Ahead of its production start later this year, Cadillac has launched the 2019 XT4 configurator. The tool includes every package and possible option to build the compact Cadillac crossover of a prospective buyer’s dreams.
And as we reported last month, the most expensive XT4 will cost $56,000 after tacking on all available options to a Premium Luxury or Premium Sport model. We went through the configurator and landed at exactly $56,635.
The XT4 introduces Cadillac’s new Y trim strategy. Buyers can either follow the Luxury or Sport trim for more distinct looks. Every XT4 begins with the Luxury trim, which starts at $35,790. Don’t expect “luxury” with the Luxury trim, however. The base model doesn’t include many goodies aside from basic creature comforts like an eight-inch touchscreen CUE system, LED head and taillights, a rear-vision camera and rear park assist. However, buyers can add on select packages to the base model.
Moving to either the Premium Luxury or Sport trims increases the MSRP to $40,290, no matter which. The Premium Luxury models adds leather seating, a suite of active safety features, and more. The Sport trim ditches chrome for black accents and a pair of clear LED taillights at the rear. All-wheel drive is a $2,500 option regardless of trim.
Packages to add to the top-of-the-line Premium Luxury model include a comfort and convenience package ($1,050), enhanced visibility package ($1,500), technology package ($1,650), driver assist package ($1,100), cold weather package ($850) and driver awareness package ($770).
One interesting qualm: every single exterior color is an extra-cost option… except for silver.

Well this is overwhelming. So many packages and options. Everything is a la carte. And the price adds up quick. Looks like they took a page out of the Germans’ book on this one.
Very frustrating that so many active safety features and basic luxury touches are optional. Acura’s new RDX has most this stuff standard, and for less money. I’m beginning to worry about the success of this model. It didn’t wow everyone like we were expecting with the interior and engine, and the pricing isn’t that competitive.
The new RDX also has a face not even a mother would love.
Second that.
While I agree its gets expensive very quickly, I prefer this way over the previous one. That way you’re not forced to get features\options Y & Z in order to get X, which is the one you want.
For example you want an Escalade with the massage seats, you have to get the Platinum model & all the stuff that comes with it whether you want them or not, like the 2005 era rear entertainment system with 2 headrest mounted 7″ screens & roof mounted “9 screen. You can have the screens in lower trim Escalades (2 options for $3,700), but not the massage seats … Stupid imo.
Already envisioning my local dealer ads with “$8,000 OFF MSRP!”
Acura is an also ran brand.
Hey, Sean, did you see what happened last night in Ontario, Canada? Your Canadian buddies to the north of you kicked out the left-wing Liberal government you loved so much and voted in a Pro-Trump Conservative party.
Any thoughts? You had a lot to say before…Going to be a fun ride with the auto industry and archaic unions, isnt it?
does that mean ontario is now northern alabama? universal health care is on its way out? please. doug ford’s party is the progressive conservative party. they are center right. not far right.
I’ve noticed it’s difficult for Americans to understand a political climate that isn’t a two-party system, or isn’t neatly divided into ‘left’ and ‘right’ camps.
It needs more vibrant colors both inside & out. An optional body-colored Sport bodykit would go a long way too.
That said, Sport trim looks very sinister in black with the 20″ wheels.
The exterior colors are fine as is for this particular model. I would love to see the interior with red seats, console, dash and door inserts mixed with black like the ones in the ATS and CTS somewhat. That would be one cool looking interior.
Cadillac could fix the shattered CUE screen in our ATS that way we would not have to deal with two disappointments at once. This XT4 is so disappointing. Like our ATS, we do love the look but the low power rating, lackluster interior, and FWD/AWD. How could anybody order this before at least sitting in one or driving one. After all its not like Cadillac can be trusted for quality, reliability , or customer satisfaction any longer. We test drove an AUDI A4 yesterday and compared to our ATS that car was a DREAM. If those are the customers Cadillac has to win back GOOD LUCK, and it is cheaper than an ATS. This is so SAD.
I’m in total agreement with the shattered CUE screen, I’m not so much on the rest of the “faults” with this vehicle or other GM vehicles. We buy nearly $100k of GM product between the business we own and personal vehicles every couple years. GM has been the best for us in terms overall reliability and dealership service. While we have had a few duds, or major issues here and there, GM overall (in most instances) has stepped in and warrantied or goodwilled so many things.
We have had the likes of BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche for our personal cars, and I can say without a doubt that while often times offering a “nicer” product; their service is what always had us leave those brands. They all proved to have their own issues / short comings, often times more so than our GM product, always more complex in nature (usually electrical gremlins), and always ridiculously expensive. Not to mention the insane cost of service once outside the gratis warranty / service period (Mercedes and Porsche especially… $200-300 per oil change).
Also, on the power rating side, I’m not appalled by the numbers in the slightest bit.
The Mercedes GLC 300 has 241hp
The Lexus NX has 194-235hp depending on equipment
The BMW X2 has 228hp
The Audi Q3 has 200hp
The Caddy XT4 has 237hp
Those numbers are right in line for its size and weight.
