The GM Authority Take
Sales of the aging old but trusty Chevy Express family significantly outpaced those of the segment. Even so, the performance was good enough for second place in its segment, behind the significantly more modern Ford Transit (see Ford Transit sales) in first. The Express’ 44 percent increase enabled it to reduce the gap between it and the Transit.
Third place went to the Ford E-Series (see Ford E-Series sales), which is available exclusively in the cutaway configuration. In fact, the E-Series posted an even higher percentage increase than the Express. The Ram ProMaster came in fourth (see Ram ProMaster sales), the Nissan NV rounded came in fifth, and the Express’ twin – the GMC Savana took sixth – and last – place (see GMC Savana sales).
It’s worth noting that the Transit and E-Series offerings of GM cross-town rival, Ford Motor Company, saw cumulative deliveries of 12,617 units, eating up roughly 56 percent of the segment during the month. Meanwhile, GM’s offerings – consisting of Chevy Express and GMC Savana sales – accounted for 6,936 units, or roughly a 31 percent share – significantly less than that of Ford. Even so, the fact that the Express (and Savana) can garner as many deliveries as it does is quite impressive, given that it is the oldest vehicle in the segment that has seen very few changes over the past two decades.
We attribute the Express’ sustained sales performance in the face much newer and more competitive offerings to the model being highly cost-effective to buy, operate and maintain. In addition, the Express enjoys a well-established market for up-fitters that prepare the vehicles for various commercial duties. We also believe that the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-Diesel LWN engine and 8-speed automatic transmission (M5U) that were introduced for the 2017 model year have generated increased interest in the model.

About Chevrolet Express

2016 Chevy Express Passenger van
The Chevrolet Express is a line of full-size vans offered in cargo, passenger, and cutaway configurations. It slots above the Chevrolet City Express compact van, which is currently sourced from Nissan.
The first-generation Express ran from the 1996-2002 model years and was based on the GMT 600 platform. In 2003, an updated model was launched on what is known as the GMT 610 platform. This updated model remains on sale today, albeit the range has undergone a few updates to powertrain and minor styling changes. The Express also has a GMC-badged twin – the GMC Savana.
It is currently unclear whether or when General Motors will overhaul the Express, which is showing its age. The 2018 model year will represent its 16th year on the market.
The Chevrolet Express is built primarily at the GM Wentzville factory in Missouri operated by GM USA. In early 2017, Navistar began contract assembly of the Express cutaway in its factory in Ohio, as GM aims to boost the model’s production and supply.

Still i can not find a review or test drive on the internet from a Chevy Express with the 2.8 diesel or the new 4.3 V6, both with eightspeed automatic. Maby someone can do it and post it here on gmauthority?
Any word on when of if these Vans are going to be updated? I know GM has a lot on their plate right now, but they can’t wait forever.
Mum’s the word on this product line for the future… apparently, the strategy is to milk this already-archaic generation for all it’s worth… and perhaps replace it once the EVs are out the door.
Updated or not, still the best van for contractors and commercial users. Still looks good too.
It’s decent. But it could be a lot better. A lot better.
The driving experience leaves a lot to be desired. The interior is not a good place to spend the day… imagine the innovations applied to the new Silverado carried over to a new line of vans. Now THAT would make them indisputably the best. Otherwise, the Transit remains the best.
I’ve been in them, they are quite nice with the big captain’s chair, although the doghouse takes up a bit of the room for your feet. Sit up nice and high, easy to get in and out of. No end to the cargo room, a friend of mine hauls his Ski-Doo inside.
I drove E Series Ford vans for 35 years until the Transit series came out. At that time I purchased a Express van and I am very happy with it, I own a 24 foot car trailer and pull my collector cars with the van. The weight of my trailer with a car in it is almost 9,000 pounds. The Transit and other light duty vans don’t work for my application.
