The GM Authority Take
The launch of the all-new 2018 GMC is paying off, as the vehicle is posting noteworthy sales gains in the U.S. (but not in Canada this month). A similar scenario is taking place with the Terrain’s platform mate – the new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox.
But despite its healthy 14 percent January gain in the U.S., the Terrain was outpaced by the segment, which grew 20.5 percent during the month. That places the Terrain in 12th place out of 15 – behind the Nissan Rogue in first place, which is in first because Nissan is combining sales of the compact Rogue with those of the subcompact Rogue Sport, as well as the Toyota RAV4 in second. The Terrain’s platform mate – the Chevy Equinox – was in third, trailing the RAV4 by only 250 units (see Chevy Equinox sales). From there, the Honda CR-V was in fourth and Ford Escape (see Ford Escape sales) in fifth, followed by the Jeep Cherokee (see Jeep Cherokee sales), Mazda CX-5 (see Mazda CX-5 sales), Subaru Forester, Jeep Compass (see Jeep Compass sales), Subaru Crosstrek and Hyundai Tucson. The GMC Terrain outsold the Volkswagen Tiguan (see VW Tiguan sales), as well as the Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander.
We attribute the Terrain’s positive January sales performance to the following three factors:
- An all-new, competitive model that represents an attractive overall product
- Smart incentives to move existing inventory units
- A continuous change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics, where shoppers choose crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) and sport utility vehicles (SUVs) over other vehicle types like sedans
It seems that GMC is managing the Terrain’s launch quite well by keeping a healthy balance of supply, sales volume and incentives, which is in stark contrast to the incentive-rich sales tactics used by some of its direct rivals. We expect Terrain deliveries to continue growing in the coming months as inventory continues to build at the dealer/retail levels.

About GMC Terrain
The GMC Terrain is a compact crossover that currently is GMC’s smallest crossover slotting below the midsize GMC Acadia.
The first-generation Terrain ran from the 2010-2017 model years and was based on the Theta 2 platform. The vehicle was a “tweeter” model that straddled the compact and midsize CUV segments in size. The second-generation Terrain was introduced for the 2018 model year. It rides on the GM D2 platform shared with the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Cruze, and Chevrolet Volt and, unlike its predecessor, is positioned squarely in the compact segment.
The second-generation, 2018 and newer Terrain features an all-new exterior and interior, while being slightly smaller inside and out compared to the outgoing model. It also offers an all-new engine lineup and an all-new lightweight architecture that enables a weight savings of over 400 pounds compared to the first-gen model. As a result, the new Terrain gets better fuel economy while also delivering improvements in ride, handling, packaging, and safety. The 2019 model year sees one new color, various technology updates such as the addition of full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Go, Front Pedestrian Braking, HD Rear Vision Camera, and HD Surround Vision, as well as the introduction of various packages, including the Terrain Black Edition.
The GMC Terrain is built by GM Mexico at the GM San Luis Potosi factory.

I finally saw one of these on a California road. I feared their were DOA.
By the by — Encores and Trax are everywhere now. I saw 3 in one minute the other day… not counting mine.
And Honda HRV’s aren’t that common.
GM built more Equinox inventory before starting to build the new Terrain. Back in the fall, the Equinox factory in Canada was on strike for almost a month. The Mexico factory which builds both models, shifted to building more Equinox models and less of the new Terrain.
Anyway, as inventory builds for the new Terrain, we should see a good jump in monthly sales.
The new Terrain did get many good reviews, and is a sharp looking crossover.
Taste is a tricky thing. I wouldn’t describe this as sharp at all.
GMC has this ‘serious’ ‘masculine’ thing going on. This vehicle doesn’t. It’s rounder in bold yet comical way. Where it would make a cheery little Chevy I do not see a drop of GMC in this.
Perhaps it’s a “hey ladies’ entry at GMC, whereas men are nudged towards the Acadia. If that’s the strategy and their research supports it I hope sales will follow. Otherwise I think it’s an oddly duckling.
(And the poorly designed shift doesn’t help. I’ve seen the Bolt electronic shift. A variant would have been better.)
For a SUV that was intended to be a Pontiac Torrent replacement , the first gen. sold very well and selling an extra year until the second gen. was ready . It was / is a good truck .
I think the strike at the CAMI may have hurt Terrain sales because GM built fewer of them and more Nox’s . So dealership inventory suffered . Now GMC can start to build more Denali’s where the money is and customers interest is at . I think I read where 27-30% of Terrain sales are forecast to be the Denali .
Now with the spring and summer sales coming Terrain may very well climb the sales chart as people start to see more of them on the road and inventory at dealerships has a wider variety of them .
It is an attractive design but I like the last gen better. Also, Equinox is hard to compete with given how the design plays with proportions.
GMC needs to return to its Butch roots or aim to new the American Rover. This Terrain is pretty but a bubble.
“GMC needs to return to its Butch roots or aim to new the American Rover.”
Rover?! That defunct British automaker that spent it’s last years rebadging Honda’s?!
Trust me. GMC has ALWAYS been better than Rover. Even the Brits would agree with that, and GMC isn’t even sold there.
Well the Terrain here in the mid west started slow but th e last two month their numbers have really climbed.
Now the reality is the Terrain is not the volume value leader, it has more standard equipment and some added quality features in trim inside and out. Also it has the Denali model.
This is intended to be a lower volume but higher ATP model.
The l ast version sold about 1/3 the Chevy. It started slow but over each year the volume grew till about the last year. It had a trend opposite the norm.
I was not a fan of the styling here but now that it is on the road I like it.
I expect this will continue to sell well. While not in Nox volumes it will contribute much to the bottom line at GM as it will move more profitable with the higher ATP.
We must always keep the mission of each brand in perspective. Chevy is the volume value brand while GMC is the more up scale profit brand at lower volume.
It’s too bad the interior is still so cheap. The lease on my Equinox LTZ was up, and I wanted something nicer. I was waiting for the XT4 for the past year, but Cadillac is comically behind in getting a compact crossover to market. In the meantime, I decided to check out the new Terrain Denali. Sadly, it’s still the typical low rent GM interior with some aluminum bits added in. The faux wood trim looks like contact paper, and cheap plastic is still everywhere. It’s horribly underwhelming for a $40,000 plus vehicle. I ended up getting leaving GM and getting a BMW X1 instead. Here’s hoping that the XT4 fares better.