I also agree, that is what has kept me driving GM for 38 years. Overall I still think MOST have been good. You however are the customer GM wants. $50,000 a year, no wonder they fix whatever they have to so you keep walking in the door. I however like 10 years if possible unless terrible. GM has paid one warranty before the last 3 vehicles. 38 years 1 warranty (transmission cooler lines 2007 Silverado classic HD Duramax leaked) 35,000 miles. The last 3 TERRIBLE 2015 Canyon, seat recall, HVAC door crack ( bandaid clamp), 2014 Cadillac ATS, automatic crash response system ( I PAID), rear end leaks, Cue screen is broke, ( I WILL PAY). 2017 Denali HD Duramax, headliner rattle 1800 miles ( THEY PAID), rear wheel bearing could come loose( THEY PAID) Emission recall ( THEY PAID), Faulty fuel cap ( THEY PAID) all under 5500 miles. The trouble is I do all my oil changes, filter changes, and brake work. So the dealers sell me a car done. If the dealer doesn’t care, and GM doesn’t care, then what.
I also agree the HP ratings are in line with others. BUT the HP rating is in line on our ATS with the Audi A4 we drove yesterday. Both 2.0T, BUT the Audi was SOOO, SOOO SMOOOOTH, I simply could not believe it. All three of our new GM vehicles just cant figure out how to shift, jerky, luggy, revy, that Audi was unbelievable. In my opinion if Cadillac is going to get back the others who have switched to the other brands, it will take an expensive repair or something. They, are not going to switch back to get the same, and that is if it is the same, we will find out when driving it. They also remember why they switched in the first place. Now we need a BETTER, cheaper Cadillac, not just maybe the same.
LifeLongGMowner, you’re spot on that GM has a vested interest in keeping us satisfied with them.
However, the service has always for the most part been that way for us. It shouldn’t matter if I buy 50k of vehicles every year, or every 10 years, GM nor any manufacture knows of what potential business may come from one measly sale or act of goodwill. Service is the biggest reason we left Ford, and is the biggest reason of many we no longer purchase RAM. It has been strictly GM for a decade now.
The aforementioned brands did not care about purchase quantity or customer satisfaction. As stated before, we have had bad ones from every brand, as well as good ones; including one buy back by GM on a Chevy Cruze with failing brakes (dealer almost wrecked out on a road test). I would also note that my servicing dealers only do warranty work, or major items we cannot or do not have time for in our shop (on rare occasion). All oil changes, tire rotations, brakes, tranny service, fuel filters on Duramax trucks and car lines etc are done by me or one of our guys; furthermore, the selling dealers are not our servicing dealers.
With the XT4 motor, the big news was that it was supposedly going to be “Import / German” smooth and refined. If you’ll remember there was big disappointment by some because the power ratings were lower than in the Equinox or Malibu, to which GM said in replacement that it would have world class refinement. In all fairness, this needs to be seen, but I can hope for GM’s future that this motor does truly live up to their own hype.
You know how many times the GM hype has faded, too many to mention. GM was going to have a V6 Duramax before Bankruptcy, Cadillac has been going to come back for 20 years now. I could go on and on. Maybe the huge sales numbers in China will continue to push enough cash into GM so they can live up to this hype. 10 years is a long term plan. How many changes to this plan will there be? Hopefully ALOT. What will change the status quo. GM CATCHES up, others LEAP forward. This Cadillac is said to act like the others, not better than the others. This is the most disappointing thing to me of Cadillac, Chevrolet is said to have better Quality and reliability the last 3 years. Even though I think you cant measure reliability until at least 5 years and 70,000 miles, in my opinion. Chevrolet and GM are trying to convince you a reliable vehicle is one 3 years old.
But it is a SHAME that GM does NOT WANT TO, and GM customers allow them NOT to, FIX THE KNOWN PROBLEMS. Unless someone dies, or its a EPA law you are out of luck. Just like the little spring in the ignition, someone said that’s good enough and it cost sales, lives, reputation and more money from GM. Who is making these decisions? Especially on a Cadillac. In our neck of the woods Lincoln is selling 10 to 1 over Cadillac right now, but its just an observation while out and about. Fix the known problems for loyal customers.
I could not disagree more with your assessment.
Nothing but GM for me since started buying cars 30 years ago.
My current GM ride, a 2014 Impala LTZ, is just another in a long line of reliable GM vehicles.
And my 1969 GTO Convertible that underwent a frame off resto is amazing.
I used to sell Audi/ Porsche vehicles last year and now sell GM vehicles. I can now sell my customers with a clear conscience that there isn’t a guaranteed 83% chance that they’ll be in for service in three months.
Yes, 83% chance of a major service issue within the first three months. Our service director did the math himself, taking into account of all our sales over the last five years. Cadillac isn’t perfect, but it’s clear that its getting better.
In any case, I’m especially convinced that a Porsche isn’t a vehicle, it’s a purpose-built machine designed to regularly extract money from jerks with too much money!
They are going to sell so many of these XT4s.
Yeah, it’s not something enthusiasts would like, but it the exact size, configuration, body style, and price that so many shoppers are looking for now.
Dan Neil has a review of the compact 2019 Volvo XC 40 R at a loaded $45,935 in the WSJ–powered by a 4 cylinder with 248 hp– he slams the premium price and the sluggish acceleration (0 to 60– 6.2 seconds)—what would he say about the XT4 loaded at $56,000 and a 4 cylinder of 237 hp which probably has a similar 0 to 60 as the XC 40 ?
Am I the only one doing the math? I added up all the packages and got $49,710 but the article says $56,635. Can’t be $7,000 shipping can it?
Codilac, no you have to equip it with AWD, the sunroof, Premium luxury or premium sport, check all boxes (nav, driver convenience packages, etc…) then add on a bunch of the dealer installed options that show prices. Outside of that, equipping it with about everything I would ever want and then some, I end up around 50k.
I just used the configurator and it is what I expected, for the most part. I am a little surprised that when you upgrade, you have to get 20 inch tires, but such is life. When you expect to test drive the XT4?
