The GM Authority Take

Cruze sales continued their unfavorable trend in February, with the model seeing one of the highest year-over-year slumps in its segment during the month.

The performance retains the Cruze in fifth place in its competitive set in terms of U.S. February sales volume, behind the Honda Civic in first, Toyota Corolla in second, Nissan Sentra in third and Hyundai Elantra in fourth. The Cruze outsold the remaining segment contenders including the Ford Focus, Kia Forte, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Jetta and Golf (which accounted for a combined 7,979 sales), Mitsubishi Lancer, Fiat 500L, and the now-discontinued Dodge Dart.

We attribute the Cruze’s ongoing sales slump to the following factors:

  1. An ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics that favors crossover utility vehicles at the expense of other vehicle types like sedans and hatchbacks
  2. An extremely strong launch for and market reaction to the new Honda Civic and Subaru Impreza
  3. Aggressive sales tactics for Nissan Sentra and Hyundai Elantra, a circumstance that we believe is led by high incentives and fleet sales
  4. Product-related issues for the Cruze, including it not being a particularly standout product in a very competitive segment. Specifically, the model doesn’t have much that differentiates it from well-established and highly-attractive rivals from Japan and Korea. In addition, the Cruze has various other shortcomings, such as not offering all-wheel-drive or a high-performance variant, while also being the only model in its competitive set that can not be equipped with a roof rack without drilling into the vehicle’s roof

About Chevrolet Cruze

The Chevrolet Cruze is a range of compact passenger cars currently consisting of a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback. It slots above the Chevrolet Spark city car and subcompact Chevrolet Sonic and below the midsize Chevrolet Malibu and full-size Chevrolet Impala.

The current model was introduced for the 2016 model year and represents the second generation of the Cruze nameplate. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Volt and Buick Verano (in China). The second-generation Cruze received a midcycle enhancement, otherwise known as a facelift, refresh or update, for the 2019 model year that consists of updated exterior styling, a new Chevrolet infotainment system, and new interior colors.

Compared to its first-generation predecessor, the second-gen model is an all-new vehicle that is slightly larger, sleeker and more modern. The first-generation Cruze family was produced in sedan, hatchback, and wagon body styles, but only the sedan was available in North America. By comparison, the second-generation model is available as a sedan and hatchback. Though a wagon variant of the second-gen model was never produced, the hatchback model was made available in North America.

The Chevrolet Cruze is produced across the following four GM plants globally:

  • GM Lordstown plant in Lordstown, Ohio, USA assembling the Cruze sedan for North America
  • GM Ramos plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico assembling the Cruze hatch for North America
  • GM Rosario plant in Argentina assembling the Cruze sedan and Cruze hatch (called Cruze6) for Latin America
  • GM Gunsan plant in South Korea for Eurasia (the facility has been shuttered)
  • GM Norsom II plant in China assembling the Cruze sedan and Cruze hatchback for all markets
  • GM Hanoi plant in Vietnam

  1. GM needs to fix Chevy interiors. They are NOT class competitive in todays’ market. The Cruze especially needs a lot of updating ASAP.
Also, how about a Hot Hatch SS with 300 HP and AWD with Brembo brakes and an Quad exhaust. GM has all the parts so just gt it done.
Bring some excitement to the people.

  2. GM needs to put bigger rims on all Cruze models. Right now, the base model looks like an armadillo.

    1. They do not need to be bigger just better looking on lower trims. 18″ wheels on the RS models is plenty big enough

    2. Don’t get me started on the Cruze wheel mess. Base models with the 15″ plastic wheel covers and all LT models with the still-small and flanged 16″ wheels (with that tacky tacked-on weight balance that NObody in the industry still uses) look ridiculously cheap. LT models with the RS package get the nice body kit, but no wheel upgrade. It looks like a mistake.

Meanwhile, the competition offers hot looks with sport packages, including wheel upgrades, at the lower end of their price structure. You can’t even get 17″ wheels unless you upgrade to a Premier model and have to pay the ridiculously high prices ($1495 for 17″, $1995 for 18″) for the optional wheels Chevy offers.

The Cruze packaging and option pricing is ridiculous and I think the sedan is the dumpiest looking vehicle in its class. I have a Premier Hatchback w/RS, which I think looks terrific. Otherwise, all Cruze models just look cheap.

  3. Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen once famously said of not wanting any Cadillac model to sell as well as the Chevrolet Cruze because de Nysschen didn’t want every street to have a multiple Cadillac ATS or CTS parked on the street and give the impression of being a Cadillac parking lot; this logic is flawed as it’s the job of any President to want the vehicles in his company to be as popular as possible as Toyota’s President doesn’t mind that their Camry model sold 30.865 units in FEB 2018.

  4. i suspect reliability or lack of contributes. with several turbo engines having Big issues + poor dealership support while said issues render the car unusable!!!

    Reply
    1. Yeah, I’ve reading several issues with misfire in cilinder 1, leading to bad piston. Engine 1.4 turbo in Cruzes and 1.5 turbo in Malibus. These are not helping GM.

      Reply
      1. They have been making turbo engines for years. How do they keep screwing up like this? Every other company is making 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and 2.0T engines and not having these issues. And they are getting far more than 160 lame HP out of there 1.5T displacements. They should have kept the 2.5 that the current Impala uses and the previous Malibu had tied to a 9 speed and or an eAssist setup. That would give good reliable power and surprising MPG.

  5. You can build a SB V8 engine for 60+ year’s and still have problem’s. Correct those problem’s on these engine’s, and make shore that hasn’t or want happen again.
