General Motors said it will look into the safety of its panoramic sunroofs following a report published by Consumer Reports last October that detailed how prevalent shattering sunroofs are.
The automaker is one of many CR named in a report that looked at shattering sunroofs across multiple brands. The report shed light on an issue perhaps unfamiliar to most. Research showed 900 incidents spanning 208 models and 35 brands. Most of the shattering panoramic sunroof incidents have occurred in the last six years.
Although GM’s shattering rate is a fraction of others—Kia and Hyundai top the list with 119 reported incidents since 1995—the automaker was the first to respond to CR’s report.
“GM has initiated an internal review of our panoramic sunroofs. We expect to have additional information as we go through that process.”
The 2004-2006 Cadillac SRX became a target for an NHTSA investigation years ago over its sunroof, but the government agency ultimately closed the investigation with no defect found. GM said the incidents were “isolated” and included “damage or “spontaneous” shattering. The automaker backed up its track record over sunroof safety and pointed to the 2015 Buick Regal and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Cruze. GM ordered dealers to replace either model’s sunroof if it did not meet a certain thickness specification.

Panoramic sunroofs are unnecessary. There was nothing wrong with a regular sunroof. I normally keep the shade closed over the rear seat anyway, even when the roof is open. The prices on sunroofs have gone way up with these, because of the larger glass area, that to my knowledge nobody was asking for. It would be nice if GM would offer the option for a regular sunroof on its models instead of forcing the panoramic roof on those that want a sunroof. Like third row seats in suv’s, it’s not something that everyone wants or needs.
I was asking for it. I want it. It is necessary. Regular sunroofs are too small. The bigger the better. I keep the shade on my panoramic roof open as much as possible, my rear seat passengers love it too.
I am glad we have the two separate panels in our GMC.
The worst was the G6 with that short lived multi panel roof.
I don’t see what the problem is! Is it breaks you fix it! It should be covered on your insurance for broken glass
I could care less how many times it breaks make the insurance company pay for it. That’s why you pay for glass option on your insurance policy
Haha this man ^^^^clearly has never had to clean up all the broken glass before. Oh and do you think the glass man just comes out and replaces it in half an hour in your driveway?? Ha
“I could care less how many times it breaks make the insurance company pay for it. ”
That means you still do care.
You’ve been going through your whole life saying it wrong when you really mean to say you ‘couldn’t care less’.
So is this now a term paper that we get graded on?
I can’t believe this is a issue for people if this glass breaks. What is the reason people are so against taking it to a glass shop?
Your windshield gets replaced so how would this be any different? I know it would be a different procedure, but the process is the same for the consumer. Drop the car off wait for the call and go pick it up!
People make problems out of nothing!
Explain to your wife why it broke in the middle of winter and why her new car is filled with snow.
Also some of these tops today are not fitted with replaceable glass or parts.
For a long time the same sun roof that was used in the CTS and HHR. It had a deflector that would break. The only way to fix it or any other part of the roof was to replace the entire sun roof.
This is not always like a window. GM finally had to come up with a bracket to replace vs the entire roof.
Most of these units are designed and sold to the automakers as a pre constructed unit by suppliers. Parts are not generally offered as they are seldom needed or used in many cases.
Also many of these units are used in many different brands with just a different glass being used.
The real issue is if there is an issue in these tops GM does not want a lot of warranty issues. One it is expensive. Two unhappy wives with wet and cold Nox can be a problem when you want to sell them a new one.
I have no problem telling my wife that _HIT happens! The sunroof doesn’t break every week or every year so if you don’t have the backbone to explain this to your wife then that’s a you problem not a me problem!
It doesn’t matter how it’s supposed to be repaired, all I hear is excusses!
Here’s a idea make the sunroof better! Make it with stronger glass material. Fix the problem don’t do away with it!
They are not going to eliminate them they will get the supplier to fix them.
Many roof glass has been reduced in thickness to save weight and odds are they will just increase the thickness.
“So is this now a term paper that we get graded on?”
No. It’s just that you keep saying “I could care less” and keeps making you look like an absolute idiot who doesn’t know what he’s talking about; like you’re not even thinking about what you’re saying and you’re just blurting it out automatically like a programmed lab rat.
LOL I totally get it! Always wondered if people had a clue what they were saying. Irregardless… 😉
Who cares how long it takes to replace? You drop the car off and go pick it up when they are done.
Then stop by a car wash and have the inside cleaned!
Why do people make this so complicated?
Who cares how long it takes to replace? Most people that have busy lives. I don’t want the hassle of getting it to the shop, and finding a ride home while it’s worked on, or have to spend time at the rental counter. I don’t think that you fully understand the situation here. Some of these are shattering while people are driving, not just while the vehicles are parked. Glass is raining down on people and they are getting cut, and some have children in the car. What if you live in a small town that doesn’t have a dealership, or the part needs to be ordered? What if the shop can’t get it in right away? What if it’s going to rain in the meantime? Also, some of these are getting denied for warranty claims, that is if you’re even lucky enough that it’s still new enough to be under warranty. This isn’t like a windshield where the insurance just takes care of it either. At a minimum, you are out your deductible if the insurance does cover it.

