Firm Offering Electric Conversions For Chevy 6500XD Low-Cab-Forward Trucks

Customers looking at a Chevrolet low-cab-forward (LCF) commercial truck can not opt for something a little greener. Lightning Systems announced it is now offering battery-electric conversions for the Chevrolet 6500 XD LCF truck.

The swap replaces the standard 5.2-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with an electric motor an lithium-ion battery to provide 110 miles of estimated range and 295 horsepower. A two-speed Eaton automatic grants 1,821 pound-feet of torque in first gear and the truck will reach a governed 65 mph top speed.

Importantly, the electric conversion will not affect the 6500XD LCF truck’s GVWR; it will still haul up to 26,000 pounds.

Lightning Systems said in the announcement that local service centers and national partners will provide service and maintenance for customers, and potential buyers may be eligible for clean-vehicle vouchers in some states. The first 50 examples of 6500XD trucks with the electric powertrain will be delivered to Zeem Solutions and rotate them into service in late 2018.
