2019 Ford Ranger Out-Prices Chevrolet Colorado

Ford Motor Company officially launched its online build & price tool for the all-new, 2019 Ford Ranger in North America. The price tag: $25,395. That includes the base starting price and a $1,095 destination charge. If consumers wish to add all the technology and gadgets available, the price tag increases to an objectionable $47,020. For a midsize truck.

By comparison, the 2018 Chevy Colorado starts at $20,200 plus a $995 destination fee. The Chevy Colorado includes a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with 200 horsepower, while the 2019 Ford Ranger features a 2.3L Ecoboost four-cylinder engine. The Chevy Colorado does quickly jump in price, however, with 3.6L V6 or 2.8L Duramax diesel engine options, as well as a formidable ZR2 variant, which starts at around $41,000 before adding the bells and whistles.

Ford Authority reports that the North American Ford Ranger may become pricier in the near future, as Ford is expected to bring its off-road-focused Ranger Raptor to the market.

Overall, while the new Ranger starts higher than the Colorado, GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier. The Toyota Tacoma, however, still outprices the Ford Ranger by $1,100.

With that said, a refresh of the Colorado is expected, with introductions of new trim levels, such as the rumored Colorado Bison. It will be interesting to compare the price points of a refreshed Chevrolet Colorado and the new Ford Ranger in the near future with intensifying competition in this vehicle segment.

  1. I was looking at the prices on another web site and they are not far off and for the added content expected to just be a little more. Both play with the number a little different but both will competitive price wise.

Colorado’s can be also very expensive if you load them up. I have seen stickers on loaded and I mean loaded Z71 models at $47k and they had a diesel ZR2 with everything at $50K sticker.

The key is what you can get for $32K to 38K as that is the sweet spot in the segment. Most truck in this segment are in this range.

I expect the Raptor to be between $45K-51K.

Incentives then will be the equalizer in all this.

    1. Best time to buy the current Colorado/Canyon may be coming up soon. Even as they are aging they both look better than this new version of Ranger.

  2. Colorado Bison , really ?? Now here is a trendy name for a new upscale? model . Bison are built like tanks and have massive bodies but shorter legs and are hairy in the extreme . At least they are in our country , indeed we sent some breeding pairs to the US to kick start they’re revival there . This should be interesting as Americans love to kill game of any kind. WE can always tell when US killers shoot out of season and poach here , the carcass is left to rot , guess a picture or two of the grinning idiot who sportsmanly killed it is good enough . BISON , why not Buffalo , Elephant , Rhino , or Hippopotamus , lets here it for the GM Hippo , yeah !

  3. Comparing the base 2.5L engine in the Colorado vs the 2.3L turbo in the Ranger is absurd. Many will do it as they still simply look at it as a “4 banger is a 4 banger”, but in reality it’s no comparison. Torque is what’s important in trucks, even smaller trucks. Modern turbo charged engines make good torque at low rpm. Ford uses this same 2.3L turbo in the ’18 Mustang and Explorer. In the Explorer it makes 310 lb.ft. of torque at 3000 revs and even 272 lb.ft. at 2000. GM’s 2.5L NA I4? 191lb.ft. @ 4400. The 3.6L V6? 275 @ 4000. It’s hard for so many to comprehend, they think the smaller displacement turbo would need rev and rev to make usable power? I reality it’s the DOHC NA engines that have to rev higher to get into their powerband.

  5. The front end on this new ranger looks more like a mini 2019 Ram 1500 than anything in the F series line-up. Anyone else see it?

  6. As Grawdaddy says it was a stretch and it sure was .The Bison name got me going , probably one of the ugliest 4 legged beasts on the planet . Back about 2002 perhaps , didn’t GM have a Buick Cavalier type model called the Sunfire or Sunbird ? Sunbird not so much but Sunfire might be a great name if this model is going to actually be a performance machine . Lets pick a better name , please ??

    1. I agree Bison would not be my first choice for this truck mostly because it was an old Chevy work truck.

As for Sunfire it was just a crappy economy car.

Let’s just keep looking for a better name.

  7. The current Colorado/Canyon and the coming Ranger are too big. The Colorado feels as big as my old ’70 C/10. I love my ’07 Ranger but, I am looking at something new. I love the Cocoa/Dune interior of the Canyon but, I’ll wait to see what Ford has. The Canyon is #1 on my list right now.

    1. I own a 2017 Canyon SLT crew cab 4×4 long bed with the 2.8L diesel. White with cocoa/dune interior. I had to order it because that combo was not available at any dealer. 20k miles and zero regrets. 30 mpg highway. It’s not a screamer but the torque is sweet. You won’t go wrong keeping the Canyon at the top of your list.

      1. I love my Canyon and have no regrets.

Some folks will snipe that it lacks this or that minor detail but for what I paid I have no complaints.

With a CCSB V6 4×4 I just hit 20.2 in daily driving non highway. That is over 2000 miles.

  8. The term Bison Is the code name given by GM since AEV provided the parts for the concept and AEV uses the Bison in their name/logo. I’m not sure if that’s what they are actually going to call it when it’s released or if it will be an option package for the ZR2.

    1. Nothing has been made official but it was used on the show truck and GM has held the rights to the name for a long time.

      Time will tell.
