The GM Authority Take
February represented the ATS’ second year-over-year sales increase after 16 months of decreases, a circumstance we suspect was caused by a significant push to sell the vehicle at both retail and fleet. To note, Cadillac experienced a 6.8 percent increase in retail deliveries and 71 percent increase in fleet sales during the month. In fact, the ATS’ 38 February percent growth rate bucked the segment’s 2 percent decrease in overall sales volume.
The ATS family finished the month in seventh place in terms of cumulative sales volume in its segment, behind BMW 3/4 series in first place with a cumulative 6,379 sales, Mercedes-Benz C-Class in second with 3,947 deliveries, Infiniti Q50/Q60 in third with a cumulative 4,759 deliveries, Audi A4/A5 family in fourth with a cumulative 4,219 sales, Acura TLX in fifth with 2,794 deliveries and the Lexus IS/RC in sixth with a cumulative 1,710 deliveries. The ATS finished ahead of the Volvo 60 series in eighth, which had 1,004 cumulative deliveries, and the Alfa Romeo Giulia, which came in last (ninth) place with 853 deliveries, despite the Alfa Romeo brand’s limited recognition and a tiny retail network in the country.
Despite the uptick in February, we wouldn’t expect ATS sales to continue increasing unless Cadillac offers notable incentives or sells the model heavily into fleets. In fact, newer, more modern, and more competitive rivals outperformed the ATS by storm during the 2017 calendar year at the expense of the ATS due to the following three reasons:
- The age of the current model: though the ATS is a solid car, it is also the oldest in its segment, and that age shows when the vehicle is stacked against its most direct rivals. The product’s negative attributes also include various refinement items and details, such as the cabin and the powertrain (specifically the 2.0L Turbo LTG engine and 8-speed transmission). The vehicle does, however, excel in terms of driving dynamics, in-vehicle technology, and safety.
- A lack of marketing support: the ATS sees extremely little advertising from Cadillac, thereby decreasing awareness of the model and negatively impacting its performance for potential new customers.
- The inability to retain existing ATS owners: Cadillac was somewhat successful in getting new customers to try the ATS, but has not been as successful in retaining these customers for another ATS lease or purchase… either as a result of product-related reasons or being out-marketed by competitors, with customers switching to rival luxury brands in the segment.
Thus, a complete replacement of the ATS is the only tangible solution to improve Cadillac’s position in this segment. See section entitled Replacement below for complete details on the ATS’ upcoming replacement.

About Cadillac ATS

Cadillac ATS family
The Cadillac ATS is a range of compact luxury cars that includes the ATS Sedan, ATS Coupe, and high-performance ATS-V variants of each model. The vehicle slots under the midsize Cadillac CTS and a full-size Cadillac CT6.
Currently in its first generation, the ATS was introduced for the 2013 model year. The vehicle is based on the regular-length wheelbase variant of the GM Alpha platform. A longer variant of the same architecture underpins the third-generation Cadillac CTS and sixth-generation Chevrolet Camaro.
For the 2018 model year, the ATS gets a new exterior color, an automatic heated steering wheel, the all-new CUE 3.0 infotainment system, and the deletion of several features such as the Carbon Black Package, and more.
For North American markets, the Cadillac ATS is built exclusively at the GM Lansing Grand River factory in Michigan operated by GM USA. For the Chinese market, the ATS is sold exclusively as an extended wheelbase model called the ATS-L. That model is built at the Jinqiao South factory operated by GM China.
Cadillac ATS Replacement
As we have predicted for the last year, the 2018 model year will be the last for the ATS Sedan. The model will be indirectly replaced for either the 2019 or 2020 model years by an entirely new, next-generation model called Cadillac CT5, which will roughly be the size as the current, third-gen CTS priced around the levels of the current ATS. Meanwhile, the ATS Coupe will continue for at least the 2019 model year, or until Cadillac readies a coupe version of the CT5.
Then, a new small Cadillac passenger car will arrive roughly a year later. Called either Cadillac CT4 or Cadillac CT3, the model will be roughly the same size as the current ATS Sedan while being priced at a lower price point than the Cadillac CT5, roughly in the area of the Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
High-performance CT5 V-Sport and CT5-V variants are expected a year or so after the CT5 launches, but it is currently unclear whether the other model (CT4/CT3) will have such variants.

