After months of spy photos and speculation, Chevrolet revealed the 2019 Camaro on Monday with an updated design and improved aerodynamics. Additionally, the 2019 Camaro lineup ushers in the Camaro Turbo 1LE.
Design
Chevrolet said the 2019 Camaro’s design is purposeful, and its purpose is to optimize airflow. The new grille details, hood and vents all work to either cool mechanical components or minimize drag and lift. As a dealer source said last week, each model gains a unique front fascia. LS/LT, RS and SS models each wear slightly different looks
The 2019 Camaro SS wears the biggest changes with a blacked-out center section and unique LED accent lights, heat-extractor hood and flowtie badge. Meanwhile, the RS appearance package adds a polished black grille and lower chrome inserts. RS and SS models also gain separate rear fascias with unique diffusers, should the car sport the Dual Mode Exhaust. Dual-element taillights return with a sculpted and outlined look.
The looks certainly differentiate the refreshed model from the current car, which was often criticized for having an appearance all too similar to the last-, fifth-generation model.
Mechanicals
Chevrolet didn’t mention any performance improvements for the 2019 Camaro, but the Camaro SS will now offer GM 10-speed automatic transmission as an option. Other models stick with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission. Camaro SS models equipped with the 10-speed auto will also gain a specific launch control function and line lock for burnouts on-demand.
Technology
Chevrolet has added a few extra tech goodies to the 2019 Camaro. Notably, the Rear Camera Mirror is new. Standard on 2SS and ZL1 models, it offers a wider, less obstructed field of view than a traditional rearview mirror.
The standard rearview camera is also upgraded for high-definition quality and the Performance Data Recorder system is “enhanced,” per Chevy.
And, the Forward Collision Alert system joins Camaro’s roster of available active safety features.
Pricing & Launch
Chevy did not provide details on 2019 Camaro pricing or launch timeframe, but expect the car to launch later this year alongside the updated 2019 Malibu, 2019 Cruze and 2019 Spark.

OMG, what were they thinking!!!????
This looks awful!
I concur! I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I’m quite confident there is a stream of discontent with this latest styling update! I’m at least glad they decided to differentiate the facial design from the previous gen model, but this new design is at least 2 steps backwards!
That being said, I do like the tech update! The 10-speed with the SS model should be stellar!
I’d have to see it in person, but the head on view of the SS looks a bit too much like a Silverado pickup truck — Something about the bow tie splitting the grills doesn’t quite work for cars, yet Chevy keeps trying this look. Look at the Malibu which can’t quite pull it off either.
The old one looks better IMO http://www.chevrolet.com/performance/camaro-sports-car
Someone pulled this up on the computer this morning, and at least 20 other people reacted the same way; myself included.
The silver one and the rear end dont look awful, but the all black front end looks terrible.
The SS’s styling still looks better than the Mustang’s Ford Fusion/catfish body styling.
I will be in the market for a Camaro next year and this might just be the ss I bring home
Of course the new mustang is real eye catcher to so that is in the running also.
Ooh ooh ooh and the new Supra looks great to. I cant believe im saying this but i may need to go to the land of the rising sun for my next performance car.
LOL at the front completely made out of cheap black plastic.
It looks tacky and extremely cheap just as the front of the xt4.
No wonder GM was pushed out of Europe.
Its amazing that you know its “cheap plastic” when you’ve only seen a photo. The black grill on the new Silverado looks incredible in person and the “plastic” does not look cheap.
Funny how the current Camaro handles and accelerates better than many Euro sports cars costing twice its price….
The first thing that came to mind when I looked at the blue one was Silverado.
I like it. I can see a little of Charger in that front clip as well. It’s an improvement for sure over current version. Nice job.
This looks like they took the transformers version of the car and put it in production… Not what I was expecting. Definitely not a fan. Hopefully others like it though.
This may be as low on my list of attractive camaro models as the mid 70s big chrome bumper cars.
it’s unfortunate, cause the front and rear fascia on the 2016-2018 Camaro’s look really good.
It took me a sec to realize what was going on with this redesign but if u pay attention to the details it actually comes together as a very attractive and aggressive design. I like it.
Up until 2002, there was a solution to this-
You could always get the better looking Chevy Camaro, it was called the Pontiac Firebird.
WOOT WOOT!!!!!
DILLY DILLY!
Bravo GM!!! BRAVO!!!!!!
You have done your absolute BEST at showing everyone how to slap something the perfect way with an UGLY STICK.
