General Motors U.S. Sales Decrease 6.9 Percent To 220,905 Units In February 2018

General Motors Company reported 220,905 new vehicle deliveries for February 2018 in the U.S. market, a 6.9 percent decrease compared to February 2017. Sales increased at Cadillac and Buick while decreasing at Chevrolet and GMC.

The automaker notes that February 2017 was an exceptionally strong month. In fact, the automaker had record sales of crossovers, large SUVs and pickups in February 2017 and the light vehicle SAAR (Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate) was 17.5 million units, compared with about 17.1 million on March 1, 2018.

“Consumer confidence is at its highest level since 2000, the economy is strong, our newest products are selling very well and we have successfully managed the transition to the 2018 model year far better than most of our competitors,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president, Sales Operations. “Customer demand, GM’s new products and upcoming launches are in perfect tune.”

Much of the gain was in full-size pickup trucks, underscoring the strength of the U.S. economy. Small business deliveries also helped drive sharply higher sales of large vans.

Average Transaction Prices (ATPs) & Incentive Spending:

  • GM’s February incentive spending as a percentage of ATP was 13.2 percent, down 1.7 percentage points. Incentive spending for GM was down more than $500 per vehicle, while the industry average was down $64. About half of major automakers increased spending.

  1. Well, about what you would expect. Glad to see the new Regal doing pretty well; wish the new Enclave was doing even better.

But the Impala…ooof. I’m a backer of that car, but those numbers show GM isn’t. They are terrible. If this keeps up (or down, such as it is), it doesn’t look like the car will be around when I plan on considering it when I’m in the market in 2-3 years.

Also, the Bolt/Volt mix looks like it has hit its peak. Hopefully Buick will have its more upscale hatchback/small CUV BEV officially unveiled soon.

  2. I’m proud to say (if it wasn’t already obvious) that the XTS is the second best selling Cadillac model. What really surprised me though, is that the ATS is selling as well as it is. It seems that every automotive writer is, or has bashed the car for its age, yet its selling well (for Cadillac).