The negative Nellies would be all over this if they were down but up silence ….
Tax credits plus a stupid $279/mo lease with just 1st payment due at signing may have had something to do with it…
Drew says:
March 16, 2018 at 9:26 am
“Sorry to rain on this parade, but a sub-ATS Cadillac sounds like a really bad idea. The ATS itself does not sell very well, never has.”
Spot on. Drew has a very selectionist point of view, founded in his unfounded hate of RWD cars and modern luxury cars in general.
His definition of “selling well” is as subjective as a movie critic reviewing a movie. I wonder what his criteria of “selling well” is… and what metrics the car must meet to “sell well”, or not. Ultimately, to say that the ATS has not or doe le not sell well is subjective BS and is not supported by actual figures.
The reality is that the ATS hasn’t “sold sell” in a few select months… for very important reasons that should not go unmentioned in understanding the market. But overall, the ATS has sold quite well during its life span. This circumstance is even more true when considering that the ATS is Cadilac’s first ever offering in the largest and most competitive segment in automotive luxury.
Moreover, a Cadillac model just needs to sell well enough to make a profit for Cadillac as a division and for parent GM. Obviously, the more they sell, the merrier… but they need to start somewhere in building their business (customer base, presence, awareness) in this segment – and the ATS accomplished just that.
Really hopeful for the CT3, 4 and 5.
Vorg nails Drew. It’s great, but it’s not unexpected…
I’m very interested in seeing what the March sales figures have to say about the ATS. I think it bodes well that even this late in its lifecycle the car still offers driving dynamics that compare favorably to the class leaders (Alfa Giulia and Jaguar XE). The technology is still there too. I don’t think this is about the time it takes for a nameplate to become established, though it might be some of that. I suspect it’s more about Cadillac finding out just what they can charge for their compact executive sedan.
I have been waiting for a 2018 ATS Premium Luxury . The GM website showed it was built and shipped on March 1st. However today my dealer tells me the car is still in Michigan because of a shortage of train cars! Not my first new GM car and I worked for a GM dealer for 39 years. Never heard of a story like this. Does anyone know if it is true and there is a shortage of train cars that that can cause a delay of over 30 days before it leaves the plant?? HELP, any thoughts would be welcomed
I am glad any Cadillac sales # is up. We own a 2014 ATS AWD Performance 2.0T and would not have bought another. We will see when the new XT4 is ready, but with FWD/AWD not sure, and what engine options. We will probably wait until the new CT5 is out and if it feels smaller than the current CTS, and back to the 2 older models. Then what engine options on the CT5. These new Cadillacs need engines and or tunes that GO standard, You seem to get low power standard, better power on an option, and a race car power with the V. I wish Cadillac would just drop that under power standard, and just put a power plant that is worthy of a Cadillac . The 2.0T in this ATS might be ok if tuned better to shift better but if your not going to do it why sell it. And I don’t need a race car V, but if its a Cadillac, I want it to go better than a Chevy Cruze. Maybe the 2018 is better.
Cadillac of China experienced even better sales as Cadillac ATS-L sales increased 67 percent to 4,500 units and it makes me shake my head as why doesn’t Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen import 1,000 ATS-L from China to see how they would sell in the United States as having rear passenger legroom; de Nysschen said Cadillac will be emphasizing performance more with V and Vsport for every model in the Cadillac lineup which means Cadillac needs to consider upgrading the LTG 2.0L DOHC-4v 4-cyl turbo engine by moving to a twin-turbo system with an electric turbocharger for low engine rpm and then a larger turbocharger for engine speed as well as to get more power or they could consider using the 2.7L OP engine being tested for the Chevy Silverado 1500 as it generates 270 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque while getting 35+ mpg.
Wow, 1300 units
That’s right. Almost 1,400 units from the oldest car in its segment, from a brand that is arguably the weakest in terms of overall desirability, and from a product that is in its first generation, thereby one that is still building its customer base and awareness. So yeah, 1,388 units that sells at ATP of $42k is pretty good, I’d say.
Easily the best small sedan I have ever owned. I love that car, especially on the back roads.
“Wow, 1300 units”
It’s not the unit sales, it’s the ATP (average transaction price) that matters.
I know, I was the same way thinking that selling only a few thousand cars a month was a terrible sales result…until I did some rudimentary math. If these were results for a Chevy Equinox, we’d both be in a panic and GM would kill the model before the end of the model year.
