Buick, Cadillac Have Most Elderly Buyers In Pre-Owned Market

If a Buick or Cadillac is sitting on a CarMax dealership lot, chances are an older individual will drive the car home. CarMax compiled and studied the average buyer age at its dealerships for one year and ranked which brands draw the oldest buyers in the pre-owned vehicle market.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Buick and Cadillac sit at the top of the chart. Cadillac ranked number one with an average age of 47.1 and Buick came in second place at 45.6. As for other General Motors brands, GMC was the next oldest in fifth place and a 42.2 average age and Chevrolet came in 17th place with an average age of 38.9.

Mazda and Volkswagen draw the youngest buyers with average ages of 36.8 and 37.4.

CarMax also looked at vehicle segment to see where buyers trend. The oldest buyers flocked to pickup trucks (43.7 average age) and minivans (42.8 average age). Sports cars drew buyers with a 38.4 average age. The youngest buyers stuck by sedans and coupes with an average age of 37.4.

  1. I’m glad that older folks recognize that Cadillacs and Buicks are confortable.

  6. I’m 45, I drive a Cadillac ATS-V, she’s a beast. Not only does every “young” person stare at my car and beg to drive it, no “young” person can afford the $73,000 price tag.

    1. “no “young” person can afford the $73,000 price tag”

And that’s where you’re wrong. Wealthy youth have always existed.

The problem is that is they are driving Mercedes and Audi’s and wouldn’t touch a Cadillac because of the unfortunate stereotype of Cadillac’s primary demographic.

      1. These wealthy kids were not taught by their parents to be loyal! Instead they jump from manufacture based on what they perceive to be the in thing. When I talk to these young people about why they picked their benz or Audi and they cant tell me one dam thing about the car except for the name of it!

It’s sad that Cadillac has to chase these buyers, and ever worse that the industry caters to them.

Cadillac will once again be on top of the luxury market but I hope its because people are passionate about owning a Cadillac and not just buying because the kool kids have one!

  10. That’s good, because the older ones like us (57years young) have cash and buy the cars. So we are private customers and owners of the cars. Young people only lease cars and have no real connection to the car brand. That’s the difference, because young leaders only offer a cheap price!

  11. If 47 is considered “elderly”, then I must be a fossil at age 54, lol. And I own a 2010 Enclave, and a 17 Yukon Denali.(preceded by a 14 LaCrosse) I guess my wife and me were “elderly” when we bought our first Buick (the Enclave) in Sep. ’09 at the ripe old ages of 44 and 45, respectively, lol.

  12. 47 years average is not a bad age as this report data have it out to be. Compared this data 10 years ago, heck 20 years ago,

I’m 46 years old and I bought a pre-owned Cadillac at age 22 which was my very first car.

  13. I’m 85 and have driven Buicks since the HS prom when I drove a dark royal blue Dynaflow Roadlmaster with whitewall tires. Nowadays I tool around in a 2016 Garnet La Crosse which in is the best car I have ever owned and lots of fun to drive with the auto/maunual shift and 300 hp, quiet and comfortable.

I have issues with Buick’s advertising. The ads seem so generic, like “here’s the liineup, pick one”. If La Crosse is not selling well it is because few people know that it exists.
