The GM Authority Take

Impala sales continued their free fall in February, following a dismal January and a substantial drop in December. In fact, the Impala posted the biggest percentage out of all vehicles still in production in the segment.

The performance pushed the Impala to fourth place in the segment during the month by sales volume, behind the Dodge Charger in first place (see Dodge Charger sales), Chrysler 300 in second (see Chrysler 300 sales) and the Nissan Maxima in third. The Impala outsold the Toyota Avalon, which is all-new for the 2019 model year, as well as the Ford Taurus (see Ford Taurus sales) and the Kia Cadenza. The Hyundai Azera and Volkswagen CC brought up the last two spots, as both models have been discontinued.

We attribute the Impala’s dismal February sales performance to:

  • The ongoing shift in consumer buying patterns that favor crossovers over sedans
  • Attractive incentives for the Toyota Avalon ahead of the launch of the all-new 2019 model, which appears to be a highly-competitive product that has generated a lot of consumer interest since its debut
  • Aggressive sales tactics by Kia to move the Cadenza
  • The Impala becoming less competitive in the face of newer offerings; the current Impala was introduced for the 2014 model year

Overall, the first two months of 2018 are not looking good for the Impala, minimizing hope that the model would remain past the current generation.

  • We have included the Nissan Maxima and the discontinued Volkswagen CC in the report, since both models carry similar pricing structures to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment. However, the Maxima and CC are not full-size sedans. Instead, they are midsize sedans with a greater amount of premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively.

The full-size mainstream sedan segment contracted 18 percent in February, which is representative of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics in which buyers favor CUVs and SUVs over other model types, with sedan sales suffering the most. The segment contracted 19 percent during the first two months of 2018.

About Chevrolet Impala

2015 Chevrolet Impala Blackout Concept - SEMA 2014 02

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.

Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily entended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales volume of the current model.

Going forward, it is unclear whether the Impala will live on to see a next, 11th generation, as comments by GM executives have left the vehicle’s future in limbo, mostly as a result of a change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics that is beginning to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans.

The Chevrolet Impala is built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory in Michigan operated by GM USA as well as the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada.

  1. Wow what happened? I sure hope this doesn’t continue. I want a 2019 Impala refresh dangit.

    1. When is the last time you saw Chevy advertise this car? I haven’t since 2014. I’m hoping for a refresh too

  2. A friend of mine owns one and it is a great car , inside and out . It has almost every safety feature out there and the quality of the interior in my opinion is just as good as a base XTS .
GM’s reluctance to even advertise the car baffles me . Even national commercials for Chevrolet will show nothing of the car .
The sales numbers aren’t bad for a car that GM seems to want no one to know about . It’s going to be interesting to see what will happen to Impala , maybe a great car at the wrong time . Heavy fleet sales may be it’s demise .

    1. “interior in my opinion is just as good as a base XTS .”

      Yeah.. no.

Anyhow, the Impala is a nice car, but it’s problem is the new Malibu is similar looking (maybe even better at angles) and seriously undercutting it these days.

  3. Make it RWD and AWD with performance versions, make the Impala cool again! Look at the Charger and 300 sales if you don’t believe me. I’m a GM guy that bought a Charger because I wanted a car that my family fit in and was cool. By the way the chassis under the FCA twins is older and sells better.

    1. “By the way the chassis under the FCA twins is older and sells better.”

It’s older so FCA can undercut everyone else in the market with a heavily discounted car. The old Ford Ranger sold for the exact same reason because it cost Ford nothing to make one. Same deal with the Express/Savanna, and any other vehicle on sale today who’s platform/chassis is older than 8 years old.

    2. Its still an FCA and the reliability that they are known for.

  4. In desperate need of a refresh. Offer all wheel drive,9 speed auto standard across the board and a performance version. Spruce up the interior and add more color choices and start advertising it and watch the sales grow. I know it’s a 4 door sedan which seem to be going out of style right now but a little help from GM could go a long way in makeing the Impala a sale success.

    1. yeah – 5 years body style needs a refresh. every other chevy looks like a mini impala (cruze, malibu)

  5. Keep this body style and put a rear wheel drive/all wheel drive chassis under it and watch the sales improve.
Offer a complete model line, including base model rear wheel drive, an optional all wheel drive intermediate model, and a performance model with rear and or all wheel drive. It will cover all needs, including replacing the SS. We wouldn’t have needed Holden to make us a true rear wheel drive sedan and certainly it could serve as a better replacement than the front drive based Buick Regal GS built in Europe. The base model could cover fleet sales and the all wheel drive mid to high end model to round out the line for most personal needs.

  6. If the SS didn’t sell, how is a RWD drive of this car going to sell?

    It’s not a sports car.

And you can’t compete with a car that’s been discontinued (SS).

  7. For one the Impala is the forgotten vehicle in GM line up of vehicles. The Impala has won many awards like Kelly Blue Book best buy award 4 years in a row. GM marketing doesn’t even market the Impala. They seem to be spending all the ad money on trucks, Buick’s and Cadillac’s. GM dealers don’t advertise it either.. My first new vehicle was a 1959 Impala and now have a 2016 by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. With a smarter marketing they should be selling 10.000 a month. Wake up GM
used the Impala awards and put a few dollars on the hood

  8. It seems that someone at GM decided to just let the Impala go in favor of retaining a clearly inferior Malibu. We have a 2018 Equinox Premiere which is a neat vehicle but nearly as comfortable or responsive as the Impala. The Impala is clearly superior in my opinion to the Malibu, but GM no longer advertises or promotes the Impala.

We have had 3 of the series 10 Impalas and one series 9. One of the series 10 vehicles was rear ended by a moving van running at about 25-30 MPH while I was stopped at red light. The car was a total loss due to structural damage, but I only had a minor cut on my forehead (bled a lot, but was minor really). The body shop said that the Impala performed as designed in absorbing the shock and protecting me. People often comment to me about how modern and trim the Impala appears. I think this Impala is the best Chevrolet style since the 1957 Chevrolet.

I regret that the car makers have discontinued CD Players in their cars. Fortunately one of the trim packages available in certain 2018 Impalas still offers the CD player.

We also need a SUV option between size of the Equinox and the Traverse.

  9. General Motors spends 0 on advertising what is not to suspect. Truth be known that’s probably the best car and Chevrolet’s lineup.

  10. For JWL… I switched to an FCA vehicle over a year ago and have 10,000 mi on it with no issues. My prior three GM vehicles, including 2012 GMC Sierra, 2014 GMC Sierra, and a 2015 GMC Yukon all had unexplained and unresolved driveline issues…hard shifting, vibrations, shuddering…all unacceptable for vehicles costing over$45,000.
Do yourself a favor and test drive a FCA product with a bullet proof Hemi and ZF designed transmission that engages and shifts flawlessly.
come on now….Typical bad marketing by GM. SS was a limited production specialty vehicle. It is considered a sport sedan not sports car. Ever hear of an E39 BMW? Check it out to learn what Holden was targeting when they designed and built the SS. If you prefer not to educate yourself, the E39 is considered one of best production sport sedans ever built. Only the Holden division had the vision for the potential of a car like this, not GM USA. You might, also, want to check out resale values for SS’s.

  11. This continues GM’s long running tradition of letting products get long in the tooth to avoid spending money on updates (current Impala, second-gen Equinox, first-gen Terrain, Enclave/Acadia/Traverse, first-gen Cruze to name a few). These days the competition is doing mid-cycle updates every two-three years, while GM just lets their products get old and forgettable. Even the Malibu and Cruze could have used an update for 2018.
