2020 Ford Shelby GT500 Teased And It Wants A Piece Of The Camaro ZL1

As connectivity, electric cars and self-driving vehicles claim more automotive headlines, we’re happy to know engineering teams inside of Detroit’s Big Three remain committed to utterly bonkers muscle cars. Chevrolet offers the 650-horsepower 2018 Camaro ZL1, Dodge continues to parade around the 840-hp Challenger Demon, and now, Ford wants in with the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500, and it’s looking squarely at the Demon and Camaro with more than 700 horsepower.

Ford Authority reported Thursday on a new teaser image showing the upcoming Shelby GT500, which boasts a chiseled face with a prominent snake sitting in the gaping grille. A previous potential Easter Egg hinted 772 horses could be on tap, which would give it 112 more ponies than the Camaro ZL1.

It’s highly unlikely that Chevrolet will be sitting still, as rumors of an even more powerful Camaro than the ZL1 continue to swirl. We’ve heard rumors of a new DOHC V8 engine coming for a future Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, which only seems verified by mid-engine C8 Corvette powertrain leaks. Information on the Z/28 future has been scarce, but perhaps Chevrolet will have something ready to rain on the GT500’s parade soon enough.

  1. There is more coming.

Also the trick this. Big numbers are great but what only matters is what you can put to the ground and use. That separates the contenders from the pretenders.

Wheelies are fine if all you do is drag race.

  2. “But, the folks at Ford can’t believe Chevrolet isn’t prepping an even more powerful Camaro”

Can someone explain this sentence? Did Ford put out a statement or whoever wrote this is talking out of his ass?

    1. No one likes to hear this dose of reality, it isn’t well advertised, both automakers are pretty well connected and most likely know each others secrets…Think of their collaborative effort between the 9 speed and 10 speed transmissions…A lot of the talented workers between brands are friends with each other…Don’t think that if a 20% raise was put on the table, that many from GM wouldn’t run over to work for Ford…

As long as Al Oppenheiser is the lead, right or wrong, the Camaro will be linked to Nuremberg laps times…By no means am I against that, I believe a more economy priced drag package would sell…One badge, ZL1 could be Nuremberg and the Z28 could be more drag friendly or vice versa…

  3. Ford did announce a hybrid Mustang, so it can have over 400 HP yet get over 40 MPG! That is a better offer than any big-block car, since the newer “supercars” are hybrids.

    1. Its for the regulations but think of those who rent the convertible Mustang at the airport in either Vegas or Hawaii, they can now save $9 on a tank of gas…

  4. If the GT500 wants a piece of the ZL1, then, get on the gas!

    GET IN THE RING!

My guess, it’s got it’s sight’s set on the Demon?

  6. put the LT5 in the ZL1 and redefine the output to 790 or 800 hp and add a new trim with the LT4.

  7. This is why I like Ford and Chevy, they bring two badass track performanced pony cars and add high performance trims so they can go one on one. That’s what I like, can’t wait the GT-500 to go against the ZL1 or maybe a Z/28 Camaro. Not too sure about Dodge, but they might bring something new.

  8. Doesn’t matter, electric cars are way faster with more torque and power. The Tesla Roadster hits 60 mph in under 2 seconds with a speed of at least 250 mph.

    1. Can you say skidpad Duster? Go buy yourself a Tesla Roadster or a P100D Ludicrous and get back to us with your Road coarse times.

Have you seen a single Tesla run anywhere that has turns?

If Detroit didn’t care about handling, or mileage we would still be able to buy BIG BLOCK muscle cars and you would be ignored at the dragstrip with your silence!