Glass on cars is zero deductible! I have worked on cars my whole life and I have never been cut by automotive safety Glass! It shatters for a reason, not like the glass in your house.
Really you are so busy you don’t have the time to drop off a car and take a lift home? Please people spend more time waiting in line at the grocery store then it takes to drop off a car and then walk out to a car for a Lift home!
The Panoramic Sunroofs should stay as a option on vehicles, GM should not run away for these options! Make the glass and installation process as safe as possible and let the consumer decide if they want it!
I do understand here, you are making a mountain out of a moulhill! Creating problems where they don’t exist.
“Really you are so busy you don’t have the time to drop off a car and take a lift home? Please people spend more time waiting in line at the grocery store then it takes to drop off a car and then walk out to a car for a Lift home!”
They don’t have time to wait for a new windshield because those people are working harder than you ever have, you ignorant, lazy, fuk.
Clearly you know nothing about me! And nobody is as busy as you say they Are!
That Brian guy is a rude ass. Just because I posted add cracked dashboards to recall list. He posted it shouldn’t be part of recall. I beg to differ. Theirs a shit load of people who would agree and that are in my situation.
So you think a worm out seat or carpet should be added to the recall? That’s ridiculous! Those things have zero to do with safety! While your at it add in the worn tires too!
You are just a cheap ass! That wants somebody else to pay for your cars damages! Dashes wear out so here’s a idea why dont you open your wallet and get it fixed? Oh that’s right your cheap!
2017 Camaro SS – I was driving down the highway in a 45 mph speed zone Friday and my sunroof exploded. Sounded like a gun went off. Glass went everywhere, from the front to the back of the car. Luckily I was not cut up that bad. I drove to the Chevrolet dealership after I was able to remove the pieces that were hanging around my face. The Chevrolet dealership told me it was not a warranty issue, that there was nothing they could do about and sent me to a glass place and told me to file on my insurance. So I did. I got to the glass place and they told me it is no a glass claim because the entire mechanism and frame to the sunroof blew apart. AND to top it all off, it is on national back order. So called insurance back and now I am having to fine a body claim, because it is a GM part only, and it damaged the paint. So yes this happening is turning into a huge ordeal. So has anyone managed to get Chevrolet to pay for the replacement? Or did insurance take care of it? Insurance says its Chevy place to pay and Chevy says insurance.
i know of at least one death due to that person being thrown out thru the open sun roof in a roll over and crushed by their own car.
Well if they were not belted in with the provided belts then that is not the roof fault.
That is something I thought about when I first saw this rob but life and death is up to the passengers using the belts.
I love my panoramic sunroof . Infact I have even removed the roof rails as they block the view . You can open the glass and shade half way and keep it from shining on the back seat if you have a young one strapped in the back .
Also with GM’s use of black interiors , being able to open the shade gives it a more airy feeling and the glass is tinted in some cars so you don’t have to worry about the suns UV rays and drying out the interior materials .
In winter months I keep even the shade closed , but in spring and summer that roof is open fully with the air conditioning on and radio blasting . A trick I learned is , driving over 35 mph you can get that buffetting noise , but if you crack open one of the rear windows it stops .
I don’t believe ol’ Brian has ever had to clean-up safety glass from the interior of a car before , you can go to a car wash that has their vacuums and you think you got it all until your girlfriend comes in the house to let you know that there is still glass in the seats crevices . That $hit goes everywhere .
You don’t know one God dam thing about me

They need to add cracked dashboards to the recall list!
Dashboards should not be part of any recall!
All sites are working..This is great thing..A huge thanks from my side…:)
Well it happened to me this morning June 13, 2024 in Edmonton AB. Driving to work at 830 am hear this loud pop sounded like a gun shot only to fi d our my panoramic su roof on my 2018 chev equinox emploded while driving.
