The GM Authority Take

Impala sales continued their free fall in January, after a runaway August, a normalized September, a healthy jump in October, an even bigger jump in November and a substantial drop in December. The performance pushed Impala sales to fourth spot in the segment during the month, behind the Dodge Charger in first place (see Dodge Charger sales), Nissan Maxima in second and Toyota Avalon in third. The Impala outsold the Ford Taurus in fifth place (see Ford Taurus sales) and the Chrysler 300 in sixth place, which was the only in-production vehicle to post an even bigger sales decline than the Impala (see Chrysler 300 sales). The Kia Cadenza came in seventh, the Hyundai Azera in eighth, and the Volkswagen CC in ninth (and last) place. To note, both the Hyundai and VW models have been discontinued.

We attribute the Impala’s drop in January sales performance to:

  • The ongoing shift in consumer buying patterns that favor crossovers over sedans
  • Attractive incentives for the Toyota Avalon ahead of the launch of the all-new 2019 model, which appears to be a highly-competitive product that has generated a lot of consumer interest since its debut
  • Aggressive sales tactics by Nissan that we suspect include selling the Maxima to fleets and at steep discounts at retail

Sales Numbers - Full-Size Mainstream Sedans - January 2018 - United States

MODEL JAN 18 / JAN 17 JANUARY 18 JANUARY 17
CHARGER -27.40% 5,193 7,153
MAXIMA +15.92% 4,333 3,738
AVALON +39.07% 3,481 2,503
IMPALA -47.25% 3,150 5,972
TAURUS -9.45% 2,548 2,814
300 -50.72% 2,320 4,708
CADENZA +140.51% 760 316
AZERA -55.04% 125 278
CC -70.66% 49 167
TOTAL -20.58% 21,959 27,649
  • We have included the Nissan Maxima and the discontinued Volkswagen CC in the report, since both models carry similar pricing structures to vehicles in the mainstream full-size sedan segment. However, the Maxima and CC are not full-size sedans. Instead, they are midsize sedans with a greater amount of premium content over the similarly-sized Nissan Altima and Volkswagen Passat, respectively.

The full-size mainstream sedan segment contracted nearly 21 percent in January, which is representative of the ongoing shift in consumer buying dynamics in which buyers favor CUVs and SUVs over other model types, with sedan sales suffering the most.

About Chevrolet Impala

2015 Chevrolet Impala Blackout Concept - SEMA 2014 02

The Chevrolet Impala is a full-size sedan. It is the biggest Chevrolet sedan currently offered, slotting above the subcompact Chevrolet Sonic, compact Chevrolet Cruze and midsize Chevrolet Malibu.

The current model was introduced for the 2014 model year and represents the tenth generation of the storied Impala nameplate. It rides on the GM Super Epsilon platform shared with the second-generation Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac XTS.

Compared to its ninth-generation predecessor, the tenth-gen Impala is an all-new vehicle that is larger, sleeker and more modern. Chevrolet modified its strategy for the new model, as the ninth-gen model was sold to rental fleets in significant quantities, while the tenth-gen is primarily entended for purchase by consumers at the retail level. This condition alone has resulted in a strategic decrease in sales of the current model.

Going forward, it is unclear whether the Impala will live on to see a next, 11th generation, as comments by GM executives have left the vehicle’s future in limbo, mostly as a result of a change in consumer vehicle buying dynamics that is beginning to favor crossover utility vehicles (CUVs) at the expense of sedans.

The Chevrolet Impala is built at the GM Detroit-Hamtramck factory in Michigan operated by GM USA as well as the GM Oshawa factory in Ontario operated by GM Canada.

  1. It’s obvious that Chevrolet’s Impala needs a refreshing with downward spiral in sales.. and nothing could be better than dropping in a 455 hp LT1 6.2L OHV-2v V8.

  2. The car should have had an update for 2018 at the latest. GM can’t just conveniently blame the market shift to crossovers when they haven’t bothered to update the product in five model years. And now with an all-new Toyota Avalon, will GM even bother trying to compete anymore in this segment?

  3. Haven’t the charger and 300 been due to a remake for a while now? Pretty sure FCA keeps pushing that back further and further. Impala could use a refresh but honestly just a new interior, engine & tranny, and taillights. Replace the base 2.5l with a (powerful) turbo 4. Don’t mess up the front end by making it look like a Malibu

    1. yes, the Platform that the Charger/300 is dated back to mid-2000s. embarrassing really. but many consumers do not know that.

  4. These wild fluctuations can only be due to a large percentage of Impala sales going to rental car fleets.

  5. I think the Impala is one of the best looking cars in this segment, it does show that there will be a 9C1 package added to the Impala for 2018 or 2019 from what I’ve seen. Though the styling hasn’t changed, I don’t consider that a negative since it looks so good.

If I ran the program, now that the SS is going away, I would love to add an Impala SS to the line up using the twin-turbo 3.6 from the XTS VSport and add AWD to the SS, both of these seem like upgrades that shouldn’t be terribly difficult to do since other EP cars already offer one or the other, or both in the case of the XTS. The question would be where to price it, a Premier is already in the low 40’s.

In the long run, I could see there still being a case for a next gen Impala, hopefully based on the Omega platform. Leaving the Malibu as the mass market midsizer for Chevrolet and Impala as the RWD top of the range sedan.

    1. Agreed, that’s why I don’t want them to change the front. Don’t ruin a good thing IMO. Back end could use an update to be more modern.

Test drove a 14 Impala LTZ with all options, loved the car but it’s a bit big for my needs and doesn’t come with AWD. If they made an Impala SS RDW/AWD tho….

  7. This Car Hasn’t Seen A Refresh Since 2014 no new wheels the interior is a nightmare mainly the dash(look like it was designed by toyota) they deleted the only attractive interior color they had the rear lights look Horrible at night it looks like something toyota designed how does these things get approved? Who’s (toyota)designing the new generation Chevrolet Vehicles because everything has been very tasteless and ugly equinox cruze Silverado malibu all are hideous the camaro is ok only if you dont get the base model corvette also the rear end is garbage im surprised there aren’t aftermarket led tailamps for the 2014-2018 impala because i don’t know what to call those things on that car GM is just a slow company when it comes to improvements bottom line i don’t know who’s doing the thinking at GM but they need to get a wake up call

  9. OK, the Impala has won Kelly Blue Book best buy award 4 years in a row. When was the last time anyone saw a ad showing the Impala? GM isn’t putting any money on the hood. I have a 2015 LT2 best vehicle I’ve ever owned and I started with a new 1959. My small Dealer in Newberry MI doesn’t even have a new one on his lot. Its not in Dealers Ad’s in large news papers. My opinion GM needs to shake up its own P/R Dept. The stock in GM is hurt by the lack of P/R

  10. How about that thing called advertising. Toot your horn once in a while with various awards the car has garnered over the years like it’s high praise from CR and the best sedan last 4 years running from KBB. Give it a refresh like the Avalon is getting and update the powertrains with 9 speed, cylinder shutdown, revised interior and tech and some exterior revisions. SOme new colors and one more interior color for the volume lT and Premier would be very helpful too.

    1. They added a really nice “wheat” color to the interior thats almost white leather, not super practical, but it looks good with a dark red, blue or the pearl white exterior.
