Genesis To Launch GT Sports Car To Rival Corvette Next Decade

Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand, has big plans that extend well into next decade, and they include a Corvette rival.

Drive reported last Saturday that the Genesis Essentia concept, shown at the 2018 New York Auto Show, will more than likely enter production, and the team wants to inspire a new generation of auto enthusiasts. Global head of Genesis, Manfred Fitzgerald, told the publication he wants the car to evoke the same feelings the Corvette and Ford Mustang did at their launch.

He said automakers have “lost the emotions” and Genesis wants to change the narrative with a GT sports car. The Essentia is an all-electric sports car with radical design and advanced vehicle-to-infrastructure technology. Fitzgerald believes the car could come to fruition as soon as 2021.

By then, we’ll certainly have a mid-engine C8 Corvette ready for battle to challenge Genesis’ newcomer, even though the two cars will take radically different approaches. The Genesis executive thinks electrification levels the playing field when it comes to performance cars and it offers a fresh start for the brand. Cadillac has also made similar comments about electric cars and the chance to rebuild its image on the budding powertrains.
