We’re likely months away from the 2019 Chevrolet Camaro‘s launch, but one model snuck into a local Michigan car gathering and surprised a group of attendees.
The YouTube video provides a quick walkaround of the 2019 Camaro SS, seen in gray, and it also gives us our first look at the car outside of professional press photos. While we do think the design is still somewhat controversial, it does appear to look better in the real world. That’s especially true of the rear taillights.
Aside from the revised design, not much else changes for the 2019 model year. On the mechanical side of things, the 2019 Camaro gains a 10-speed automatic transmission with a custom launch control and line-lock function. Otherwise, it’s the same tried-and-true 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine providing power.
Outside of the Camaro SS, the rest of the nameplate’s range gets updated and tweaked styling, too. Notably, the 2019 model year also ushers in the Camaro Turbo 1LE with track-focused upgrades for the entry-level Camaro.
Check out the Camaro SS in the video up above.

I think it looks awesome! It looks chiseled and aggressive. To me it’s an improvement over current model.
It would be nice if he peeked inside for a second there.
I bet Chevy dropped it off there.
This is awesome. As I was reading others comments I had 10 likes and 1 dislike. Now it’s 10-19
Guy below that said it’s hideous was 0-3, now it’s 19-3…hahaha…IP trolls are in full force.
The front IS hideous.. not everyone that dislikes it is a troll by the way
You’re right. Sure it isn’t. You have every right not to like it. I was just pointing out the obvious. Vote away! It won’t change my mind one way or the other.
After seeing this video, my fears about the front bumper of the SS were realized. Who had the idea to put a big black book shelf on the front end of the car? The bow tie even draws more attention to it. That big rub strip needs to be body colored and the bow tie de-emphasized and moved up in to the center grill. The rear tail lights turned out nicer than what I could see from a previous picture. I really liked the sleek rear lamps on the ’16 – ’18 models, but this is a nice transition that somewhat embodies that previous sleek look.
I think it looks a lot better in that vid than the initial press photos did.
The only thing I would change is remove the bow tie. The front end looks much cleaner with out it. I know it is traditional but not every Camaro had one.
The Emblem looks forced.
Most of todays models are very dimensional and need to be seen in person before condemning or praising. Photos just do not always relate the true look.
I agree, the first thing I would do is go to the body shop and have them remove the front BowTie. All manufactures seem to be paranoid that you need to see the company logo sprayed all over the front end. Chevy across all lines seem to be the worse but not as bad as Mercedes, they’re about the size of a old fashioned 7″ round headlight. The Challenger doesn’t have any and the Mustang does have the Mustang logo but that is required. The point is when you see a Camaro you’re probably looking at the tail end as it blows by. If anything the SS logo should be tucked in the headlight grill like the 1968+ models.
I would be very surprised if they don’t bump up HP a little to outdo the Mustang. If not that would give Ford another bragging right.
I’m glad some are starting to appreciate it but I still feel it’s absolutely terrible in the front.
It’s still hideous. So many extraneous creases, angles, warps, lofts, etc… all without rhyme or reason. What is the point of the fangs/centurion earflaps/plastic mutten chops? How did the black bumper-car bumper get approved? What happened to clean, purposeful lines that will age well, that have a chance to be an enduring, even classic design (e.g. 1967 Camaro, 1973 C/K, 1982 Trans-Am, ). This new GM design language (Silverado included) will look fussy and grotesque from the day they reach the lots.
I do like the refresh.
The Rear is good on the refresh, but I thought the rear fascia on the 2016-18’s was really sleek. 16-18’s rear is gorgeous.
Looks better in this video than in the pictures. However, the bow tie is still throwing me off. I think it would look better in the upper portion of the grill, where is usually resides. The placement in the black bar on the SS models is just too low and throws off the proportions.
I looks better on video than in the press photos, but I still think that the current front end, and even the new LT front end are better. Hopefully it will continue to grow on me.
Looks much better than in the images released earlier. Not too bad. I think there is a tendency to be a bit heavy handed in the editing of those early photos. Doing so doesn’t give a good indication of what the vehicle truly looks like when that is done. I detested the look when just referencing those early images.
todays cars handle + brake better + many go better than cars of years gone by with modern tyres a major contribution, BUT as for style they DO NOT even come close + many models are just “cookie cutters” of other models to increase $$$$$ for the do nothing big wigs + of course the shareholders!! theres just NO CLASS or STYLE anymore IMO!!!

Move the Bowtie and I could deal.
Agree. Put the bow tie back where it belongs.
Personally, I think it definitely looks better in these real world shots compared to the press photos. At least now we can see what it looks like in the real world. For better or worse (I’ll leave that up to you), it’s certainly more eye-catching than the current 6th gen’s design. In my opinion, I think the rear is an improvement. The 3D tail lamp units give it a more modern look (I always felt the current ones looked kind of boring). Curious to see how a black paint job may mask the controversial front-end.
Ok after looking at the vid, I must admit – that while no beauty, or a traditionally “aggressive looker” like the 2016-18; it isn’t ugly.
That said, the bow tie in the middle of the bumper completely ruins the nose of the car. The flow tie should be in the upper grill, or deleted all together.
It has a lot of 3 dimensional hostility in it’s many planes and vertices. Like a helmeted, beast faced, street warrior, smiling or grimacing as it preys upon the lesser vehicles of the streets. I still prefer the original 6th gen face, but this frontend could be made to work.
I really like it. Very aggressive and sinister looking up front. The new dual-element tail lamps are a huge improvement too. The current car looks great, but I think this is a very good refresh.
Looks much better in video than still photos – you can see much more of it!
my dream car hope I will drive soon
Ugh…I tried to post some additional pictures, but it appears I am stuck in pre-approval no man’s land.
At any rate, seeing the car in person is better than the initial photo’s, but personally I don’t like it as much as the 16-18 cars, particularly the 1LE trims.
I also talked with the engineer about potentially opening up the greenhouse (likely a shorter deck) on the 7th gen, and unfortunately he implied that the design team was prioritizing (the chopped) style above better visibility. Personally I think they are loosing more customers to this than they realize. Oh well…here’s hoping it’s slightly improved.
Anyway, thanks for sharing the video.
Nice post with awesome points! Can’t wait for the next one.
Wish they had the gunmetal color when I bought my ’16. Actually, I like the ’19. I don’t know what all the whining about rear visibility is all about. Anything I can’t pick up by turning my neck, I get on the side view mirrors via the lane change system. I haven’t had a problem yet. Thinking about why they’re not selling . . . the ads are very limited and I’m betting that alot of criticism comes from (us) 60+ geezers that are desperately holding on to our memories: “Why can’t they be true to the tradition”? Let’s face it, the young car buying public today has little interest in muscle and most have turned to Asian product because that’s what their parents introduced them to. Autos in general have become a method to get to point A to point B, period. What used to be a right of passage for us is no longer. Some have no interest in cars at all – and choose not to drive. Imagine! Not for me.
Great article! These are the awesome home decor inspiration. I got some great ideas. Thanks a lot for sharing.
