The General Motors Janesville plant has seen more than its fair share of vehicle production over decades, but it will all come to a close very soon. According to Hemmings, the plant will be razed ahead of redevelopment.
The Janesville plant was home to numerous vehicle production including Chevrolet lines, J-body compact cars, and at the end of its life, full-size trucks and SUVs. The plant also produced Isuzus. At its peak in the 1970s, the plant employed 7,000 workers.
In a strange move, General Motors never actually took the plant offline until 2015, but the plant shut down indefinitely in 2009 amid GM’s financial instability.
The plant’s buyer, Commerical Development Company, originally intended to preserve parts or all of the plant as it sought out a new industrial tenant. However, cleaning the site up wasn’t enough. Last year, the buyer announced demolishing part or all of the plant wasn’t outside the realm of possibility. Today, we know the entire four-million square foot facility will be reduced to rubble.
