Feast your eyes on the very first real-world photos of the 2019 Silverado TrailBoss as it was driving on and off road in Wyoming during the media drive last week.
Specifically, the model seen here is the Silverado LT TrailBoss coated in the Red Hot paint (color code G7C). Like all LT TrailBoss models, this one is based on the mid-range LT equipment group while also adding the Z7X suspension package that includes the following features:
- Z71 Off-Road equipment with 2-inch lift
- Monotube shocks
- Hill Descent Control
- Skid plates
- High-capacity air filter
- Z71 hard badge
Under the hood sits the refreshed 5.3L V8 L84 engine making 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The motor is part of the second-generation EcoTec3 engine family and features the Dynamic Fuel Management technology, which enables the engine to operate in 17 different patterns between 2 and 8 cylinders, depending on demand, to optimize power delivery and efficiency.
The motor is mated to the enhanced 8-speed automatic transmission (RPO code MQE). The gearbox includes overdrive, tow/haul mode, Cruise Grade Braking and Powertrain Grade Braking. The powertrain combination also includes the G80 locking differential when the Z82 Trailering Package is ordered.

One of the YouTube videos showed the Trailboss had unique headlights where parts of the inside had carbon fiber wrap unlike all the other trims. I wonder how many other little tweaks it has.
Surprised the 20″ wheels don’t come with Duratracs too.
Kind of @$$ backwards to offer 20″ on an offroad model with aggressive all terrain tires. Better to offer more 17″ options. Big rims and lower profile tires is 100% counterintuitive
18″ wheels are available on the Trailboss. 17’s were already a VERY tight fit on the K2 trucks. 17″ wheels might have been able to fit with the new IFS without an extreme backspace that would create all kinds of other issues.
I’m still yet to see the Silverado in Shadow Gray. I bet the Trailboss looks great in that color too.
That storage under rear seat could have been more spacious.
There is supposed to be another hard material storage bin that mounts in front of the factory one coming available from accessory parts.
I think GM did a great job on the exterior design of the Silverado and Sierra but the interiors seem like they should have come from a truck from 10 years ago
True. But its fully functional with today’s technology. Disappointed that the Sierra didnt get its own interior design.
Very good point. There are two things at play here:
1. The “wow” factor that one gets when looking at the cabin and
2. The usability factor that comes from actually driving, using and living with the cabin
This cabin lacks when it comes to #1, but delivers when it comes to #2.
How that will play in the marketplace when the trucks goes on sale in full volumes is anyone’s guess… but it would have been nice to have a more elegant cabin.
More elegant how?
Autoblog seem’d to be in the same boat on the interior. They compared to the F-150. I’ve been in a couple 2017 and 2018 F-150 of the XLT and Lariat variety. The current Silverado has a better quality feeling interior than the F-150. Ram and Silverado to me are on par with each other.
Something with more visual appeal. Something that makes once say “wow” instead of “meh” when getting into the truck for the very first time.
As for “how” that can be done, I have some ideas, including a different center stack design, better/different gauges, a larger center/infotainment screen (while keeping tactile controls), a different rugged but elegant shifter for some (high-end) models, better materials and accents, more intricate stitch work… the ideas don’t really have a limit and can be done. Problem is, GM decided to save some money or take the easy way out with the interior on these units… the interior is not bad, but it’s just not great, which is a lost opportunity.
Yuck. Glad I traded in my ’14 Silverado for a loaded ’18 Sierra. Can’t get over how weird the front end looks.
I like that storage under the rear seat, things slide around too much on the floor of my 2016 Silverado crew cab.
The interior is dull and lifeless, especially compared to the Ram Rebel.
It’s probably good for what it was intended for but still want to see a zr2 with a 6.2l and a Silverado ss with a 7.0l v8 pushing over 500hp.
When can we expect a re-style?
I saw the first one our dealer got in today in silver. It’s a sharp looking truck but the fish gill/air scoop (curtains) and the front fender dropping down into the bumper looks tacky. I thought they ruined the front end in photos but seeing it in person dare I say it looks worse. It was parked next to maybe a dozen 2018’s and the bumper, fenders and lack of air curtains on those models just make the new one look weird and wrong.
I did however love the side profile on the 2019… It’s the front end that needs a quick fix. Much like the Camaro SS.
