The GM Authority Take
The Buick Regal family finally saw a sales volume increase, its first since April 2017 – just as we had predicted. The growth is directly attributable to sufficient availability of the new, sixth-generation model.
Notably, the Regal Sportback began arriving on dealer lots in December 2017 while the Regal TourX started arriving in January 2018. The Sportback model is highly-competitive in its segment against the Acura TLX, while the Regal TourX ruggedized wagon delivers a unique proposition.
Going forward, we expect Regal deliveries to continue an upward trajectory in March, catching up to and surpassing the TLX, as long as supply allows. The wildcard remains the Kia Stinger, which is coming on strong into the segment. However, we believe that the Stinger’s appeal will be limited given its premium price over a similarly-sized Kia Optima. In fact, pricing for the Kia rear-drive-based sports sedan can easily climb into the $50,000 range.

About Buick Regal
The Buick Regal is a midsize-size premium passenger vehicle line that is currently in its sixth generation and slots above the compact Excelle and Verano (in China) and below the full-size LaCrosse (in North American and in China). The Regal family currently consists of the following models:
- Regal Sportback – a four-door Regal sedan with a liftback trunk
- Regal GS –Â a four-door Regal Sportback with several performance upgrades
- Regal TourX – a five-door ruggedized wagon
Buick revealed the all-new Regal in April 2017 at the New York Auto Show and the vehicles launched for the 2018 model year. The sixth-gen model is based on the GM E2 platform, which also underpins the 2016 and newer Chevrolet Malibu and upcoming Cadillac XT4. The Regal is also sold as the second-generation Opel-Vauxhall Insignia and the NG 2018 Holden Commodore in Australia and New Zealand by GM subsidiary Holden.
Prior to the launch of the sixth-gen model, the fifth-generation Regal was available for a total of seven model years, from 2011 thru 2017. That model rode on the GM Epsilon II platform also shared with the first-gen Opel-Vauxhall Insignia and eighth-generation Malibu.
The sixth-gen Buick Regal is built at the Opel Rüsselsheim plant in Germany for North America and at a Shanghai-GM plant operated by GM China for the Chinese market.

Any chance Buick will use the Avista to create a new generation Rivera? I know this has nothing to do with the Regal but a new Rivera with rear wheel drive and a3.0 TT with about 420 HP would be great.
I’d say the chances of that taking place in today’s envhruoemwnt of huge investments in loss making programs (autonomous and electric) are 0-3%.
Hey Alex
A guy can dream can’t he? lol
What is the sales breakdown between the Regal Sportback and the Regal TourX?
We don’t know and we won’t know until/if Buick decides do share this info.
Can anyone tell me why you can’t get heated rear seats in the 2018 Buick Lacrosse Avenir??
The same reason why you can’t get an automatic heated steering wheel, power folding exterior mirrors, illuminated door sill plates, sueded headliner or real wood trim (despite the last two being offered on the previous gen Lacrosse). GM was CHEAP and cut corners on this model. There is nothing above and beyond about the Lacrosse Avenir to make it stand out. It’s just wears a different tie (grille) and shoes (wheels) from regular Lacrosses.
Just another one of GM’s missteps or GM being cheap. What ever it is it’s a big mistake on their part.
I’ve not seen a single TV commercial for the 2018 Buick Regal and have not seen a printed ad for the 2018 Buick Regal which means people were going to the dealership possibly for another vehicle and decided to take a look at the Regal by chance; imagine if Buick actually tried doing a National TV campaign for the Regal like their ads for the Encore and Enclave (haven’t seen a Envision commercial either as it’s a crazy way to do business).
Imagine if GM actually advertised them, offered more exterior colors and interior color options and made some more safety items std what would happen.
