The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 currently plays in a space all its own. It’s smaller than Ram or Ford’s off-road pickups, but the Colorado ZR2 lacks some of the grunt found in its larger rivals with bigger engines. Still, it’s a highly capable off-roader meant more for rock crawling.
The Ford Raptor has long been an icon in the segment, but Motor Trend pitted two alternatives to the big Ford in a new episode of Head2Head. The episode features the Colorado ZR2 and the Ram Powerwagon face off to see which is the better off-roader.
On paper, the Ram is the hot rod of the two. It boasts a 410-horsepower 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine compared to the Colorado ZR2’s 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder diesel engine. Chevy’s pickup makes just 186 hp, but an impressive 369 pound-feet of torque to make up for it.
Both trucks are capable, too. As we know, the Colorado ZR2 packs a host of upgraded suspension parts, including its Multimatic DSSV dampers. The Ram doesn’t show up empty-handed, though. It borrows some of its off-road credentials from the Jeep Wrangler, features massive approach and departure angles and it’s extra power certainly helps its case, too.
We won’t spoil the outcome, but you can watch a preview of the episode above. Head to the link here to watch the full episode at Motor Trend On Demand.
