vehicle was a “tweeter” model that straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The second-generation Terrain was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its predecessor, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The second-generation, 2018 and newer Terrain features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the first-gen model. As a result, the new Terrain gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.
The 2019 model year Terrain sees one new color, various technology updates such as the addition of full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Front Pedestrian Braking, HD Rear Vision Camera, and HD Surround Vision, as well as the introduction of various packages, including the Terrain Black Edition.
The second-generation GMC Terrain is built by GM Mexico at the GM San Luis Potosi factory.

Comments
I have for several months seen a ton of new Terrains being sold in this area.
Isn’t it “tweener” instead of “tweeter? Alex?
Is the adaptive cruise a camera based or radar based?
I believe it is radar as the camera version I believe is discontinued in new models and only carrys forward in non updated models like the Canyon.
Because I saw on the GMC website it says it’s camera
We are both right.
Here is what the owners manual says.
Forward Collision Alert can warn drivers of a possible front-end collision situation with a vehicle they are following. Forward Collision Alert uses forward-looking camera, radar or both camera and radar sensors, depending on how the vehicle is equipped. It is designed to give drivers better detection range. In bad weather; it works better in vehicles equipped with the radar technology.
The lesser models must use the camera only the Denali and optioned SLT models get the Radar.
But I do not see adaptive listed on the order info just resume.
It’s listed under driver alert package ii on the build area
Thanks!
Beautiful vehicle………wish it had a real gearshift lever like an Equinox and a switch to disable start stop……I’d buy one tomorrow!!!!!!
Terrain should be selling on larger quantities given the market shift towards CUVs. Equinox should be outselling Escape, as well.
GM quality is well above average. Design is good too. Bankruptcy did damage the brands but good marketing can fix this.
GMC/Buick has tremendous potential as a semi-premium powerhouse. It just needs the right leadership.
Love the Terrain but won’t buy one if it is made in USA…………..
Styling is definitely unique.
