The GM Authority Take
The Colorado’s 52 percent March growth rate was the highest in the segment, outpacing the segment’s 29 percent overall growth rate as well as the growth rates of all competitors – including the Toyota Tacoma (up 21 percent) and Nissan Frontier (up 28 percent). The performance marks a substantial about-turn from February, when Colorado sales grew slower than the rest of the segment.
The Colorado’s March U.S. sales performance enabled the midsize truck to maintain its second place position in its segment, behind the Toyota Tacoma yet ahead of the Nissan Frontier as well as the Colorado’s platform mate, the GMC Canyon (see GMC Canyon sales).
We believe that Colorado sales increased in March due to a mix of the following factors:
- A desirable product in a growing segment
- Strong sales to fleet and commercial customers
- Healthy incentives at the retail level

About Chevrolet Colorado
The Chevrolet Colorado is a mid-size pickup truck. It is currently Chevrolet’s smallest pickup truck in the U.S. and Canada, slotting under the full-size Chevrolet Silverado. In Mexico, the Colorado slots above the compact Chevrolet Montana but below the Silverado/Cheyenne (the name for some of Silverado’s trim levels in Mexico).
The current model was introduced in 2015 and represents the second generation of the Colorado nameplate. The model rides on the GMT-31XX platform shared with the GMC Canyon, as well as the international-market Chevrolet Colorado/S10 and Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The 2018 Chevy Colorado represents the fourth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle remains highly competitive in its segment, offering two gasoline engines and a diesel motor, which is a segment exclusive. The off-road-specific Colorado ZR2 was launched for the 2017 model year. However, the Colorado family continues to lack various features asked by many present and potential customers, such as a moonroof, a sliding rear window, as well as a range-topping LTZ or High Country trim level.
The 2019 Chevy Colorado represents the the fifth model year of the second-generation Colorado. The vehicle sees new exterior colors, a new 18-inch wheel, black bowties for every ZR2 model. Additionally, the 2019 Colorado gets new set of infotainment systems, Type A and Type C USB ports, an in-cabin microphone for the passenger, a high-def Rear Vision Camera, Rear Park Assist, a heated steering wheel, and 6-way power driver seat on some models.
A midcycle refresh for the 2020 model years is expected to bring revised front and rear styling, as well as possible updates to the interior, and powertrain.
The Chevrolet Colorado is built at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. International versions of the truck are built at the GM Thailand plant in Rayong operated by GM Thailand.

It’s getting to be time for a refresh. New front end with LED lights and interior tweaks. And new engine specs to get out and stay infront of the Ranger when it comes. I think they should offer two tone paint too. They should push out the interior walls of the bed line what was done for the 2019 full size trucks – gain that extybed volume
It is all about the money. They are really finally offering the best prices at most dealers now vs. just some dealers. in the past the deals have been meager unless you happened on to a good deal or shopped one of the mega truck dealers like Laura.
Just saw a ZR2 for $37.000 off the $44.000 sticker.
There will be some changes in model packages this year and next year a light refresh till the new model in 2022 as a 23 unless GM changes what they had set.
The big change for this year will be the GMC AT4 replacing the All Terrain. It is going to be the new Z71 package. Chevy has yet to announce theirs but you have to wonder if it will be the Trail Boss like the Full Size that replaced the Z71.
Expect them both to be seeing a 2″ lift.
The V6 was just changed last year. Expect at some point a Turbo 4 and maybe more power for the Diesel? 10 speed at some point.
Thanks Scott for this information.
I am the proud owner of this truck and as a lady, it fits my gardening needs, my body small frame and everything else I need. I am very pleased with this “small big truck”. Smile
The truck is comfortable on my occasional 3 hour drives and performs very nicely. I look forward to more improvements like automatic opening and closing of little sliding rear cabin window as well as an assist handle for people who are short like me and use the steering wheel to pull my 5’1″ self up into the truck. Think about WOMEN when y’all put these vehicles/cars etc. together!!!
People stop me in parking lots to ask about this truck. They admire and like it.

The ZR2 drives great. I really enjoy it but won’t buy one without a manual transmission. The international models have it so there is no engineering cost to have it as an option. C’mon GM, make the manual in the ZR2 optional!
GM have averaged approx. 145k units sold these past few years of these trucks between GMC and Chevy. Huge success story to the point where the competition is coming back into this market. It’s nice to get that market share and amortize the cost of these things over so many units, but GM needs to stay on top of this product and not let it get too stale.