So everyone that has watched the wretched waste of time called Transformers The Last Knight has known what the SS was going to look like all along? Wow…
An those V6 models? Looks like you took a couple turns with the UGLY STICK on those as well!
Good Form GM… GOOD FORM!!!!
I’m just glad I got my ’17 ZL1.
The ZL1 will keep the same front end at least as the previous years.
This is horrible… Now the Camaro has Elvis sideburns like the Tahoe and SIlverado. Here it almost looks like wrap around fangs. The front end is just Transformers awful. Even the convertible front end is atrocious. Why oh why couldn’t we have gotten the Buick Avista!??? That’s a proper mean & sexy Camaro! This thing has fail written all over it. Grow up Chevy.
not a fan of the front end, it could’ve been better
In a time where car sales are slipping and gas is cheap you would think GM would put their best designs and engineering abilities to use. This thing is awful. It was a mess to begin with (wrong platform use, made to fit the alpha platform for cost cutting purposes. I know people will cry and say im wrong) and itll only get worse. Best solution, all new design. Start over from square one. Its like GM is trying to scare people off
Gmman, Sorry to inform you but this is GM’s best design and engineering. Even Bob Lutz has said It is time to bring in some fresh talent, a new head of design for GM. The current styling is too inbred and just gets more convoluted every year. Look at what Peter Schreyer has done at Hyundai.
Not hating on ya’, but I’m really curious what other platform you think they should have built this car on? How was making it fit the Alpha platform a bad thing or a “cost cutting” thing? Do you realize how much better the Alpha platform is than the outgoing car? Ever read the rave reviews of world class handling and chassis dynamics the Alpha platform has garnered almost unamisouly since the ATS debuted? GM can’t afford (sans Corvette) to have a dedicated “F-Body” platform, nor should they when you have the world class Alpha chassis at your disposal.
There is no way management would have green-lit a standalone chassis, so I would count your lucky stars this isn’t based on the Malibu or something, haha.
ATS sales are terrible, the platform is already dated by the time Camaro got it. Its at their disposal alright, it needs to be disposed of. If you cant make it a true Camaro don’t make it at all. Classic case of engineering running design, always ends terribly. Goes to designers “hey guys! New Camaro has been approved! (Designers cheer) “only thing…. it needs to fit these dimensions” (designers boo).
Im sorry but that makes no sense at all. As Jonny B said, and he was absolutely correct, the Alpha platform is fantastic and has been unanimously touted as the best chassis in its class by every single car reviewer since its introduction. That makes it better than BMW and Mercedes. So what in the world is wrong with having the Camaro based on a platform that is better than the almighty M4 at a fraction of the cost?
As for the ATS, the sales are bad because Americans still falsely believe if its not made in Germany or Japan its not worth buying. Well, that and the packaging and marketing for the ATS has been atrocious… that is something GM did get wrong. This new Camaro is not wrong, and don’t knock the looks until you have actually seen it. People have bashed the black faced Silverado also, but in person it is stunning.
Well said. The driving and handling dynamics of the Alpha platform are stellar. I believe it was Johnny Lieberman from Motor Trend who touted the benefits of the Alpha platform for Camaro, and then said about the S550 Mustang “is like driving sitting on a stack of phone books on a waterbed.” MT also rated the Camaro SS better than the BMW M4.
With that said people still complain about the Camaro which is ridiculous
Are you saying the Camaro should have stayed on Zeta ? Talk about an outdated platform.
I’ve seen a few other pics of the car and it’s actually a decent looking car. not exactly what i was expecting but it’s not terrible. It is a departure from the beautiful camaro we have today but after the initial shock it’s still a cool looking car. Was hoping it would have more power than the current generation (maybe 480 hp/480 tq) but whatever. I want to see it in other colors so i can make a better decision but the blue is nice. I’d still buy it
Too busy…UGH!
Since various years ago, the GM Camaros was the “same” cars exhibited in the TransFormers Saga; how good said our partner; Skeptical.
The same logic applied to Corvette.
Regards from Spain friends!!
I wish the C8 doesn’t get all these Chevy character lines in the design. Is it just me or do you see a lot of Silverado trail boss in that front end of the SS model. Doesn’t look horrible but I really like the clean design of the 16-18.
I’ve been defending the Camaro a lot recently. I don’t think I can anymore, this update is gross.
What the f**k is this?!?
