The GM Authority Take

The Trax turned quite the solid sales result in the second quarter of 2018, gaining enough sales volume to put it into second place in its segment in terms of cumulative sales volume.

Trax sales trailed those of the Jeep Compass, whose sales have literally taken off, increasing over 155 percent to an astounding 43,990 units as a result of the all-new, second-generation model (see Jeep Compass sales). Meanwhile, the Trax outsold the Jeep Renegade (see Jeep Renegade sales), Honda HR-V and the Trax’s own platform mate – the Buick Encore (see Buick Encore sales) by 727 units, 1,755 units, and 3,340 units, respectively.

We should note that the three FCA offerings in the segment (Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade and Fiat 500X) accounted for a very impressive 71,416 deliveries during the quarter. Meanwhile, the two GM offerings (Chevy Trax and Buick Encore) accounted for a cumulative 49,674 deliveries. As such, FCA outsold GM by 21,742 units during the quarter in the segment.

The sales gap between the Trax and other segment contenders was greater than the aforementioned models, as the Chevy outsold the Ford EcoSport (see Ford EcoSport sales), Hyundai Kona, Toyota C-HR, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, Kia Niro, Mazda CX-3 (see Mazda CX-3 sales), the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, Fiat 500X (see Fiat 500X sales), Nissan Kicks and its predecessor, the Nissan Juke.

Additionally, the Nissan Rogue line accounted for 98,748 deliveries during the quarter, but that figure consists of two distinct vehicle lines – the subcompact Rogue Sport that competes with the Trax as well as the compact Rogue that competes with the Equinox. Nissan refuses to split out sales of either model individually.

Going forward, we expect Trax sales volume to remain healthy, but continue being threatened by newer segment rivals, including the Ford EcoSport, Nissan Rogue Sport, Jeep Compass, Honda HR-V, Toyota CH-R, Hyundai Kona and Nissan Kicks. The Trax is one of the oldest offerings in this segment, and Chevy is hard at work on completely overhauling (redesigning and reengineering) the model, which is expected for the 2021 model year.

  • The subcompact Rogue Sport that competes with the Trax
  • The compact Rogue that competes with the Equinox
  • Nissan has refused to break out sales of the models individually

About Chevrolet Trax

The Chevrolet Trax is a subcompact crossover. It slots below the Equinox as Chevrolet’s smallest CUV and rides on the GM Gamma 2 platform shared with the Chevrolet Sonic/Aveo and Buick Encore. The model was Chevrolet’s first offering in the subcompact (B segment) crossover space and the second (after the Nissan Juke) to launch in its segment in the U.S. market.

Having launched for the 2015 model year in the U.S., the Trax received a refresh for the 2017 model year that consisted of all-new front and rear fascias, the replacement of the LTZ trim by the new range-topping Premier model, revised interior, a new infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and more. The 2018 Chevy Trax represents the fourth model year of the first-generation Trax and receives several changes including three new exterior colors, a new Trax Redline Edition model, and several equipment-level changes. The 2019 Trax got three new exterior colors and a new Premier badge on the tailgate. The 2020 model is expected to be the last model year of the current, first-generation Trax.

The Trax, which is called the Chevrolet Tracker in some markets like South America, Russia and the CIS, is built at the following GM plants:

  1. Five of the top six are from FCA, GM and FOMOCO, WOW! what a way to looses ground to the foreign brands!

Did the “Analysts predict this” as well as there “2023 forecasts”?

    1. True, but there are a few asterisks:
      – Supply of the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR is currently extremely limited, with demand outstripping supply. Both are working on this in the background and will have more units available by the end of the year
      – The same is true surrounding the supply and demand of the Hyundai Kona… but I am not aware of any changes to their capacity
      – Sales of the Nissan Rogue Sport are currently not being broken out, but I think it’s safe to say that they would be in the top 4…

Bottom line is that pretty much NOBODY expected this segment to grow so much and so quickly… and I’m not aware of any analysts that have predicted this level of growth.

    2. Jeep and Ford are “foreign brands”? Strange.

  2. So, contrary to the original plans, the Encore (twin of Opel/Vauxhall Mokka) and Trax are sold in the same market.

Don’t US customers see those two variants of the same basic development as being the same?

In Germany, this impression that Chevrolet Trax and Opel Mokka are the same car lead to the demand from Opel’s CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann (KTN) to withdraw Chevrolet mass market cars from the European market. KTN also was member of the GM Excecutive Committee.

BTW, the factory “Dongyue South” in Yantai, Shandong, China is quite probably not operated by GM China, but by its joint-venture with SAIC Motors, Shanghai GM.

    1. You expecting way to much from the American consumer. Most have no idea the buick encore and Trax are similar. Most probably don’t even know its not made in the US. Most don’t look at anything pass the options/price and MPG on the window Sticker.

Have to also remember the chevy trax buyer is different than the buick driver.

      1. Thanks for your reply!

How similar do YOU think the two brothers actually are?

It is very rare that one can see a Chevrolet Trax here in Germany, while the Mokka is of course quite frequently seen, as No. 4 of Opel’s best selling cars (10.9% of all newly registered Opels in Germany Jan-July ’18) and No. 9 of all 55 car models classified as SUV among all brands in the same period.

  3. There’s still more upside potential for Chevy’s CUV entry vehicle as one of the biggest complaints people have with the Trax is that the small CUV isn’t much fun to drive and this could be corrected with the 200 hp LWC 1.6L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo used in the Buick Cascada.

    1. Yeah it’s severely underpowered, almost like GM doesn’t want to sell too many of them.

I’d go for the 2.0T LSY with AWD, but GM bean counters would probably prefer your suggestion.

  4. The refresh on the 2017 Trax really helped it to gain sales. That said a totally redesigned Trax should be in the offing to deal with the Toyota CHR and Hyundai Kona, the latter of which has gotten a lot of interest and sales.

Also GM should seriously consider a Trax Activ trim for rugged terrain and off road use. They shouldnt even consider a Trax Activ, they should build it.
