The Chevrolet Camaro will have fresh competition from the Toyota Supra when it arrives next year. The automaker itself announced the next-generation Supra will debut in production form in early 2019 on its official Great Britain Twitter account.
We may even see it debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show, where we also might see the mid-engine C8 Corvette. If so, the next show is poised to be a big one.
Toyota previewed the next-generation Supra with the Gazoo Racing Supra race car concept at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show this week. Strip away the race-ready body panels, diffuser and giant rear spoiler, and we’re looking at the production car.
We don’t know exactly how much power the Supra will push, but it will feature a turbocharged inline-six engine. The Japanese automaker partnered with BMW on the project, and we could see an M-division engine find its way to the Supra. It will certainly have something to say about the Chevrolet Camaro SS.

Not really a Camaro Competitor. It is like the Nissan 350 That was a sporty car but not a real head to head competitor for the Camaro or Mustang.
Also it will have to rely on BMW to share cost and global sales to hold enough volume in a market where all coupes are struggling.
I am sure it will be a nice car but even like past Supra models not a Camaro competitor.
The Mustang doesn’t even compete with the Camaro anymore.
@vorg Which is the better, in your opionion?
It’s got all-BMW in it and it’s built by Magna-Steyr in Austria. Exactly how are they gonna get it here at Camaro prices? if they can do it with Toyota purchasing power, then the Camaro better lighten-up, eh Al?
The Japanese have failed in their sports car dreams. There cars, like the 350Z, just fizzle out with no demand. There is a reason Toyota had to have BMW design and build this with them – they don’t have the expertise as they are better suited for building appliances for the masses.
Will we hear about this car in 3 years?
i hope this supra/z4 turns out to be a huge success.
if it shows that collaboration is a viable path for sports cars, that would be great.
i’d love to see gm/honda team up on a fiero/baby nsx. lightweight, mid-engine, 300hp, hybrid(?) and sexy as can be for about $40K.
These deals are the only economical way to build low volume cheaper sports cars. It is not the first.
The Mazda and Fiat is will documented. Mazda shows how to do it and Fiat shows how to screw it up.
GM is large enough it can share the platform internally. But they need to move the Camaro more globally. Sales in this country are just no there for coupes and global sales help keep a car viable and profitable,
Why does this keep getting compared to the Camaro? Its going to be more expensive, a 2 seater, way uglier and probably slower too……
Its very UGLY we all knew it would be 100% GARBAGE toyota is TRASH
With the MY19 Camaro getting refreshed and the refreshed MY18 10-speed auto Mustang able to do the 0-60 in under 4.0 seconds, while it’s not impossible for the Supra’s 300hp engine to get to 4.0 seconds, it’s certainly incredibly difficult to so while remaining somewhat affordable…
The Supra in 300hp guise is NOT a Camaro SS competitor, yet it could be a 2.0T or 3.6 V6 Camaro competitor…
Hmm… Probally won’t be up to the Camaro, but the as was pretty neat.
In 1996 the Supra cost($40,000) about 10% more then a Corvette($37,000).
Toyota fielding a race car in preview of the new upcoming Supra, would lead to speculation that it will be high on performance, especially with today’s Pony cars being so capable. That should lead one to extrapolate that the new Supra will offer performance in abundance to somewhat separate itself from the pony cars. There may be a base engine, but an ‘M’ style engine will be on the order books and the price point will reflect that. Figure a base Supra at around $50,000 And go up from there.
But, then there is the RC 350 ‘F’ Sport @ $65,000, the Supra will have to be at a price point well below the ‘F’-Sport which supports the $50-$55g’s pricing . But Toyota’s experience with the last iteration’s pricing, might lead it to change its business model for the new generation, pricing it more in line with the SS/GT price points.
The Supra has always played in a gray area where GM never was. It was kind of the poor mans 944 Turbo in the 80’s and it went a little more upscale in the later years before it vanished. But it never was head to head with anything at GM.
Price wise it was closer to the Corvette but it was never the same performance wise.
I expect this coupe to be like many other sports cars from japan. It will come out and last a few years and then it will go away to come back at a later time.
Most sports cars out side the Corvette, 911 and Miata have had very long lives. most go 5-12 years and they vanish. The market for many of these cars are limited. They are cars that are often a 3rd car that is a low mile weekend toy and once the target market buys them they drop in sales to the point it is hard to justify the development cost to replace them.
The company takes a decade off and then brings it back to a new hungry group of buyers.
This Supra will last 5-10 years and vanish.
I am wondering how long the GTR4 will last. Sales are way down and globally can they justify the investment to continue?
The Corvette is lucky as it has a solid base but even it has come close to being killed a few times. They too need to grow globally. The Miata had to move to platform sharing but they are hanging on.
Even the NSX after sales drop Honda will have to weigh the cost to replace it with the number of cars they could sell when it is time to update it. The last time they killed it for a while to bring it back.
This is why most sports cars are so expensive. They pay for themselves at low volume then and they can afford to update often. But at the low end low to no profits and hard to maintain volumes make their lives short.
The MR2 died two time. The Fiero had it gone to the planned second gen would not have lasted more than 5 more years. The RX7 dead. RX8 dead. 280Z dead, 300Z dead. Solstice, Sky dead. etc.
Aaannnnndddd they’re burning daylight
Good luck with that I’ll see you at the finish line!
Why write up a Supra as a Camaro competitor? That’s comparing apples to peanuts. I grew up (teen) in the age of the 2nd Gen and remembered the first supra’s well. They were never competitors. The supra was a Japanese offering above the wallet capability of the average 20-25 year old. By the time it became cool? It was way above the cost of a Z28. In 1980 the supra pushed past 40k!! The 1980 Z28? 7495. Need i say more?
Stop comparing this to the Camaro. The new Supra will be 100% sourced from BMW and built by a subcontractor. There is no way in hell this thing will have a starting price of less than $40,000. This will without a doubt be a Corvette competitor.
And the most comical thing about this pretender- it won’t be offered with a stick as reported in a recent online article. I honestly don’t know what it’s intended competition will be.
