The Equinox was outsold by the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Ford Escape. In addition, the line item for the Nissan Rogue shows higher sales figures than the Equinox, but the figures are rather misleading since they include the subcompact Rogue Sport as well as the compact Rogue. Only the latter competes in the segment of the Equinox, but Nissan reports sales of both models on the same line.

The Equinox outsold all other contenders, including the Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), the Equinox’s platform mate – the GMC Terrain (see GMC Terrain sales), Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), as well as the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander.

But despite outselling over half of its direct rivals during the quarter, Equinox deliveries grew slower than the segment average of 13.6 percent. They also grew slower than other key rivals, including the Jeep Cherokee, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Crosstrek, Mazda CX-5, VW Tiguan and the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Notably, Toyota and Honda managed to widen the sales volume gap between their compact CUVs and the Equinox, outselling Chevy’s offering by 32,964 and 23,565 units, respectively. The circumstance could be related to any combination of the following factors:

  • Great consumer interest and trust in Japanese vehicles when compared to their American counterparts,
  • Insufficient Equinox inventory at retail
  • Insufficient Equinox incentives

The compact mainstream crossover segment expanded 13.6 percent in Q2 2018 and 15 percent in the first six months of 2018.

About Chevrolet Equinox

2018 Chevrolet Equinox Redline Edition exterior - 2017 Chicago Auto Show 004

The Chevrolet Equinox is a compact crossover. It slots above the Chevrolet Trax and below the Chevrolet Traverse. It will also be positioned below the rumored to be the future Chevrolet Blazer.

The first-generation Equinox ran from the 2005-2009 model years and was based on the first-generation Theta platform. The second-generation Equinox was offered from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. Both the first- and second-generation models were “tweeners”, in that they straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The third-generation model was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC TerrainChevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its two predecessors, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.

The third-generation, 2018 and newer Equinox features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the second-gen model. As a result, the new Equinox gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety.

For North American and Eurasian markets, the 2019 Equinox is assembled at the following factories:

For the Chinese market, the Equinox is produced at the Wuhan II plant in Hubei, China operated by Shanghai-GM.

These three plants are currently the only facilities that build the Equinox.

  1. The Equinox is a middle-of-the-road product. There is nothing about it that stands out and leads the pack. Like many other GM products, the pricing is also in the stratosphere. A fully loaded LT is pushing 36k and doesn’t even include leather seats. A loaded Premier is over 42k. Ridiculous. An average product at a premium price.

  2. Chevrolet has become a nondescript, fifth place sort of brand. The Equinox is nice yet should be growing at the industry average. Getting beat by Escape is painful demonstrating that Chevy is a Kia rival when it should be benchmarking Honda. Terrain is a failure!

  3. My sister just bought a new Nissan. The local dealer owns all the dealerships in town. My sister’s son in law is general manager and part owner of local GM dealer. I talked to his father and he said they are just selling cars. There is zero loyality to GM products. Before he worked at GM he worked at BMW dealer in Nashville and they turned their noses down at GM as being America made junk. But you know what, raise the hood on a Chevy and then raise the hood on a BMW. Big difference, the Germans know how to build. Ask any vet who fought them in WWII.

    1. You look under the hood of a Caddy and you’ll be as equally impressed as you are with the BMW. If you really want to be impressed, look under the hood of the Mercedes or Audi.

  4. I look at GM SUVs and I get sick….where are the V6s, where are the V8s?????? to get a V8 I have to buy a Tahoe lead sled…no thanks. I like Tahoes but I do not have 6 kids. Maybe an Equinox with a twin turbo V6 at 450 HP with a 9 speed auto and All Wheel drive, now we are talking BMW…..Chevy and GM with idiots running the office. Even the new ZR1 ‘Vette is a day late and a dollar short. The Vette should be put on a diet, take off 800 pounds and add 250HP and offer all wheel drive.

    1. The crossover space you’re describing needs to be addressed by Cadillac, taking the fight directly to BMW, Mercedes, And Audi.

Thus far, Cadillac’s crossover are in no-man’s land: not too great on comfort or luxury, and not at all great in terms of performance.

  5. I just retired from the IBEW. Last year I worked at Flint,Lansing and Ft Wayne and the year before I started at Bowling Green and worked my way over to Louisville and did my time at Ford. Just for kicks I did 6 weeks at Toyota at Georgetown. I worked in the CPU for turning cranks on the 3L V6. The raw crankshafts come in from Japan and all the machining and decking and turning and polishing is done in house. We installed CPU control for lasers to do fine work, they polish 26 cranks at one time in 15 minutes. I also was at GM/Ft Worth in 2012 on the new stamping plant. I did time at night in assembly on new front end alignment and headlight adjustment. This system processed 8 Tahoes at a time in 15 minutes. We use to take bets on how much a vehicle cost as it came by….Tahoes, Denalis, Yukons, and Caddy Escalades….Caddy $105k

  6. What a disgusting looking side rear quarter panel . Why do GM designers have to play games and hottie?? up / avant garde whatever the greenhouse area ? Sitting in the back row , adults and children brings new meaning to these poor souls trying to see out their windows . How about sitting in a bathtub , though even that doesn’t truly describe the experience . GM leaves so much on the table that frankly I am now sure this is on purpose , perhaps for other lines to prosper instead ? Also the treatment on the back hatch is strange to say the least .

  7. Why do we read all these negative comments over the Equinox? It is GM second best selling vehicle (after the Silverado) for many years, and the BEST CUV in the U.S. (the others are “cheap”). So if it has such excellent sales numbers, why such negative criticism? I have a 2009 Equinox and it is the best vehicle in my 50 years of vehicle ownership (my first was a 1965 Rambler American).

I see all these posts part of the “sour grape” syndrome”: if you can buy one, then just post negative comments!! Buy U.S. brands and forget about the Germans who lost two World Wars!

  8. One can present a valid critism again Equinox without this being sour grapes.
Furthermore, Honda, Toyota and Mazda make some fantastic rivals with Jeep not far behind.
It is disapointing not to see Nox leading the segment. Chevrolet must focus on better interiors as FCA has.
WW2? Really? You’re serious? I agree that the US is unique for not favoring domestics like France, Germany, Japan but no one but an Israeli has the right to use WW2 as a reason.
