General Motors China Sales Increase 14.5 Percent To 367,712 Vehicles In January 2018

General Motors and its joint ventures reported 367,712 new vehicle deliveries for January 2018 in China, a 14.5 percent increase from January 2017.

The Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and Baojun brands posted sales gains, while Wuling sales decreased.

In 2018, GM will introduce 15 new and refreshed models to support sustained growth in its largest retail market. About half of those 15 new and refreshed models will be SUVs and MPVs to satisfy strong consumer demand.

Shanghai GM Sales – January 2018

January 2018 sales results at Shanghai GM — GM’s primary joint venture in China responsible for Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac vehicle sales — were as follows.

Chevrolet China Sales – January 2018

Chevrolet sales increased 39.5 percent to 54,350 units, the brand’s highest monthly growth since February 2015.

  • Chevrolet Cavalier sales more than doubled to over 19,000 units, remaining the brand’s best-selling nameplate. The vehicle was initially introduced as the second-generation Cruze in China, but then was renamed to Cavalier when the all-new, second-gen global Cruze was introduced in the market.
  • Chevrolet Malibu sales doubled to more than 12,000 units
  • Chevrolet Equinox sales accounted for about 6,600 units, strengthening its foothold in the highly competitive global SUV market segment

Buick China Sales – January 2018

Buick sales increased 5.7 percent to 113,007 units.

  • Buick Excelle GT sedan sales totaled roughly 32,000 units
  • Buick Verano sales topped 18,000 units
  • Buick GL8 sales increased 34 percent to over 14,000 units
  • Buick GL6 sales accounted for over 4,200 units, during the compact MPV’s first January in the market

In March 2017, Buick announced the Buick Velite 5 — its first extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). Essentially a Buick-badged second-generation Chevrolet Volt, the vehicle has fuel consumption as low as 0.9 liter/100 kilometers. In the coming two years, the brand will launch plug-in hybrid and pure battery electric vehicles to expand its green car lineup. In addition, the brand has also announced the all-new 2018 Buick Regal. With 10 variants on offer, the new Regal builds on the success of the popular premium sedan nameplate.

Cadillac China Sales – January 2018

GM’s Cadillac luxury brand continued to build its presence in the Chinese market, increasing sales 12.3 percent to 20,222 units. The results represent the 23rd consecutive month of double-digit Cadillac sales growth in China. The results represent a new January record for the brand.

Cadillac’s sales performance in China outpaced the brand’s U.S. sales volume by 10,389 units during the month.

SAIC-GM-Wuling Sales – January 2018

  1. Great to see GM succeed in China. Hopefully the company can capitalize on these profits to outcompete global juggernauts like Toyota, Hyundai, and VW. Also kind of sad to see US sales at mere 198,548 compared to the China sales. In my opinion, I think it would be great to see GM exceed its 18% market share and dominate the American market like Hyundai does in Korea with its 80% market share.

    1. Keep in mind that U.S. sales are 2-3 times more profitable than Chinese sales (on a per unit basis). That said, yes – it would be great to see GM grow its market share at home…