Ugly for a few seconds but not bad after that, aggressive. Can’t say it looks like a 2010 model for sure or better no 4/6 cly guy claim they have a V8 anymore. With more affordable selections it should sell better
A lot of car manufacturers are now going for this Black-Out wide open grill concept for their new front end design, first Toyota with it’s new Canary, then Lexus and even Ford with it’s latest Mustang, a new trend or a sure sign that the summers are getting hotter than they have been in the past. I can adapt overtime to this new design and expect that it will do well for those who aren’t looking for the play-it-safe type of approach when it comes to design updates.
Actually for once it was an American company that started it, Dodge, with the Charger. Then the Civic was leaked confirming they would copy the Charger, and it all went downhill from there.
Actually no, it was Audi. Far far before the Charger.
Mitsubishi did theirs earlier than the Charger as well, the MItsubishi Lancer Evolution X.
ED WELBURN COME BACKKKKK!!!!!
Lol….Bob Lutz also!
Can’t say I’m a fan of Chevys recent refreshes and this is included. Will they ever learn how to correctly place the bow tie on the front end? It should be on the upper grill
After seeing this and the recent updates to the Malibu and Cruze I can say I do not like the new Chief designer’s style(at least for Chevy). Even the front on the silver convertible is bad. It looks like a mustang grill ( not saying the mustang is ugly). I do like the rear though.
I am now scared to see the monstrosity that this man will style to be the c8!
They both would have to deal, with aero. It would look something like this. Every manufacture going to have deal with it, there is nothing wrong with Chevrolet styling
GM lost the hand in design. First the XT4, Spark, now this.
Admittedly I like the outgoing design better but I feel like this one will definitely grow on me after seeing other photos posted on motor authority. The top down perspective of the SS with the heat extractor in the hood looks especially mean.
I think this refresh will grow on people…Just like the MCE for the Mustang did. However, I get the impression that Chevy changed the look of the Camaro just for the sake of changing it. Like they weren’t really interested in improving the looks of the Camaro at all. Let’s face it, they could have done much better. Looks like Simcoe failed his first test.
I could be wrong. Maybe this will jump start Camaro sales after all. Stranger things have happened.
Everyone on the Chevrolet Camaro refresh team should get their termination notices because a single word comes to mind to describe the 2019 Camaro, hideous; they’ve essentially made the Camaro look uglier as the current 2018 looks lightyears better as GM’s Board of Directors should consider firing their new VP of Design Michael Simcoe and maybe Mary Barra needs a long vacation as Chevrolet has essentially given the pony market to Ford’s Mustang.
U G L Y !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
paint the front middle the same body color and get rid of those disco drl plus change the tail lamps to a solid red
People are hopeless, what shape do you want these car’s to be, square? rectangular?
Put a Lexus & a MY19 Silverado Trailboss’s fascia in a blender and this is what happens…GM, there’s still time…Shut everyone including myself the F up by giving the base SS 500hp…
Jesus H what have they done…. It looks like a Camaro mated with an Equinox. I thought the C7 taillights were bad but THIS…. There’s going to be a run on 2018s…
With the gray one, the face doesn’t fit the body. And It’s not what I would call very sporty looking.
The blue one went Lexus Predator but couldn’t quite pull it off. It’s too flat… not enough shape to it. The black bar looks too much like a bumper that was added on at the end. The prominent bowtie also looks not like something that was designed in from the start, but like something that was just attached at the end. The accent lights don’t tie in with the design–they’re just “there.” Corner fog lights (if we can call them that) don’t compliment anything. The bulge in the hood doesn’t tie in with the front–wasted opportunity. The pic gives the impression that there’s too much ground clearance up front. The taillights seem a bit overpowering and I’m not quite sure they fit the overall look.
About the nicest way I can put this is that the refreshes were seeing here look forced.
PAY ATTENTION to these comments GM! I’m a diehard GM guy with what I consider to be immaculate taste in cars (lol) but I’m very disappointed with the design direction the Camaro has underwent. It looks alright at best. We need more input on design before you guys put something this unappealing into production again. I hope the 7th gen Camaro looks good… I’ve given up on Gen 6. If I ever buy one it will be pre facelifted. Sorry guys, better luck next time. Try harder…
They should make a wagon version??
Gm, there is nothing wrong with these Camaro upgrade.
The front of the LT and RS look good, but the SS is UGLY…looks like a Toyota Camry…UGLYYYYYY !!
The LT and RS look good, but the SS is UGLY, looks like a Toyota Camry…UUGLYYYYYYY !!!
Yikes!
Two words: “Horrible” and “Horrible”.
