First Trailer For Bumblebee Spin-Off Movie Has Autobot Ditching Chevy Camaro For VW Beetle: Video

The Transformers films not only captured audiences of all ages, but the turned the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro into a star. But, for Bumblebee’s next act, he’s going back in time to 1987—and he’s no longer a Chevrolet Camaro.

The first trailer for the spin-off film titled “Bumblebee” has our favorite Autobot moving to a Volkswagen Beetle rather than the pony car. We don’t know much else about the movie aside from the fact that it takes place in 1987 with Bumblebee on the run.

Paramount Pictures offered up a brief synopsis of the film:

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.

Although some modern fans may be sad to see Bumblebee move to a VW Beetle, the original Bumblebee toy was actually based on a Beetle. Thus, it should appease long-time fans. “Bumblebee” is set to release December 21, 2018.

  1. In the early Transformer cartoons by Hasbro, Bumblebee was a small, human sized robot that was very talkative. The producers may be correct staring his history as a VW Beetle, but they should had made it smaller and talkative. Optimus did explain in the newer movies why Bumblebee could not talk. In the “Transformer Prime” animation, Bumblebee can talk again and kills Megatron as a revenge for losing his voice.

  4. I won’t be surprised if the movie ends with Bumblebee picking the 2nd-gen from the first movie.

    1. Why? This is based on the original Hasbro animation in 1987. The modern Bumblebee will remain a Chevy Camaro.
