The GM Authority Take

The Colorado’s 47 percent growth rate during the second quarter was the highest in the segment, outpacing the 21.5 percent growth rate of the segment as well as the growth rate of all competitors, including the Toyota Tacoma (up 22 percent) and Nissan Frontier (down 15 percent). The performance continues the impressive growth rate seen in March (the last month that GM stopped reporting monthly sales figures), while also representing a notable about-turn from February, when Colorado sales grew slower than the rest of the segment.

The Colorado’s Q2 2018 U.S. sales performance enabled it to maintain its second place position in its segment from a sales volume standpoint, behind the Toyota Tacoma (by 21,471 units), yet ahead of the Nissan Frontier (by 22,140 units) as well as the Colorado’s platform mate, the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales).

We believe that Colorado sales increased in Q2 due to a mix of the following factors:

  • A desirable product
  • A growing segment
  • Strong sales to fleet and commercial customers, on which GM has been focusing from a sales operations standpoint
  • Healthy incentives at the retail level

About Chevrolet Colorado

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Exterior 014

The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet’s smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado’s trim levels in Mexico).

The current model was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.

The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees a new Colorado ZR2 Bison package, new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems that represent the third generation of Chevrolet infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, a second in-cabin microphone, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, UltraSonic Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models.

A midcycle refresh for the 2020 model years is expected to bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.

The Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. International versions of the truck are built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong operated by GM Thailand. The GM Sao Jose Dos Campos plant operated by GM Brazil builds the equivalent Chevy S10 for South American markets.

  1. I think for a mid-cycle refresh they should offer another engine choice before the Ranger hits the market. The 3.0TT with 400hp 400lb-ft. And introduce an LTZ AND SS trim
Offer the 3.0TT on LTZ, SS, Denali, ZR2

Don’t want to lose momentum when the Ranger comes out and they need to stay out in front and not fall behind like the 2019 Silverado. Ford just announced they will offer the 450hp Raptor engine in the regular F150

    1. It would be nice but just how much are you willing to pay.

A Turbo Diesel ZR2 now can reach $50,000. A more expensive engine like this would drive the price this high at the min.

In this segment people will only pay so much before they go to a full size. The sales taper off once you get to $38,000 accept for the limited number of people willing to pay more for a ZR2 and Denali.

How do I know I am one who bought one of the latter ones because I wanted the smaller truck. But even then I still considered going to a full size SLT that was loaded for only $1500 more with rebates.

While the Bison is coming to test these higher prices. I expect sales but limited in number.

      1. Nah it would be a different vehicle with a different purpose
A 400hp LTZ crew cab Colorado would be similar in price to a mid level cloth seat extended cab 5.3 Silverado with less options.

It’s like saying there is no reason for a 650hp ZL1 and a similar priced 460hp C7 Grand Sport

Or even a loaded Chevy Cruze vs a similar priced mid level Malibu

  2. GMA your take is somewhat correct. The truck has always been desirable.

But the trouble has been till this year supplies have been limited. When I shopped last year there were some regions like SO Cal that had many of these trucks but here in the Mid West often most dealers had 6 or less trucks. I even visited some that had no trucks.

This year those same dealers are holding 20-30 trucks in stock. I believe the greatest change is availability and distribution has finally found the right mix. It also has gotten the dealers more willing to deal but even then the incentives are better but no where like the full size.

  3. I don’t know why the …. Tacoma keeps selling in this high number’s. Don’t people read or compare number’s between the two trucks before purchacing. Otherwise the Colorado/Canyon have been a success for GM since they hit the market, but I wish the could be selling in higher quantities. I hate’s the Shitcomas.
