Behold our first complete gallery of the refreshed 2019 Camaro SS.
Captured by GM Authority photographers while undergoing final validation testing in metro Detroit, the vehicle seen here is coated in the Red Hot exterior color. Additionally, we have reason to believe that the 2019 Camaro SS seen here is the 1SS trim, for various reasons outlined below.
The 2019 Camaro has not been seen in this kind of detail before, let alone in the Red Hot color, making these photos specially notable.
2019 Camaro SS – Front
New front-end styling specific to the SS trim level adorns this 2019 Camaro SS.
The front fascia is new, and consists of a new grille, dual-element headlamps, LED signature lighting and extractor-style hood. The front lighting on this particular validation model features amber-colored marker lights in the top cluster, as well as horizontal LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) that distinguished the 2016-2018 Camaro SS from the 2019 Camaro Base in LS/LT trim, which featured vertical DRLs. It’s the amber-colored lights that make us believe that we’re looking at a 2019 Camaro 1SS, since the 2SS models are equipped with LED marker lights.
Before you ask: looking at the gallery below, we noticed that this 2019 Camaro SS prototype is switching its amber marker lights on and off as it’s driving by our photographers. We’re just as curious as you are about why that is. Either way, the gallery shows the tester with its rear lights both on and off.
There’s also the “flowtie” open bowtie grille emblem on the polished grille, along with aero-enhancing air curtains, Though the design of the curtains has come under some criticism by some observers, we must say that they actually look rather attractive in these photos, perhaps because of the color combination – since the Red Hot color creates a striking contrast with the shiny black grille.
As we’ve stated upon seeing the 2019 Camaro Base: whether you hate or love the 2019 Camaro refresh, there is no denying that it is instantly recognizable as being different from the 2016-2018 models.
2019 Camaro SS – Side
Though the side profile of the 2019 Camaro SS facelift remains unchanged from the 2016-2018 models, we should note that the vehicle seen here is wearing a new set of wheels.
Assigned Limited Production Option (LPO) code 57S, these new 20-inch (50.8 cm) 5-split spoke Satin Black wheels are available exclusively on SS (1SS and 2SS) equipment groups of the 2019 Camaro SS.
2019 Camaro SS – Rear
At the rear, the 2019 Camaro SS brings a revised rear fascia as well as new “sculpted” LED taillamps with dark-tinted neutral-density (clear) lenses that are specific to the 2019 Camaro SS and ZL1. The gallery below shows the tester with its rear lights both on and off.
This model features four exhaust outlets, indicating that it’s equipped with the dual-mode performance exhaust. The “fin” communications antenna on the roof is body-colored, which is not the case for lesser LS and LT models.
Under The Hood
For the 2019 model year, the Camaro SS remains powered by the naturally-aspirated 6.2L V-8 LT1 engine mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or the new-for-2019 GM 10-speed automatic. The motor is rated at 455 horsepower and 455 pound-feet of torque. Notably, the new 10-speed includes lift-foot gear hold, Tour, Sport and Track modes, custom launch control and line lock.
Lesser models, such as the Camaro LS and LT, carry over the 2.0L Turbo I-4 LTG engine as standard and 3.6L V-6 LGX engine as optional. Those motors are mated either to a six-speed manual transmission or the GM 8-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the range-topping Camaro ZL1 is powered by the supercharged 6.2L V-8 LT4 mated to either the six-speed manual or the GM 10-speed auto. The even more extreme Camaro ZL1 1LE comes with the supercharged LT4 mated exclusively to the 6-speed manual gearbox.
Inside, the 2019 Camaro SS retains the well-appointed interior of the 2016-2018 models, while also delivering various upgrades, including:
- Chevrolet Infotainment 3 radio with 8-inch color touchscreen with available navigation. The system offers greater personalization and a more intuitive user interface while also leveraging Cloud connectivity to enhance personalization, navigation, voice recognition, apps and more.
- Full-display Rear Camera Mirror with high-definition view quality (only on the 2019 Camaro 2SS)
- Forward Collision Alert (only on the 2019 Camaro 2SS Coupe)
- Revised ambient lighting with new blended color choices
Pricing & Availability
2019 Camaro SS pricing has not yet been announced, but is expected to remain similar to the 2018 model, which is priced to start at $37,995 for the Camaro 1SS Coupe.
The majority of the 2019 Camaro range, including the 2019 Camaro SS, will become available in the third quarter of 2018, while the SS model will launch in the fourth quarter.
Rumors of a lower-priced 0SS Camaro have been prevalent, but have yet to materialize for the 2019 model year. Perhaps the 2020 model year will bring us such as feature.
