Buick Envision Sales – Q2 2018 –Â China
GM China elected not to break out Buick Envision sales for the second quarter in its quarterly report (see GM China Q2 2018 sales report). In fact, the automaker did not provide any sales figures or indicators for the vehicle.
Competitive Sales Comparison
Buick Envision U.S. deliveries fell significantly more than the segment average of 5.77 percent in the second quarter. The performance moves the Envision one spot down into fourth place in terms of cumulative sales volume in its segment, behind the Acura RDX in first, Lexus NX in second, and Lincoln MKC in third (see Lincoln MKC sales). The only model that the Envision outsold during the month was the Infiniti QX50, which is undergoing the launch of the all-new second-generation model, and therefore has limited inventories.

The compact premium crossover segment contracted nearly 6 percent in Q2 2018 and 1.23 percent in the first six months of 2018.
Below, we display sales numbers for prestige compact luxury crossovers for informational purposes. Despite being close in size to the Lexus NX, Acura RDX, Buick Envision, Lincoln MKC, and Infiniti QX50 these vehicles have starting prices roughly $5,000-$7,000 higher and therefore are generally purchased by a different subset of customers than those interested in premium compact crossovers. For instance, the Buick Envision starts at $34,065 while the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class starts at $40,050, the BMW X3 starts at $42,650, and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio starts at $41,995. As such, compact premium and prestige crossovers are comparable from a size standpoint, but are in different segments from a pricing/transactional standpoint.

GM Authority Take
The Envision is the right product at the right time, which makes its declining sales volume during the second quarter seem rather strange. During the time frame, the model was not impacted by new tariffs enacted by the Trump administration which impose a 25 percent tax on automobiles imported from China. GM is currently in the process of seeking an exemption for the Envision, but it’s unlikely that the effort will have a favorable outcome. Without a tariff exemption, GM stated that it would likely discontinue the crossover in the U.S. market.
As such, we attribute the model’s lackluster sales performance in the second quarter to poor supply and inventory levels of the vehicle. Another factor that will soon work against the Envision is internal competition from GM’s Cadillac brand, as the upcoming 2019 Cadillac XT4 compact crossover will aim to take on the Lexus NX, Acura RDX, and Infiniti QX50, will also post a threat to the Envision.
About Buick Envision
The Buick Envision is a compact crossover that slots above the subcompact Buick Encore and below the full-size Buick Enclave. The current, first-generation Envision was introduced for the 2016 model year. The vehicle is based on a variant of the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation GMC Terrain, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt.
The Envision launched with a relatively steep starting price of $42,995 in 2016, since it was available only in the two highest trim levels and with the most potent turbo 2.0L LTG engine. The 2017 model introduced several lower-end trim levels, enabling the starting price to drop to $34,990. The 2018 model goes unchanged from the 2017 model.
The 2019 Envision got a midcycle refresh that includes a significant amount of changes, including new headlights and front grille, the new GM 9-speed automatic transmission on Premium models, new exterior colors and interior color combinations, reconfiguring the exhaust pipe on non-Premium models to be turned under the vehicle, new taillights, new wheel choices, the replacement of Ice Blue ambient lighting with White, and the addition of three new technologies –  an ionizing air cleaner, Tire Fill Alert, and wireless cell phone charging.
The 2020 Envision will receive two new exterior colors, at the expense of two existing others.
The Buick Envision is built exclusively at the GM Dong Yue factory operated by GM China and SAIC for global markets.

Well this vehicle is nice but when you look today with the new Nox and Terrain out they both are very similar and much cheaper.
The refresh may help some but the price point on this is to where you can buy an Acadia for similar money.
I am not sure what the Terrain numbers are but in this area you can’t swing a dead cat and not hit one. They are selling like crazy here and every day you see more with temp tags on them new from the dealer.
I also think that many, myself included, would rather take a new Blazer when it hits the market.
too expensive — but most of all its assembled in China —I’m glad sales are down — buyers don’t want a Buick made in China .. BUILD IT IN THE USA
Agreed. I’d rather buy a Japanese car made in the US than a Buick made in China.
Trump tariffs to blame for the 2Q low sales figures???? I believe the effect of any tariffs had not yet hit US car lots in 2Q?
Boring car built in China for the Chinese who have a very large but boring car market. They brought this import to America thinking nobody would notice where it was coming from and placed it into a very crowded CUV field at a price point that competes with actual luxury names. How could it lose? Envision offers no real excitement in either design, performance, or technology, to get customers willing to make the move to Buick rather than into any of the competitors listed above. The only place I’ve really ever seen the Envision has been on rental car lots. If there are more around me, they’re probably just so bland I’ve paid them no notice. I unfortunately think but hope I’m wrong, is the XT4 will suffer in this market as well since it offers the same level of just good enough GM has been so proud to offer as of late.
The Buick Envision is over priced, interior is lacking.
I actually like it.
Well I actually don’t like Acura or infinity with all those paddle shifters and drive modes like your gonna go race at the autobahn.
Envision is simple luxury with a GNK AWD which Range Rover uses.
SUPER smooth and quiet 9 speed auto transmission and a LTG engine which produces 295lbs torque and 252 hp. A very very quiet ride. And a very nice sophisticated look. Go get your teenager Rdx and don’t forget to paddle shift. Sheeple will follow what everyone buys. Envision buyers are leaders.