I actually really like the new styling. It looks aggressive and I think it looks a lot more interesting than the pre-refresh.
I like the styling . I may buy one.
Not sure I like this front end treatment, will it grow on me? Maybe! Will others embrace it? Probably! Will it be good for the Camaro going forward? Sure (maybe)!
If wasn’t looking forward to the mid-engine Corvette as much as I am, I would be looking forward to the gen7 Camaro!
I was afraid GM was really going to improve on the looks of the current model (which isn’t so bad), but luckily they didn’t so I don’t have to open my wallet. I do not like the new front or rear design. I’m afraid Ed Welburn’s replacement Mike Simcoe is involved with the new GM designs being the Global Design Chief, and I read where he has had some involvement in past with some of the worst looking cars of all time- Daewoo, Suzuki, Subaru, and Isuzu. Not sure how much he is involved in the Camaro, but I don’t care for it or the designs of some of the other GM vehicles coming out (2019 Malibu, 2019 Silverado, Bolt, etc.).
I’ll have to see it in person but initial impression, it’s not exactly pretty.
It’s certainly unconventional, but that also makes it fresh. I like it. The only thing I’d do is add a black out kit to the bowtie so it blends into the rest of the bumper.
You know it sucks when this late in the day the usual defenders of anything GM throws our way are not yet here defending this! The only thing here worthwhile is the addition of the 10 speed auto on the SS…but man the front is cartoonish! And the rear lights?? Updates of both this and 2019 Mustang are not very good at all!
I’ll keep my 2012 Mustang GT Premium or look for a lightly used CPO ZL1 or GT350.
this actually looks really good if you look at it in certain angles.
Rear-end: gorgeous
side: bold
front: aggressive
top down: exotic
all those views dont connect well with the isometric view where they all meet. unfortunately most of these images are in the isometric angle. go to the chevy website and look at different colors and angles and then remember that much of the design was to improve aerodynamics and function. i do wish the front would be a bit longer and curve down more for a more traditional muscly look, but it does have a massive jet intake feel now.
One of the reasons I have always liked GM Authority is because the comments typically aren’t overrun by fanboys who enjoy bashing something for the sake of picking a side. Seems the new Camaro has either attracted a lot of those fanboys from other sites or people have decided that a few (literally just a FEW) photos is enough to make a final decision about the appearance of the new Camaro.
Im sure the same people who bashed the black faced Silverado are hating on the Camaro. I saw the new Silverado in the Renaissance Center lobby and it is stunning in person. It is bold but it is well done and does not look cheap at all. I have a feeling the Camaro will be the same.
So unless you are just a hater because you enjoy being a hater, take a breath and then save your knee-jerk IT SUCKS opinion until you have actually laid eyes on it.
It looks good.
Put the camo back on please! The SS front looks like shite, the RS is uglified but still better. Rear end is acceptable.
Challenger is still looking like the best out of the muscle cars. Chevy went to drastic with this design change, the lead designer should be removed this car already needs a nip tuck for 2020.
You can believe that and you would be wrong!
Yesterday I was like ‘OMG, what did they do to the front and back’ but today I’m like ‘It’s not actually that bad after all’. Tomorrow I might feel like ‘I actually start to like it’. This just proves that the new design is polarizing and one should not judge it on day one.
In my view the new camaro looks differ greatly depending on the angle how the photo was taken. The lower the angle the better the car looks. Then again the press photo about the silver convertible is making the car look bit chubby (personal opinion) – other shots from the same car look way better. I think that the red turbo 1LE in the press photo looks sweet.
Me: “Chevrolet couldn’t possibly botch the 2019 refresh like they did with the 2014. It’ll be a tall order to top that mistake!”
Chevrolet Design Team: “Hold our beers.”
Is this a late April Fools joke? An epic troll? Chevrolet absolutely BLEW IT with this refresh. They have conceded defeat to Ford and Dodge. I can’t imagine this refresh will boost sales. Incentives would have to be through the roof to see any kind of noteworthy gain. I wouldn’t be surprised if MY2018 sales increase as people try to scoop up the last of the attractive models.
Ford’s 2018 Mustang refresh wasn’t a home run, but that thing is STUNNING in comparison to what Chevrolet has come up with here. Maybe this thing will look half-decent in certain colors, and by certain colors I mean BLACK EVERYTHING to conceal as much of the design as possible, but this is, without a doubt, NOT the design Chevrolet needed to boost sales of the 6th Gen Camaro.
I can see the first change is to blackout the chrome bowtie. It should have been placed on the upper grille.
